  1. We have Hakim and American Odyssey.  I am using Hakim for 9th grade US history for one of my girls who needs shorter reading assignments and American Odyssey for my 8th grader who reads more quickly. I believe both books aren't stand alone resources. Our approach to history this year has been laid back, we are only adding in documentaries that tie into each chapter/section.

  2. My dd has begun to narrow her categories but still needs to work out specific goals for each area.

    Fitness:  Softball & Agility

Personal Development:  Education (Science Olympiad) & Piano/Violin

Volunteer: Local Hospital & Red Cross

    Expedition: Trip to Spain

Is it two goals per category?  She has not officially applied so I don't have the paperwork.  We need to speak to our neighbor to see if she would be her advisor.

  3. My dd(8th) is reading through American History (Human Odyssey) and watching documentaries along with taking a British Literature and Composition class this year.  Next year I would like her to take American Literature and Composition but I am not sure what to do for history.  I would like her history studies to match her literature since I couldn't this year.  Would AP US Government, US History or Human Geography be a good substitute for American history? I don't know that I would have her take the AP exam but would want her to use the materials.  Thoughts?

  4. My dd8th is taking high school Honors Biology and her class is using Holt along with labs/lab reports. I am also trying to figure out her next science sequences. I think she'll do physics for 9th, chemistry for 10th and DE for Bio/Chem 11&12th. I go back in forth about AP courses earlier in the high school years. Right now she is interested in neuroscience. She's also competing in Science Olympiad this year. She enjoys science:)

  5. I was talking with a mom yesterday who told me her now 9th grader (in ps) struggled in middle school but is getting A's and B's in high school. She was surprisingly pleased because her daughter hadn't done anything extra to improve her performance such as summer school or tutoring. She never questioned the sudden improved change.

The Running Start program here is really popular amongst homeschoolers however I have some concerns with the quality of education from the community college. A mom told me that her daughter was taking a science class from the cc and that they were studying DNA and did an experiment where they collected DNA from a strawberry. Has community college become the new high school?

To be fair, I need to sit in on some classes at this cc to get a better picture however I think dual enrollment at our local satellite university would be a better fit for a kid who was looking for a challenge. I would rather pay out of pocket.

  6. Quiet time was the best thing we ever did when my kids were young. What made it manageable for everyone was that we had a fixed time, for us it was from 1:00-2:30 everyday. My kids could read, play quietly,and/or listen to story tapes. Kids were in their rooms alone and I got the break I needed. Wishing you well incorporating your family's quiet time.

  7. The teacher is a classically trained violinist from Russian and is currently a member of our large city's opera orchestra however she has performed all over the world. She is an amazing woman with over forty years experience.  She was also the conductor for the community orchestra my dd was apart of.  My dd's favorite instrument is piano, voice than violin. Her teacher can prepare her well, I just don't want to talk to her about it yet because I don't know how serious my dd is at the moment. I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences with me, it helps me see what my dd could be getting herself into. Thank you.
