My ds who is eight after paging through the book and reading the first chapter of Great Expectations announced to us that he thinks he would enjoy reading Dickens. Do you think it is too early for him to understand the book, should I just let him read and see how far he gets? I am sure that the book could be read and understood at different levels, but still not sure if I should let him read this independently or for us to work on this together.

I always go back to two authors when I want to laugh - Gerald Durrell (the naturalist), particularly his books about his family while they were living in Greece during WWII. Those are Birds, Beasts and Relatives and My Family and Other Animals. Any of his are funny, really. They are all focused on animals.
I love Durrell's books, My Family and Other Animals is very funny.

Beginning Russian http://www.slavica.com/textbooks/text_leed.html is considered good. But you can look around on the slavica website and see other options they have there.

Such a great achievement! Congratulations to you both.

Thank you! Now that I am ready to relax a little, I will look into SWR and other programs.

This is very helpful, thank you!
At that age, I like short, fun lessons from the white board and a lot of games.Blend phonics is free online and easy to do from the white board.
Here is a good games thread, but I would not do the sight word games. I have tutored too many remedial students who had problems from doing sight words as wholes. A good phonics program will teach most of them phonetically. You can teach all but 5 of the 220 sight words phonetically if you add in a few rules and patterns, my sight word page shows how.

I am really relieved that there is consensus that I need to back off for a while. He does like writing and is asking to write words and sentences. Hopefully this will lead to the next step.

Thank you all for your advice. I think I will just back off for few weeks and will focus on the things he likes to do. Meanwhile I will explore the options that AprilMay suggested.

My 5 year old loves math, enjoys learning to write, but the moment we start to work on reading he acts like I am torturing him. We are using Hooked on Phonics. He knows the sounds associated with each letter, so I know that he has the foundation to keep moving on. But how do we get over this constant struggle?

It sounds like your son is mature and responsible child, maybe you can discuss with him your concerns?

My son loves the fact that DSi has camera and WiFi. Nintendo will be reducing the price by $20 for DSi on September 12th.

I missed seeing a name for the photo. Is it on another link on the site ?
No you did not miss it, that is the file name of the picture file. If you right click the picture to save it on your computer, you will see the original file name.

We used original as well.

You could loose about 21 lb healthy way, whatever method you choose to follow. So, I suggest that you go for the change in your life style and eating habits, weight should not be your main focus.

Freezing them may help, at least when I freeze my meatballs, they seem softer afterwards.

I love Zone diet. The first thing I noticed was how big the servings felt, but they were relatively low in calories. The diet does require calculations as you have to balance carbs, fat and protein. It took a while for it to become a habit.

This is why I switched to cookies. Smaller surface area, but you can do so much. And it is much easier to give away cookies then cakes, people see it less formal. In addition it is cheaper as well.

My ds loves oatmeal, but lucky for me he eats other things as well. I do a lot of different variations for him. He only loves the old fashioned oatmeal. I make it with milk (protein) and fruit. Sometimes I add yogurt after it is cooked. I always use honey, sometimes I add nuts or ground flaxseed. I have come up with at least 10 different variations for him. I have added even peanut butter and jelly to oatmeal (per his request).
Definitely no reason to worry, you can make oatmeal very nutritious.
If you liked The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...

I think you would enjoy Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallendar Mysteries, there are at least nine books. BBC has TV series as well that I have enjoyed watching.
