  1. I would try "trade reading" with her. You read some, she reads a little, you read some more. You start with you reading a page to her sentence and then gradually shorten what you are reading and lengthen what she is reading. It is a very cozy way to get your dc to read to you and allows them to have some breaks to enjoy the story.

This is what we have been doing for a while now and it still works great for us. Now we trade chapters.

  2. I think learning Mandarin is great, and can open up opportunities in the future, but not really as an interpreter/translator. There are way too many native mandarin speakers who are fluent in English that can fill those roles.

    I agree with this.

My ds has been learning Mandarin for the las three years, last two via Skype. We found his tutor at a large state university. We are very happy with his Skype lessons. But we do have a major problem with writting - how do you teach/learn writting online?

  3. Do they eat meat? I have several Chinese friends who do not. If they eat meet, beef stroganoff or pork loin would work. Although many like pizzas, the same cannot be said about pasta dishes. Green beans work well, but most veggies would work. American style salads (chicken, tuna, pasta) may not work.

  4. Again, though, it's not so much that I'm worried about the money. We "can" write the check if we have to do so, although it wouldn't be comfortable. I just hate being reminded over and over and over again how alone I am.

:grouphug::grouphug: I do understand this, I still remember the day when I was in the hospital and was asked to give two emergency contacts and I had only one - my dh. I called my boss at work to ask if I could use her as my emergency contact. I am glad that at least now I do have a close group of friends, but still I hate fundraisings and situations when we are expected to involve extended family.

  5. I can, but it wouldn't be that useful to you since each club can vary widely from the next. As an example, one local club here provides project opportunities ranging from small to large animals, from rocketry to photography ~ and much more. They have meetings and activities several times a month. Another club is focused entirely on showing dairy animals at the annual fair in August. They have no other activities and only get together in the couple of months leading up to the fair, as they prep to show cows. They're both 4-H clubs in name, but they couldn't be any more different from one another.

The best thing for you to do is to connect with local clubs and find out how they're set up, get an idea what your commitment would be, etc. Only then can you get a better feel for it and make a decision as to whether you want to take the next step ~ and if so, which club will be a good fit.

This is very useful, because now I know to look around and see how different clubs are organized. I did not know that there could be such huge difference between clubs.

  6. I am starting to get a better picture of the 4H andI am really happy to hear your positive experiences. My ds talked to couple kids who are involved in 4H clubs and they said that our area 4H does have a dog club. Now I will just have to find out more details. I am still worried about the time commitment. Shannon, how many hours a week does your ds spend in his club activities or did during his first year?

  7. Denise, thank you for your detailed description. Seems this has been a great experience for your children. I like the idea that there are a lot of different opportunities so that children can be involved variety of activities.

How many hours a week commitment would participation in one club require from my ds?

Can anyone share specific experiences about participating with dogs?

  8. Yes, sorry, I should have been clearer! The first five weeks are typeset. The following lessons are still in manuscript. We assumed that people would be starting it in the fall, so that the typeset lessons would take you through the end of September. So the additional ALL lessons won't be available until the first week of October.

Thank you for explaining this. It is good to know that we have to wait only until October.

  9. We will be soon done with the first five weeks and I emailed Patty this morning, but was told that additional ALL weeks are not available. This happened this morning before I saw this thread. Should I email her again and refer to this thread? Wanted to let you know that my son loves this book, the first language book he does without complaining and whining. And because English is not my first language I love the scripted lessons.

  10. I expect that everyone will give their best effort, so yes, I have high expectations for myself and others, including my children. I do not think that is a bad think. If the best effort for my ds means reading at the 8th grade level not the 4th, then I expect him to read at this level. If he can do math at 6th grade level that is what he should be doing. I agree with those that I see my job as a parent to encourage and provide

opportunities, but that is not pushing.
