  1. A friend of mine on FB also posted this article.

The thing is, the guy had paid the fee in years past. People don't just wake up one day and say, "Screw it, I'm going to Outback instead, we haven't had a fire yet!" This screams CHOICE, not GAMBLE. As in, pay this $75 fee or feed my kids this week. I don't care what some people say, $75 is a big deal to some families.

I think what happened is a horrible, horrible thing and skirts on extortion. I cannot imagine just standing there and listening to a family lose everything and doing NOTHING. I don't care if those firefighters were acting on orders. That is awful.

Also, if I call an ambulance, it comes no matter who or what I pay. If I don't have insurance to cover it, they send me a bill. Send the family a bill.

  2. Primarily I watch Hulu on my computer, but I'm on my first month of trying Hulu Plus ($10 a month), so I can watch on my phone/iPad. (Don't have a TV.) With Hulu Plus, there seem to be a few ways to watch on a TV, but I obviously haven't tried them. I will say I've been very impressed with the app on my phone, and I think it will end up being worth the $10 a month for me.

It's worth $10/month for me to be able to watch Law & Order SVU, lol

  3. In addition to Sony, Olympus and Pentax make some really great dSLRs. Oly started from the ground up with a 4/3 format designed specifically for digital. Unfortunately, this limits the ability to use "legacy" lenses from the days of film. Pentax went the other way and kep the same mount they've used for almost eons. Almost every Pentax lens will fit your Pentax dSLR.

I chose a Pentax K-x. This was after much debate on which brand to purchase. Canikon use lens-based optical stabilization whereas Oly, Sony and Pentax all utilize a sensor-based optical stabilization. This makes their lenses lighter and less expensive than equivalent Canikon stabilized lenses. For myself, as a general consumer, kit weight was a significant factor. I needed moderate levels of stabilization because I wouldn't be lugging a tripod around on the family vacation. I also needed to reduce the weight because again, I'm lugging this around the World. (Disney World, that is!) That's what steered me towards sensor-based stabilization methods.

YMMV, but the folks at Steve's Digicams forums were very friendly and helpful in my selection process. I actually started off quite certain that I wanted an Olympus. After discussing my goals and desires with the fine folks at Steve's, I came to the conclusion that Pentax was right for me.

That's right! And Minolta lenses work on Sonys
