    Hi,

     

    About a year and a half ago I read about Dave Ramsey on these boards and then checked out his book from the library. My husband and I have always been pretty good with our money and didn't have a lot of debt. What we lacked was a good wealth building plan. We both devoured his book and got to work with our "baby steps." We now have an emergency fund, no debt, 6 months living expenses saved (both for our home and our office...we're self employed), and have funded our retirement for the year. We are working towards adding more to our college plans now.

     

    The cool news is that my husband is now an ELP (Endorsed Local Provider) for Dave Ramsey in our area! He is an Enrolled Agent and is now an ELP for Tax Services for Dave Ramsey. (When people look for endorsed tax practitioners in our area, they will referred to my husband's business.) God's timing is so cool. A year ago my husband looked into it and they were only accepting CPA's. I stumbled across it on his website this weekend and saw that they accept EA's. My husband filled out the application and got an immediate e-mail on Monday morning, and then a follow up call. The man scheduled a phone interview for yesterday (Thursday). They talked for two hours and they both felt like it was a fit. The man said he had interviewed 9 other applicants for our area, but none were a good fit. He sent him the contract and they talked again this morning.

     

    A lot of IRL friends have never heard of Dave Ramsey...so I wanted to share it with people who have heard of him and appreciate his advice.

     

    And the icing on the cake is that Dave is doing a "live" show in our area in September and we get free VIP tickets!

    My youngest has been spending the week with my parents about 2 hours away. They made him a cow costume...complete with cow bell...and took him to get breakfast where they lived and then brought him home to us. We then went to lunch at ours and then went to a different one for dinner. He had a ball! My older two are away with their youth group and are going to be upset when they hear he had Chick Fil A three times in one day!

     

    And the costume is big enough that he should be able to wear it again next year....

     

    It was fun!

    Community college courses: high school credit

    Depends on the class. I would ask your community college about their dual enrollment program. They should be able to give you the number of high school credits. My son is taking a 3 credit hour math class that counts as 1 high school credit. He is also going to take French, a 4 credit hour class that counts for 1 high school credit. If he were to take American History 1, a 3 credit hour class, it would only count for .5 of a high school credit. I would definitely check with the college.

    edited to say we live in Florida. Homeschool students can be dually enrolled in community college after they complete 9th grade. We have to pay for books only.

    Wow! You are lucky to have recovered your bike. We had two stolen from our garage the last week of May, with the same situation you described. The boys had been in and out of the garage...and the garage door was up. One was a "clunker" of a bike, but our ds 10 lost his birthday present bike. We didn't recover the bikes, but they each love their new bikes.

     

    It has caused us to be more careful about shutting the garage door now. We, too, live on a quiet, safe street. I'm also thankful that they didn't enter my house...or yours.

     

    Kind of creepy...

    Voluntary, universal pre-school. Hmm, this sounds more like I'm not going to raise the compulsory age at the national level but I'm not going to discourage the individual states if they want to. We have to get them young.

     

    I do not like this Zero to Five terminology, it seems the government is saying, "since you're not going to do your job as parents, give them to us as early as possible so we can do the job."

     

    I will say this, McCain's Education information is more empowering to the parents than Obama's. Although I'm leaning towards McCain, my dh is trying to convince me that Obama is the better choice. I've been comparing the two for a while now.

     

    I agree with you on the zero to five terminology. We don't need the government taking our place as parents. I've seen what big government has/can do, and I think as individuals we can do a better job!

    My 15 ds (10th grader) is a college student, too! He registered on Friday and has his schedule. I couldn't believe how EASY it was to dual enroll him. I had a nice transcript ready...and they didn't even look at it!!! In Florida, homeschoolers get free tuition and application fee....we will just have to pay for his books. He didn't have to take the College Placement Test...he just used his SAT scores. He is taking a Intermediate Algebra (Algebra II) and French I. He was hoping to get his student ID so he could go to "College Night" at Chick Fil A on Thursday night, but they aren't doing them until August! He already knows someone in his class...one of his best friends from his youth group!

     

    If he does well with these classes, we may consider adding another in the spring. It is exciting, isn't it?! (My son, who isn't one to show emotions, was even smiling on Friday!)

    online latin - thoughts please

    We haven't used the online class, but have really enjoyed (well, they have learned!) Latin with Latin in the Christian Trivium. Both sons have done well and earned ribbons and medals on the National Latin Exam. It doesn't cover Roman mythology, but you could easily add that in if you want.

     

     

    I have read good things about their online classes.

    If you are going to use the SAT again next year, you may want to get a copy of "Scoring High for the SAT". It gives examples, tips, practice tests. Sometimes they may miss a problem because they don't know the terminology the test is asking...it was in our case. We haven't gotten our scores back yet, but I think my son is going to do a lot better on the math (we use MUS/Singapore) because he was exposed to the practice tests. It also gave him confidence going into the test....knowing that he had done well on the practice tests.

     

    I have the 4th grade "Scoring High" student and teacher workbooks that I need to get around to selling, if you are interested. They are in like new condition. E-mail me or send me a pm if you are interested.

     

    I agree that the scores will be more meaningful to you next year since you will have a benchmark.
