  1. I don't think our "bag full" indicator has ever really worked right. That said, check the manual cuz I don't remember, you're either supposed to read it when it's running or when it's NOT running, but not both, and I can't remember which is right. Usually, I just open it up every once in a while and feel the bag.

My DH loves the Miele. I have a love/hate relationship with it cuz I hate dragging around canister vacs. :/ Someday I'm going to buy or invent a cordless vac that I can strap on like a backpack with a long flexible hose so it will go anywhere easily. No "recalcitrant puppy" canister to drag around, no cord to get tangled up in. That's my dream.

Or floors that vacuum themselves from underneath through tiny holes in the flooring and some sort of suction system underneath.

  2. This is what they sent me:

Thank you for your interest in our Math in a Nutshell Program. Go to www.schoolspecialty.com and click on THINK MATH. On the left side menu click on Specialized Curriculum. Then click on Learning Centers in the second column in the middle of the screen. Then click the Math in a Nutshell. Choose your grade level. Then choose your title. Click on the title. It should bring you to the product description. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance and thank you for contacting Customer Service.

Awesome, thank you both. I haven't heard back from them yet, but now I don't have to wait!

  3. This is what I am wondering? My cousin said she heard that when they searched the shooter's house they found more guns/shot guns. My cousin's brother (obviously my cousin as well, but wasn't sure how to write that, lol!) was one of the officer's first on the scene. The victim was a 17yo boy with Downs Syndrome. Another friend of mine knows him as one of her foster children with special needs is good friends with the boy. His name is Daniel. Please pray for him. :(

So sad. Thank you for putting a name to him. I know why they don't release the names, but it makes it hard to connect in a way.

I don't know about the gun--a large gym bag, like those used for softball/baseball that are big enough to hold a bat?--but I saw something about how he'd posted on his FB account that this was his last day on earth or something to that effect/affect [sorry, I can NEVER get those right!]. That was in the morning before school, if I understood correctly. Shooting was after 11, right?

I just... *sigh* I'm glad the teachers were able to stop him before he got more shots off. And I'm really hoping Daniel pulls through.

  4. I can get a "math in a nutshell" page by googling, but not by looking on Delta's main pages. I suspect that they don't make these kits anymore. I suspect that is an orphaned page, disconnected from the main art of the site, but not deleted.

For example, these is an "analysis and probability" Math in a nutshell kit, but if search "analysis" or "probability" on their main site, those kits do not come up.

Exactly. I sent in a contact form about this. I'll update when/if I hear back from them.

  5. Just to give an alternative opinion:

I don't HATE the bed, but it's not my favorite either. Here's why:

    1) if you're going to use as a bunk this might not be an issue, but the space under is too low to put a lot of things or to play for my tall boy, so he just throws stuff under there in a big pile. I have finally realized that his toy basket cubbies will fit under, so as soon as he cleans it out I will put those under there to free up some floor space

    2) when he got sick and was throwing up in his bed at night, it was a pain to change the sheets. I had to take off the tent, climb up in the [pukey] bed to free the sheets from the far corner, and then again to put the new sheets on. Then I wanted to stay with him cuz he kept puking, so I ended up sorta propped up on the end of the bed in a very uncomfy position.

    3) he and his friends want to play "fort" up there and I worry about their safety. It does feel pretty sturdy, but it still says that only one child at a time should be up there.

    4) I suspect we're going to have to replace it when he reaches his teens cuz he's so tall. Luckily it didn't cost too much.

That's about it. He loves it. He sometimes complains he wants a "softer" mattress, and if I ever find a twin memory foam topper for cheapies, I'll buy it to cush it up a bit.

  6. For crying out loud. It's funny. It's not in the least offensive. Knives are not ACTUALLY on the school shopping list.

Well, what if you're taking a cooking class? I mean, just in case someone cuts their finger, they wouldn't want to risk body fluid contact by sharing knives, right?

I'm so kidding. OP, I think it's funny, but it's people like your SIL that prevent me from posting a lot of things like that, or only posting them so that my other HSing friends can see. It's a shame. :(

  7. You don't have an other. ;-)

My kids are 8 & 3. I do try to remember to put it on them [and me]. I burn fairly easily, and I think my younger son is going to follow my footsteps there. My older son seems to tan really well, but not really burn. Sometimes his cheeks get red.

Anyway, I do try to remember to put it on them, sometimes I forget. I'm also crappy at reapplying if we've been out for a while.

So my intentions are good, but I'm not so good with follow-through.

I gravitate towards the more "natural" sunscreens with a physical barrier rather than the chemical barrier ones, though recently when my older son was in an outdoor camp all day I got him the spray kind so it would be uber-easy for him to apply to himself since the counselors can't help.

Also, I don't apply right away. I believe the need for vitamin D is really important, so I don't apply until we've been in the sun for a bit [30 mins about or 10:30-11:00ish timeframe when the sun is at its most potent]. And if we're out after 4 or so, I don't always bother.

ETA: Oh, and if they're just playing outside in our yard, I don't put it on them. There are lots of trees in our neighborhood.

  8. If I'm understanding correctly, you have agreed to pay $50 a month til the $1300 balance is paid off. This means it will be 26 months before your doctor will be fully paid for the work that she and her staff have provided you.

Would you expect to go to a restaurant or clothing store, rack up a bill, convince them to wait over 2 years to be fully paid, and then be welcomed back to the establishment? Why do you all expect this of your doctors? Obgyns have some of the highest malpractice premiums to pay in the industry. They have nurses, staff, and overhead to pay. Just because they're doctors doesn't mean their work should go without rightful compensation.

I seriously don't understand some of these responses.

High horse? That's really funny. Nope, I'm just an average person who can understand that a PROVIDER OF SERVICE may choose to have a policy to not PROVIDE SERVICE to someone who will owe them money for 2+ years, even if that person expects the provider to be happy to continue working for them essentially for free.

And no, this is not an emergency. OP is free to seek out another provider who will take Medicaid and to whom she is not already in debt.

What I don't understand is all these posts that are vilifying the doctor who has these policies in place. It's a free country. OP is free to take 2 years to pay off her bill. The doctor is free to say, "Nope, I'm not going to spend my time treating people who owe me money."

How is it that the doctor is in the wrong?????

The short answer is that health care is [should be] a right not a "want".

I don't know what Kristin's surgery was in March, but I imagine that if she could have avoided running up a $1200+ bill, she would have. She now has medical coverage [Medicaid] and is making a good-faith effort to pay off her bill. She is not attempting to freeload or "stiff" the doctor.

Yes, the doctor is a "provider of service", but he's not in the same class as a hair stylist or a tailor. This is not an "emergency", but as the OP stated, there are no other doctors in her area accepting her health insurance. Unless you are suggesting she run up a bill with the other doctor?

But honestly? This isn't about vilifying the doctor or the practice. It's about the billing agent using common decency and politeness in dealing with an established patient [who has never carried a balance before in all her years as a patient and who IS paying her bill as we speak], and about showing respect to another human being. Being polite and showing empathy cost her nothing.

Kristin, Congratulations. I hope that all the advice and support you've received here help you to solve this problem.

  9. I have an unusual suggestion for you. 2 years ago we went to DC and stayed at the Channel Inn. Now. I have the feeling that it was once quite the luxury place that has since gotten run-down, and I assume that's why the price didn't seem so high for the location. But we really enjoyed our stay there. The first room they put us in was filled with bugs. As the name implies, it's right on the Channel, and someone must have left the balcony door open, and there were just bugs--mosquitoes--everywhere. I marched back down to the front desk and they moved us.

    What we liked:

    1) they have a diner on-site for breakfast. A little pricey, but good.

    2) they have a nice restaurant on-site in case you want to celebrate anything; great view

    3) on-site parking!!!

    4) Could walk or quick cab ride to the Mall or a Metro stop [my mom can't walk long distances, so we cabbed it].

    5) other restaurants within walking distance

    6) location is beautiful, right on the water

So that's my rec of hotel.

  10. Warning - might be rude words, I wasn't able to preview.

I saw Alan Rickman on stage in Dangerous Liaisons in, I believe, 1986, playing Valmont. Extraordinary.

    Laura

Finally had a moment when the kids weren't hanging over my shoulder. So funny. I love all those actors, though I couldn't name them all. But then again, I struggle to remember my kids' names. :tongue_smilie:

  11. Me too! He was so great in Robin Hood. The only great one in that movie really! :p
Totally. That movie was CR@P except for him. <3

Based on the title of this post, I wasn't sure if it was okay for my 7yo to watch!

Sorry! I was posting on the fly, and forgot to say. I was totally intrigued by the double entendre [at least for WTMers! ] but should have said it was totally G/PG.

That was fabulous. Can I say, though, that I loved Alan Rickman long before the Harry Potter books were even written.

    True, true!

Oh, and "Galaxy Quest"! How could I forget that one? Only he could play a bad actor that well. :)

Love this movie. So bummed it's not on Netflix Streaming.

Actually, I think the only movie mentioned that I haven't seen it "Truly, Madly, Deeply". Gotta look into that one. [well, and Inception, but he wasn't in that one was he?]

How about Rickman reading the periodic table? How cool would that be?!

  12. I think I know what you mean.

We used Phonics Pathways. It has a page for the sound you're talking about, but it's much later in the book. It makes the distinction between the short o sound [which they mark as an o with the little curved line above it] and the aw sound like in caught, yawn, etc which they mark as an o with a little carrot [inverted v] over it. It's page 188 in the 9th edition. The example words are

    dog hog fog log

    clog smog frog lost

    boss cost off offer

    soft loft floss cross

    moss loss toss frost

[ETA: I skipped this page because we don't really make that distinction in pronunciation.]

When I was in grad school for ESOL/bilingual ed. I learned in my class on pronunciation that it's very "yankee" to make a difference between caught and cot. Many of us pronounce those two words the same. ;)

I don't know what to tell you about how to TEACH it. I started using OPGTR before switching, and thought it was very thorough, so I'm surprised it doesn't cover this slightly different sound. Good luck!
