  1. She loves to read, and loves to write. BJU isn't working out for her....too dry, fact laden, and redundant in the christian thing. (We are christian, but anti-establishment, so I try not to add too much into the curriculum...)

She likes the SOTW books, but she's in 7th grade. Shouldn't she be beyond that by now?

Science- I'm lost. She's doing Bob Jones, but not doing well. Failing every test. :( Hates Apologia, I think because she just likes to read, not stop for an activity every paragraph.

    What do we think?

  2. I have a 4th grader (10 year old) and a 2nd grader (7 year old) and a 4 year old who I haven't felt is ready for any formal school yet...and we are trying to follow a classical model but I am also trying to work in a class/ time at the gym in the morning. I would be going at 8:30 and getting back home at around 10:30. What I'm finding is that they are so distracted by the time we get back, that they don't do what is asked. (It's hard to get them to do it when we DONT go anywhere)

I have a major trust issue with my oldest, as she seems to have a terrible habit of doing the very minimal amount of work to say she's done...sloppy and often incomplete, unless I basically micromanage her and stand over her while she's working. Totally different thread about that...

    Our current schedule is:

7:00 get up, dressed, morning chores, brush teeth/ hair

    8:00 breakfast

8:30-10:30/11:00 start math and grammar (we alternate, since they both need help with flashcards, etc.)

    11:00-11:30 outside/ play until lunch

    12:00 lunch

12:30 read to 4 year old, and lay him down for his nap

12:45/1:00 read aloud alternating history and science, memory work, go over latin

Usually we are done by 2:30 to 3:00pm

Should we consider getting up earlier? We really couldn't work much later...

  3. Thanks for posting books to reference. My spiritual journey has had its ups and downs. I was raised ELCA Lutheran and was extremely committed to my faith, especially as a teenager. I even considered becoming a pastor.

In college, one of my boyfriends was atheist. He was very intellectual and pragmatic and gave me lots of books to read to support his point of view. By the summer after my sophomore year, I was having my doubts. These doubts were exacerbated when I asked my mother why she believed what she believed and she said something along the lines of "this is what our family does". That was not a good enough reason for me.

That fall I was a passenger in a car accident that left me with a head injury and one of my closest friends dead. It was at that time I came back to Christianity. I was literally surrounded by people caring for me and praying for me. I also had what seemed like a supernatural experience shortly thereafter. I'm not sure about it now, but I suppose that's how a lot of people feel about things that are borderline miraculous.

I still consider myself Christian, but a doubting Thomas of sorts. I agree with most of Jesus' teachings, but I have a hard time with all the rejection of my fellow humans (e.g. gay/lesbian/transgender folks) and the doctrine of the Trinity.

I feel that if you're not questioning your faith, it is useless. It is static. There is no growth. Might as well stay home.

    :iagree:

  4. I still believe in God, but I really don't like to identify as a christian anymore...and I'm ready to walk away from the church. The discussion has to happen with dh, but I don't think he'll have a problem with it.

I'm just tired of the hypocrisy and faux-fellowship. If someone wants to truly get spiritual, I'm open, but I'm done with the very 'highschoolness' of the church. :(

Has anyone read the book 'Pagan Christianity'? or 'Mere Churchianity'?

These books mirror my feelings at the moment.

  5. Yeah, the Simpsons and USC stuff def. has to go...My dh is the only obstacle there.

We don't have a hall closet, but I think maybe a trunk or something in another part of the house.

The curtain idea is a good one. I wanted to paint a 'serious' color like brown, but we don't have the furniture to pull that off, so I'm thinking some kind of 'earthy' looking green, and then shabby chic an old armoire or something. I know I could organize this mess if I could just find the right places for things, not just more shelves, you know?

Thanks for all the input! I actually do still have some of the fabric that I used to cover the chairs, and I was thinking of doing a valance or something in here...maybe I have enough for curtains around the shelves?

  6. Where do you KEEP everything?!?

I'm feeling so overwhelmed right now with the way our schoolroom is set up, and usually I'm pretty organized, but I'm stumped on this one.

I'm gonna have to post some pictures and can you give me some ideas?

OK...this is all the same room. Our 'dining room/ school room' and yes, it's still dark out so it just adds to the gloom of it...

  7. I don't have bipolar, but had borderline for many years. Borderline is one that will go away on it's own, if the person is in a stable environment and support system for a period of time ranging from 6 months to 6 years. I'm very blessed about that! I did deal with depression, however, and went through counseling for that. I know members of my family have bipolar, and use medication, but I wanted to caution that medication is a temporary fix. The doses will constantly need raised, and you will still have some degree of ups and downs. If you think it's even remotely possible that there is an underlying issue, I highly recommend cognitive therapy. I can honestly say I haven't had a depression in almost a year due ONLY to the tools I obtained in counseling. I never took any anti-depressants, because I wanted to be aware of what my moods and emotions were doing from start to finish in order to deal with them. Just a thought, and maybe it's more chemical for you, but I'm just putting this out there.

I also wanted to mention that I absolutely am NOT a 'name it and claim it' christian. I know that God allows afflictions (like the 'thorn in Paul's flesh') for many reasons and this could be something like that....but it doesn't hurt to pray because I do believe in complete healing when it is within His will. :grouphug:

  8. I would skip the report, and have her tell you (narrate) about the book.

You might want to look at Biblioplan. It integrates SOTW, MOH, and Biblical History.

    Make it work for you!

We began to skip 2 lessons in each math LU (doing only the new part & then the next lesson crossing out duplicate type problems) leaving more time for oral review or take 2 days off from math during the 3 wk cycle.

With CLE reading, we did one LU then read a book for 2-3 wks before starting the next LU.

We never used CLE Bible, history, or science. We used SOTW for history, read the BIble aloud together & discussed, and used various science books/texts over the years.

Check out Homeschool Buyer's COOP for online history, science, & other products.

Thank you for the advice. I think I need to also look into some 'Charlotte Mason' type learning style stuff.

I think she needs to do all her Math and CLE is good for her, because Math is her weakness. Sometimes we have to do hard stuff, ya know?

But with Language, I think that's a good idea.

  9. Is it reasonable, at her age, if she really really enjoys reading, to just have her read a book in 2-3 weeks and then do a complete book report? In place of an actual reading curriculum?

Also, I'm thinking of doing MOH for Social Studies with the CD. She could listen to that anytime, right? I'm trying to relax things a bit for her, and lesson the 'load'. Also, Bible. What are your thoughts on that? I am more concerned about her relationship with Christ, but would like her to know about culture/ context to minimize confusion when studying. What do you think?
