  1. I did an Internet search for functional medicine doctors in my city.  Apparently, functional medicine is a new thing; I only found one or two in my area.

Thanks!  I know that there aren't any D.O.s in the area.  I wonder if there are any functional medicine docs. Off to check.

  2. I just finished my shawl for my sick friend, a pair of socks which i had put in hibernation forever and I am 99.999999999% done with my Central Park Hoodie--which was in hibernation for 7 years!! I just have to block one of the front bands and then I will photograph it.

On my needles now, I have the Cadence Socks for my "small portable project" and am debating on starting a blanket. I like this one: Hex Afghan but wondering if I should stick to smaller projects since i just started knitting again after a 3 year hiatus.

What's on your needles? What have you recently finished? I love looking at FOs so please share!

The shawl is lovely!  I forgot about the Central Park Hoodie.  I remember loving that pattern, but not starting it because I had too many UFOs!

    This week I just finished a shawl that I started….in 2007.  :o

  3. I think you should be fine with a left handed crochet bind off. Wouldn't your hands just be reversed? Or if it's just a tidy edge and stretchy bind off that you need, could you try a suspended bind off, or maybe bind off with a needle a couple of sizes larger?

I think that when I've done crocheting in the past my hands were just reversed.  But since this is adding some sort of decorative edge as it binds off I couldn't hold the hook in my left hand because of all the stitches still being on the needles.  (That probably doesn't even make sense.  The instructions basically say not to bind off, to leave the stitches on the needle, and "insert crochet hook through the next 3 sts and slip off needle, yo and draw through all std on hook, chain 7; rep from * to last 3 sts…")  I couldn't do that with my right hand, and when I tried to do it with my left hand it didn't seem quite right with where the yarn was coming from.  But I think it might be okay if I flip it wrong side up like Closedacademy suggested.  I'm going to give it a try.  Here's hoping!

  4. You could probably flip the shawl over (so wrong side is up) and do it with your left hand.  I'm trying to think how I crochet and I think I hold the yarn with my right and the hook in my left (I probably do it both ways.)

Thank you!  I'll give this a try.

  5. I was recently inspired to pick up a knitting project that I'd left unfinished for too long.  The good news is that I'm almost finished!  The bad news is that I can't figure out how to finish it.   :glare:

It is a shawl pattern by Lion Brand.  http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/60301.html?noImages=

The Finishing requires a crochet bind-off, which would be okay except that I'm a lefty who knits righty.  I've done a very, very small amount of crocheting left-handed.  I've tried watching some videos on how to do this type of finishing but I can't make my right hand do what it needs to do.  Does anybody here know if I could finish this with the crochet hook in my left hand?

    TIA!

  6. We were considering it last year, but unfortunately it didn't work out.  I know that someone here has done it because when I was researching the Camino I found a couple of threads here, but now I can't find them. (I tried the search feature here as well as searching this site through Google and neither yielded any results.)  :confused1:

    Which route are you considering?

  7. And I have to exclaim: I did not know the strong connection between Hobby Lobby and ATI! I mostly ignored the whole HL-Birth Control issue and pretended it didn't matter to me, but I can't stand ATI and am very disappointed to find out that HL supports them in such a substantial way. I can't go there anymore knowing that. Dang it.

I agree! We recently moved to an area with Hobby Lobby and I bought something there the other day before learning of the connection. After reading about it, I returned it yesterday and I will not be darkening that doorway again.

  8. I'm tiptoeing quietly (trimmed my toenails LOL) to say - I'd be thinking of the type of fabric they use on the heavy duty Kuranda beds. So probably Cordura textured nylon, or 40oz vinyl.

I'm kind of fanatical about nails too but yeah even well trimmed nails will gouge things.

Can we make it a psa on how to trim nails though? for those unlike the OP who don't know?

    why?

    how

    i'm tiptoeing out.... :leaving:

Thanks for posting those.  The video by the vet was particularly interesting.

Thank you. I agree it is an issue, I've seen it. My wording was off as well. I know what you were picturing, I'm thinking more of what happens when they dig.

No fear, your awesomeness is still intact.

So a Tom Bihn hammock would be good, if they made one. It'd probably cost $1000 or more, though.

In a show of goodwill, I will extend the title of this post for those that don't know.

Thank you.  I knew that my dog's nails were in need of trimming (despite the vet recently saying they were fine), but this provided the motivation to actually get out the clippers and give it a go.

Good luck finding a hammock. We love the hammock we have, but it is a woven one and the dog doesn't get in it.

  9. Just a quick update.  I started the magnesium that night and in about two days it was much better.  It isn't totally gone yet, but the difference is remarkable.  I can no longer see it twitching, and instead of it twitching nearly constantly it feels more like it is trying to twitch but can't quite do it.

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

  10. I'm going to make our transcript by subject not year as we are schooling year round. We also ended up switching some curricula which means we are "off" from the regular school year. We are almost halfway through Algebra 1 (now that its clicked for her) and almost done with Biology. I know she needs to be stronger in Algebra before we start Chemistry. She would like to study Natural History after seeing it listed on the college website of a great books school.

I found this syllabus and am thinking of using it until we finish Algebra. So I'm unsure if we would make it a half or whole credit. Either way is this a acceptable science credit or would it be more of a academic elective?

The syllabus does include a long Naturalist type project with essays and lab forms.

Bumping this old post to see if you ended up using that Natural History curriculum and if so what you thought of it.

    Thanks!
