  1. Out of my 3, 2 have played with baby dolls consistently since they were little. Many people guess that would obviously be my 2 girls but it's dd7 and ds6. They both nursed the babies when they were toddlers, they constantly take care of the dolls and include them in our school time, etc. My oldest has an American Girl Doll that she saved up for but I think she was more motivated to do that because her siblings both love dolls and she wanted to be included. She has never really been into dolls.

  2. Oh my gosh, lol. Did you ever go meet the homeschool family at the end of the street? if not, GO! Solidarity in numbers right?

    :grouphug:

I've been trying but they seem to be gone this month! It will happen, I do feel a little like a stalker by riding by on my bike all of the time :001_smile:. This comment was from right across the street, as in the house we see everyday and where there will be a new bus stop starting in September. For the same school we are zoned for, etc.,etc.,etc. The fun never stops!

  3. I am using I Can Do All Things by Barry Stebbing with my 7, 9, and 11 year olds. We've dropped Friday science and inserted art instead. It's great to have that time each week. My older kids do their art at the same time.

We use this, too. Mine are 10, 7 and 6 and we generally do art on Mondays. They love that we do art every week and it's easy to switch mediums with this program. One week we will practice drawing, the next we might do a marker card and then painting the next week. My younger really just started in this year so he'll get to catch up to what his sisters have already done and I'll pick another book from the program for them. HTH

  4. I have an Inbox for work to be turned into me. Behind my spot at the table I have a shelf with my planners and all Teacher's guides. Theoretically I check all work the same day it comes in for immediate feedback. In practice we just started so I don't know how long I'll keep that up. If I don't get to it during the day at least I have a special spot to sit down and check everything and either return the work or file in our work binders. I do not file daily, or weekly, or even monthly; I file when my box of completed work is too full for more papers :). I've considered that this year, when our after school activities start in September, I may need to have a totebag at the ready to take my work with me while I wait at gym and soccer and choir and..... HTH!

  5. Over your lifetime, you can do both:

Educate your kids at home and 12 years from now go back to teaching, if you want to help the future of other children. :001_smile:

Thanks for this, I was stuck in a loop that didn't give room for the broader perspective. I also did some more research on the origins of the film, etc., and I feel that I can see the agenda for what it is and put the film into the proper place. I've never seen a lottery like that before for charter school places and that was interesting but obviously played for sympathy and the "ultimate tears moment". Still, my bil and sil live in a big city where charter schools play a huge role in the education choices available to their family. They cannot afford private school and do not want to send their oldest (entering K) to the public school that they are zoned for in their neighborhood. They entered 2 lotteries for charter schools and she was accepted into their second choice. They are not altogether confident in this option but are not the type of family to homeschool either, so it has given me some new perspective on school choices. I appreciate the feedback and do continue to look for ideas on how to improve the education provided to our nation's children. I, of course, have very strong opinions on how children should be brought up but also understand that not everyone is me!

  6. Just watched this yesterday from Netflix and have found myself reverting back to my teacher training days and wondering how true this movie really is today. I trained back in the early 90's and was super gung ho about the whole "I'm going to change the world of education" spirit. I joined the NEA right away only to discover that I had just joined a huge political entity that I disagreed with on many points. Am I ruining the future education of other children by staying home and teaching my own??

  7. Today - we will start everything except Latin and Logic. We will school for 2 weeks, have a week off for a family reunion trip and then return to all subjects mid-August. We are very ready for our regular schedule to return and to have a reason to not have all of the neighbor kids over all day looking to be entertained.... PS don't start here until after Labor Day and I simply cannot wait that long because I do not like to be still working hard in June when the weather is beautiful.

  8. All three of mine are limited to 30 minutes of computer time (via passwords and controlled access to certain games and websites only). This year my oldest will have schoolwork assignments using the computer so she will get some school time as well. TV doesn't come on until everyone is done with all school for the day. We frequently have days where the TV never even comes on. If we have a DVD for school or a Netflix, it's easy to limit that because once the DVD is done everything goes off. Only my ds is interested in the Wii so he usually picks that instead of a TV show after all school is done. Our summer break ends this weekend so we will start these rules now so as to better start school on Monday.

  9. Here is what I have planned for my 2nd grade dd, starting on Monday. FLL2 (3x per week), Writing Tales (daily), Horizons Math (daily), Sonlight Core C (4 days/week), Spelling Workout (daily), Explode the Code book 6 (daily), PictureSmart Bible (daily). Starting in September we will add Real Science 4 Kids Biology (2 x week) and Logic (2 x week). I'm planning the morning for her and ds6 and his first grade work. I know my fifth grade dd10 will continue her work into the afternoon but I'm hoping for her to still be done with work by 3ish so that she has free time before after school activities. We do not have anything planned for out of the house during the day at this point.

  10. Waterside Marketplace has gone down hill big time so I'm not even sure there is a decent place to eat there. I'd head for MacArthur Center for lunch and shopping and spend a couple hours at the Chrysler Museum. I love this museum, they have a varied collection for many different interests. Also they have a place to eat lunch at the museum that is very good. HTH

  11. Technically this is already offered if you consider things like K12 (which is completely paid for in some states). Yes the parent has to facilitate and be there, but it seems as if most of the organizing and planning is all done.

    :iagree:

I've met many families in this last move to our new neighborhood who homeschool with K12 because of problems at school. If you ask me, there are plenty of choices out there with a SAHM homeschooling her own children being just one of many that works for families. I have come to see homeschooling as a lifestyle choice for our family but it is not for everyone.
