  1. Ok so the consensus is 1 :) Do I just try and do 2 a year so she is done in fourth, or maybe one in the summers or shall i not worry about playing catch up??

( I havent looked into what there is for 5th grade plus, i am trying to not look too far ahead, I just want to see what is need for 3rd and if any catching up is recommended)

    Thanks!!

  2. Ok..this is my frst year HS'ing. I have a 3rd grader, pre-k, and 2YO. Does it matter what SOTW I start with? I see that they are all for grades 1-4, so what do I do with my DD starting at grade 3? They only did some American History in her ps for 2nd grade so she hasn't covered any of it

  3. is AMAZING!! I have never been part of a more friendly, helpful forum ever. You all answer questions over and over and are kind and patient. You are making my HS dilemma so much easier. I have read and read thread after thread and yet still have questions and you have all been wonderful answering them and not making me feel like an idiot.

I have been a member of forums where people get so sick of the questions that they constantly post "use the search option" I always use the search option first, but sometimes still cannot get a clear picture or answer, or I just want new updated info. Not a single person here has done that. You all answer or post a link to threads. I really am totally elated that I found this place!!! You are all going to be my new bff's :D

I am scared and overhelmed as this will be my first year and you are just making me feel right at home. I am sure God sent me here to make my HS journey a great one. :001_smile:

  4. I am planning for my first HS year (help me God) :)

    I have 3rd grader, pre-k, and a 2 year old.

I am going subject by subject trying to choose curriculum for the 3rd grader. Language arts is killing me. I have a very small budget for this. I would love to get PR but probably cannot afford that.

    Anyways....I have to cover:

reading (which she is reading at 4th grade level and i will just print out AO booklist and have her read those)

    writing

    grammar

    spelling

Does that cover all of LA? I am kind of worried about this. It seems like a lot if I do it all seperate.

  5. Thank you all for your stories. I tend to really take to heart what my DH says or thinks, and yet he thinks I dont LOL anyways I am scared to do this without 100% support. he is now to the "how bad can we screw up a year stage" right along with me :001_smile: I guess I am only a tad more gung ho than he is, so I think it will be OK. Education was never important in his family, no one even made him think he could go to college. So I explained how this further their education by them geting one on one help.e is just VERY resistant to change, and mean even the littlest change like new furniture arrangement, or new dinners. He freaks, so this is a HUGE step for him. SO SCARY!! lol I go back and forth from being excited and wanting to cry. Nothing is set in stone until I dont register them for school in the Fall, but we are set on 100% decision by June 15th so i can start July 1st (I am babysitting in the fall and want to be all set with our plans and schedule and have the kids a little ahead so we can all transition as smooth as possible)

  6. It is a fairly active group from the looks of it, although I haven't met anyone in person yet since I'm still in California. I'm sure you could work out a good park day when people could bring various things for you to look at and you could talk to people.

I have a fair collection of curriculum that I'd be willing to lug to a park to show you once we arrive in late July or early August, I should have a lot of things that would interest you since our children are close in age.

Send me an e-mail to my "real" e-mail near the end of July if you still need to look at things by then, I may not check in as much here en route but will check my e-mail, here's my "real" e-mail:

THANK YOU! Are you moving on base or just near? Will you be joining that group? I will look into it!

  7. Where in Illinois are you? I'll be moving there this summer. There is a nice Yahoo group for people in the area of Scott AFB and also some homeschooling groups in the Chicago area

I am in Southern Il, about 40 mins from Scott AFB. I checked out some groups and that seems to be the closest so far. :-)

I would suggest that you check you library for the following titles.

The Well-Trained Mind by Susan Wise Bauer

The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling by Debra Bell

For 3rd grade I would also gently suggest that you look for curriculum that you can purchase for arithmetic and language arts.

Thanks for the book recommendations! I totally agree with buying cirriculum for those areas. I think I didnt explain myself too well there. I just didnt want to buy a full out curriculum in a box. I wanted to get a list of "subjects" and then handpick from there. I dont want to just teach from a textbook and hand out worksheets type thing. Thats why I liked AO and I have been looking over the CM sites too. thanks!!

It's a great read. Also, are you looking for Chrisitian or secular? Knowing that could help us steer you towards other things. Have you looked into math yet? Like I said, I'm really loopey, so I hope this made some sense.

    Angela

You made great sense for being loopey! I am looking for Christian and I havemt settled on a Math. Just when I think I like one, I read somethign about another! I am leaning towards Saxon right now.

If you are going to do your own curriculum, I recommend Home Learning Year By Year by Rebecca Rupp. It has a complete scope and sequence for every year for Pre-K thru grade 12 for both traditional and classical approaches. It also has book lists to tie in reading for almost every item--even math.

Thank you! Sounds like exactly what I am needing!

  8. Ok, I have been reading for days :001_smile: I will be starting a 4YO and a 7YO (also have a 2YO)

So I am planning for a preschool and 3rd grade curriculum. We are very low on funds. I want to make my own curriculum ( I am willing to buy certain bits and pieces of some) not buy a boxed set. I have looked over AO and a million other free curriculums.

Can anyone tell me or point me to a list of what each grade basically needs to learn? I would feel ten times better if I just started with a simple list of subjects and basic skills each grade learns/needs to work on. like when do you start Science and Grammar? And what LA skills should a 3rd grader know?

I am in Illinois so I have no Hs rules. I am super list oriented and I think if I could get a basic outline of what subjects I should be teaching and what skills in each subject should be covered, then I could get rolling on picking out what curriculums I want to use, or if I can go to the library and format my own.

MAJOR thanks in advance for anyone willing to share some knowledge with me. I am feeling lost and overhwlened and the more I read, the more I get scared that I cannot do this!

  9. Hi all! first post here. I have 3 kids....dd7 ds4 ds2

I never in a million years thought I would even consider homeschooling, but lately it is all that is on my mind. I really want to start ASAP.

My DH is a little hesitant. Its basically the old what about socialization, and think what they will miss from not being at the public school stuff. Nothing too serious, and I feel that if we discussed it more he would agree to let me try it for at least a year.

Anyways, I am hesitant to begin if he is not 100% onboard and I was just wondering if anyone else jumped on the HS boat without their DH being all for it? How did that go?

  10. Aldi.com has a free menu planner that rocks. Once you pllan your weekly menu you can make it into a shopping list. You dont get the price list on there, but you can make that yourself as you make various recipies. this way you can choose exactly what you want to eat and just print the list and go shop. It saves me money just having the plan. as I purchase the ingredients for a recipie I note the prices. Super easy and FREE
