  1. Not 7 cm. 5 and a bit. Not that it really matters, I guess

Yeah, I was measuring ahead before too, but didn't get the numbers from him. He already had another u/s done a cpl of wks ago, showing baby was 4 lbs 8 oz at 31 wks. So the one in 2 wks is a follow up to that. He's been concerned about baby's size since I first saw him.

I had an ultrasound a few weeks ago at 32 weeks and baby was 4 1/2 lbs. They told me mine was too SMALL.

  2. Here's my FB post from a couple of weeks ago about ds who is a young 2nd grader:

Started on the Crusades today. When asked why Jerusalem was important to the Muslims, ds responded "It was important because there was a magic rock that Muhammad went on and rose up to heaven after he died on the cross."

Prior to that he said that the Battle of Hastings was won by "Guido." History can be interesting here.

  3. Yes! I have the Cadette one. It's 36 pages of handbook. The handbook is full of wasted space and lots and lots of graphics.

Then there is 12 pages on how to get the silver (1-2 pages for the 8 steps)

You should have seen me ranting to dh the other day about the new program. I had out the new Junior binder and the old junior books. I showed him the old Junior handbook (an actual BOOK) and then the new "handbook" section of the binder. There's nothing to it to start with, but once you remove the bronze award (that used to be a separate handout) and things that are related to the journeys / other things you can buy, it really only can be called a booklet. Ick.

  4. I am not impressed at all with the new badge books. They are nothing but fluff - graphics and giant bubbles with very little text. Do they think kids are so dumb today that they can't manage reading a paragraph or two without a bunch of pictures? I do like the new Daisy program with actual specific requirements for earning each petal, but the Junior book is so dumbed down it's crazy.

  5. So if you were doing a lot of travel to learn hands-on about geography, geology, history, botany, zoology, etc., you would still have to have a minimum 600 hours at home? Bummer. I don't know if our state has a rule like that or not. The info I looked at just said you have to commit to doing 900 hours per year, and you can either turn in your curriculum or submit test results.

Not exactly. You have to do 1000 hours total. 600 have to be in the core areas and of those 600 hours, 400 have to be done in the "main homeschool location." There is no requirement for where you do the 400 non-core hours so 600 of your total hours (200 core and 400 non-core) can be done out of the home.

eta: It looks like this was already answered :)

  6. In our state, we have a minimum number of hours with a percentage that need to be in core subjects (math, language arts, science and social studies) while the rest are considered non-core. I would put religious studies under non-core unless it was being done as a part of social studies (history of various religions, etc).

Are you required to track hours though? If your child is still too young for public school you shouldn't have to worry about it.

  7. Is there any way you could phrase it so that it wouldn't make her defensive? I'm not good at coming up with this kind of thing. But, maybe, "You must have been in a hurry yesterday because you grabbed dirty bottles! So, I took them apart and cleaned them before using them." (Maybe have a clean bottle taken apart to show her so she learns that the do come apart!)

I'm sure someone else will have a better suggestion as to how to word it! :group hug: I'm awful in these situations too!

Or maybe have them all in pieces and say " I went ahead and got these all cleaned up for you for the next feeding!"

  8. Is there anything wrong with it? No. Do I grade? Also no. :001_smile:

I mark any mistakes and the kids correct them right away. They know if there were several mistakes or if everything was correct, so I don't feel like they need a value assigned in addition to that. I don't need a grade for my sake since I know how they are performing.

Now, occasionally, if one of the dc is being lazy or sloppy with work, I will make a comment to the effect of "if you would turn this in in public school, it would get a failing grade." Also, if dh corrects their papers and they are all correct, he will mark 100% on the page. Nothing is recorded and neither happens frequently though.

  9. Also, I don't think anyone brought up the point that Girl Scouts discriminate against MEN! Men are not allowed to be GS leaders, but women have been welcomed into all positions of Boy Scout leadership for many years.

I don't think that's true. I've attended leader training with men present. There are more rules for men to follow while camping (toilets for men have to be marked, separate sleeping areas, etc) but from what I know at our council, men can be leaders.
