  1. This is what we have been doing for a while now and it still works great for us. Now we trade chapters.
  2. I agree with this. My ds has been learning Mandarin for the las three years, last two via Skype. We found his tutor at a large state university. We are very happy with his Skype lessons. But we do have a major problem with writting - how do you teach/learn writting online?
  3. There are 3-ring binder storage sheets for coins, they are see through, and you can do a binder with coins, add maps and other facts, and there will be plenty of room to expand.
  4. Do they eat meat? I have several Chinese friends who do not. If they eat meet, beef stroganoff or pork loin would work. Although many like pizzas, the same cannot be said about pasta dishes. Green beans work well, but most veggies would work. American style salads (chicken, tuna, pasta) may not work.
  5. :grouphug::grouphug: I do understand this, I still remember the day when I was in the hospital and was asked to give two emergency contacts and I had only one - my dh. I called my boss at work to ask if I could use her as my emergency contact. I am glad that at least now I do have a close group of friends, but still I hate fundraisings and situations when we are expected to involve extended family.
  6. This is very useful, because now I know to look around and see how different clubs are organized. I did not know that there could be such huge difference between clubs.
  7. I am starting to get a better picture of the 4H andI am really happy to hear your positive experiences. My ds talked to couple kids who are involved in 4H clubs and they said that our area 4H does have a dog club. Now I will just have to find out more details. I am still worried about the time commitment. Shannon, how many hours a week does your ds spend in his club activities or did during his first year?
  8. Denise, thank you for your detailed description. Seems this has been a great experience for your children. I like the idea that there are a lot of different opportunities so that children can be involved variety of activities. How many hours a week commitment would participation in one club require from my ds? Can anyone share specific experiences about participating with dogs?
  9. Steep and drink like a tea. My friend used to add milk to her fennel seed tea, but I was fine with the taste so did not add anything.
  10. My ds 9 wants to be involved because the dog rescuer we got our puppy from suggested that this would be a good educational option for our ds and something he could do with the puppy. Before I try to find a local group, I would like to hear about your and your children’s experiences.
  11. I used fennel seeds. 1 tsp of dried seeds for one cup of water.
  12. Thank you for explaining this. It is good to know that we have to wait only until October.
  13. We will be soon done with the first five weeks and I emailed Patty this morning, but was told that additional ALL weeks are not available. This happened this morning before I saw this thread. Should I email her again and refer to this thread? Wanted to let you know that my son loves this book, the first language book he does without complaining and whining. And because English is not my first language I love the scripted lessons.
  14. I would love to join in as well, need to lose 30 pounds. I was on Zone Diet years ago and it worked well, but right now motivation is the biggest issue for me. I could really use some support.
  15. Getting a dog from a shelter is not free, at least not in our area. They still charge a fee. I have been looking at shelters and rescues for couple days now and average fee in our area is $200.
  16. I expect that everyone will give their best effort, so yes, I have high expectations for myself and others, including my children. I do not think that is a bad think. If the best effort for my ds means reading at the 8th grade level not the 4th, then I expect him to read at this level. If he can do math at 6th grade level that is what he should be doing. I agree with those that I see my job as a parent to encourage and provide opportunities, but that is not pushing.
  17. We used Tattle Tale Alarm, it senses motion and alarm sounds for a minute or so, and scares the dog away. It was great training tool for counters and cabinets. Our dog loved to get into kitchen cabinets, even child locks did not stop him. But the alarm did the trick.
  18. 18 pages is what I have. I love it, when I try to add something new that I just discovered, and get a message that the item is already on my list and now has been moved up.
  19. One of the bigest problems with the American curriculum is the "mile wide and an inch deep" nature of it. You are covering topics, but realy not mastering the concepts. Any curriculum that will give you more than an inch depth is what you want to look at. You have here some very good links suggested.
