  1. We each read a section from our own books and then discussed it.  In addition, I've used portions of study guides for more formal discussions on literary terms/devices, major themes and historic references.  My dd also writes chapter summaries, detailed character lists, small writing assignments and essays.  The mix of informal and formal discussions lends itself well to homeschooling. I think the depth of our discussions would have been limited, if I hadn't read the books.

  2. I have been back in forth about Blue Tent Literature & Composition classes. Not to muddy the waters but another provider may offer some insight. Classical Resources Learning Center offers several high school courses in American, British and World Literature & composition. Generally six-seven novels are assigned along with four essays and two exams. The class meets weekly for two hours to discuss novels, assignments and progress. http://www.clrconline.com/lit-comp/

  3. 9th day of my second (almost) Whole 30

Feeling well this morning, however, I am noticing that I am really hungry in the middle of the night despite not restricting my food intake.  With more energy, I am exercising more but it's irritating to be awaken by a growling stomach. I'm proud of myself for making it through my husband's birthday party without eating any of my daughter's delicious homemade chocolate cake.

    B- Eggs & ham

    L-Eggplant & greens

    S-apples & nuts

    D-Turkey sausage & greens

  5. My dd took all of Athena's literature courses when she was younger. In sixth grade, she read assigned books-Tale of Two Cities, Animal Farm, Lord of Flies and favorite, Farhenheit 451. Seventh grade, so far is Emma and Great Expectations. She is an avid reader, loves Goodreads, the local librarian is one of her Goodreads pal. I think if you choose books from classic literature as assigned books, you are doing well. We simply discuss chapters, my dd writes chapter summaries and then creates an essay for each book. Fourth/Fifth grades-The Hobbit, Little Men, Swiss Family Robinson, etc. My dd preferred more "adult literature" in middle school. Sorry if this sound choppy, I'm Writing this on my phone.

  6. Thank you so much ladies!  Yes, I agree, I want my dd to explore many options.  Because she is bound to change her focus, I am preparing her by giving her a solid foundation. There is so much hype, much like a panacea, by public school parents about these types of schools that I feel even more in the minority.

BTW-Yes, she plans on volunteering in a hospital which will hopefully help her decide if it is the right field for her.  Thank you for sharing your stories.

  7. Please tell me that our homeschool with plans for DE in 11th &12th grades would be a better option for a dd who wants to go to medical school. The high school is geared towards bioegineering, nursing, pharmacy and traditional high school classes. Are the situational medical experiences really needed so early? Seems more like trade school training? I'm suddenly feeling inadequate despite having a really solid education trajectory plan:(

  8. Day 14-- I have tons of energy and really no cravings for sweet things or junk foods.  I feel empowered, I can eat so many things that are satisfying. I have also challenged myself to get 70,000 steps a week by walking & attending Jazzercise classes.

Breakfast: scrambled eggs w/onions & bacon

Lunch: cashew/salsa dip with celery & grapes (they were super sweet)

    Snack: banana w/nuts & tea

Dinner: chicken breast, sweet potato w/chimichurri sauce

I have lost weight & inches but waiting until 30 days to actually weigh myself.
