  1. :iagree:You can get R&S books really cheap used!

Also, have you looked in the teacher's manual? They may have some suggestions. My DS is in 2nd and I saw that they suggest making a book for contraction word groups. I wonder if that's in your book someplace.

The other thing to consider for your 4th grader is to shelve it and try 3rd grade.

For your 1st grader, do some searches online for contraction games and file folder games. She may need something more hands on for learning it. That's when I slow things down and find a different approach.

    Maybe this: http://www.sadlier-oxford.com/phonics/flyby/flyby1.htm

I found this search consonant digraphs: http://bogglesworldesl.com/phonicsmonstersconsonantdigraphs.htm very cute!

My son played this game a lot! http://www.softschools.com/language_arts/phonics/games/ch_sh_wh_th_sounds.jsp

I thought these links were worth a re-post. Thank you so much!

Some questions. Is your 1st grader doing LTR ?First grade LA is designed to start later in the first grade year. Did your 4th grader do CLE300 last year? If not did he take the diagnostic/placement test? I would probably review the problem areas and give the alternate LU test.

OK. I didn't know 100 was designed for later in the year, so that is good to know. She's in reading 100, is that what you mean by 'Learning to Read'? She's a satisfactory reader. She's been reading Amelia Bedelia and Flat Stanley, and attempting some other stuff, so I'm comfortable with her reading.

My 4th grader did Easy Grammar, Writing Tales and Spelling Workout last year, and she tested in on the diagnostic, but just barely. She struggles. Maybe I do need to supplement. :(

isn't supposed to be started until at least week 9 and as late as week 19 of the school year-- it is designed to be started after you are half way through their phonics program, so if you are starting at the beginning of the year, it is going to be really hard. Also, unless your 4th grader had had some heavy duty grammar, starting in 400 might be too much. There is alot of diagramming in there.

I have a 4th grader doing 400 but she was already into FLL 4 lasy year. I have 100 on the shelf waiting till my dd is in LU 105 of Learning to Read. I would be careful moving to the next LU with those scores because each LU really packs on the skills and increase in difficulty. YOu might want to shelve 100 and just concentrate on a review of phonics.

I appreciate all the feedback. I will definitely be changing a few things. I know my 1st grader will enjoy those games!

  2. So if they fail a LU quiz or test, instead of trying to supplement some of what they've learned, just bump them into the next LU?

IThe scores are just barely 'not passing'. DD1 got a 75 on her quiz2 and dd2 got a 67 on her LU. So...should we just keep going?

Oh, and just to clarify, I have a 1st grader and a 4th grader using the LUs.

  3. Why birth control for 6 months  I wasn't able to take birth control either and this *never* came up in my appointments. I actually didn't have a cycle for almost 6 months and the med used to induce a cycle caused *way* too many side effects for us to pursue artificial induction of a cycle. My cycles were either long lasting, many in a short time, or LONG (think weeks at a time) but months apart. The endometriosis and my hormones just did not play nicely.

Interesting! That's just what my gyn told me! I have polyps and constant spotting/ bleeding. I don't know:001_huh:

  4. I was able to purchase practice sheets for my 4th grader, but for the life of me, I can't find anything for my 1st grader. She's having trouble with consonant digraphs and contractions. Any recommendations?

Also, I don't think the practice sheets I purchased for my 4th grader are going to be enough. She's having trouble still with just identifying adjectives and their nouns, and possessive pronouns.

Where can I go to supplement them?

  5. Hey Mandi!

I agree. Your kids are a little young. They are both great curriculum but when they are ready.

We're doing Apol. Anatomy this year, and Breena is just barely able to stay afloat. I would either break up the lessons even more, or go with something geared toward younger kids. ;)

Oh, and MOH was too much for us too. Maybe if I had tried it when A was older, but it's a lot.

  6. That's great! I actually used cloth diapers, and because of this (you have to buy them, etc) I was exposed to a lot of the liberal 'we directly cause global warming and your SUV is responsible for the extinction of polar bears, etc...'

I love the rear-facing carseat lectures I would get from the twenty-somethings. I actually told one that back in my day, we strapped the children in with bungee cords. She seriously just didn't know what to say.

    I love stumping them.
