  1. Which schedule do you use? Three wk, two wk or 1 wk plan? I just got it in the mail after ditching Writing Strands, so I wanted to see what others are doing/have done. It's book B if that matters, 2nd grader. He is extremely creative but hates the physical act of writing. We also do WWE 1, so I was thinking WWE on T/TH and WS Primary B on M/W/F but I don't want it to drag taking 3 weeks on one lesson.

  2. boom1128: I figured out I need the workbooks. I got the HIG's and Textbooks used in a bundle for $10 so I picked it up thinking it was complete... Anyway, as far as teaching goes...do you just explain the problems in the HIG and then work though the textbook problems together and then give them workbook pages to do? I can get the workbooks for about $9 ea from Sonlight it looks like, so it might be worth giving it a whirl.

lauren: It just seems like it drags, and drags and drags...not that some repetition isn't great, but it's not working out I don't think. It is good to know that 3 moves a little better. We are about to do lesson 65 I think tomorrow and 70 is 1/2 way so if we stick with it we will be in 3 before the school year is out.

  3. when do we throw in the towel and move on to something else. We've only been using it for 3 1/2 weeks, but it's not doin' it for me or him!

BG: He is strong in math, tested at mid-level 3rd grade coming out of 1st ps. He knows most of his addition facts, does we'll with double digit addition and does well with double digit subtraction--no regouping yet, that lesson starts on Monday for Saxon. We are about 1/2 way through level 2. He *USED* to love doing math, but now moans and groans and complains every.single.day about it.

I have Singapore 2A & 2B, but honestly, I don't get how to teach it? Am I missing something in the IG? I have HIG and Student books, is there another piece? Or, should I try something like MUS? I'm at a loss.

  4. I have with my son! He is almost 8. We started near lesson 80 for review and do two lessons per day. He knows nearly all of the words already, but I see his fluency improving and it's filling in some gaps in phonics instruction for him b/c they didn't teach hardly any phonics in ps.

  5. Just a quick question (sorry if it's been asked, when I searched I couldn't find it)...do you have your child write the dictated words and then phrases as well? We are plowing through book one and I know we will slow down on book 2, but for now we do more than one lesson (section) per day and he hasn't made mistakes yet, but it seems like an awful lot of writing. Today we had 15 phrases and 10 words just in one lesson and we did two, plus he had grammar, science narration and history to write for.

Do you think it would be ok, while we're in one to have him maybe write 1/2 and spell out loud the others to cut down the writing? Or am I missing something with the writing?

  6. FWIW, my dd (4.5) is listening and coloring for SOTW 3 this year with ds (7.5). I'm doing 3 this year b/c he wanted to do American History and we wanted him to do world, so we're doing SOTW 3 and adding a TON of US History in. Dd listens and colors, sometimes even asks questions. We listened to SOTW 1 and 2 on audio this summer to give them a little background. We'll be 'off-cycle' some, but that's OK with us b/c it will take us longer than a year for SOTW 4 b/c my dh is a Historian.

  7. We're using SOTW 3 and supplmenting with Guest Hollow for the US portion. I plan on spending a week for many/most chapters (doubling up when there aren't many resources) and we will spend a lot of time on the Plymouth, American Revolution, Dec of Ind, Constitution, War of 1812, Lewis & Clark, etc. I plan on at least 1 month on just the Revolution. We're also going to learn all of the US Presidents to 1850. I won't finish the book this school year, so we'll do History even when we don't 'do' school (like over Christmas Break).

  8. We just started RS4K Pre-Level I Chem this week. I like the text, I don't love that I have to download the lesson plans from the website (not in the TM and not loving the dragging out for 2 wks) and I do like the simplicity of the experiments, but I wish there was more. We received an experiment kit as a gift (one of the big Smithsonian ones) so we're going to do the RS4K every other week and a fun experiment in between. When I finish Chem, we're going to do Health from Abeka and then move onto the Biology Pre-Level I.

They did say at the SEHS Expo last week to expect the Astromony one out before the end of the year, if they really mean it. Also, buy it used!
