  1. Supplement here...

We use Usborne World History as our spine and read the corresponding chapters in SOTW.  We don't have the AG, but use Pinterest and other resources for projects.  I create notebooking pages and copywork/vocabulary sheets for each week.  It seems to be working and my son enjoys history.

  2. Wow!  It's been a while since I started a topic around here.  I fear this won't be eloquent due to frequent interruptions.   :)

We have been using (and loving) the Usborne Art Treasury for our more involved art projects.  We love seeing the full color original art in the book and reading about the piece and the artist, then doing the project.

I have been looking for something to help us continue in this way, but most things I've researched have fell short in some way or another (or are simply out of our price range.. which is microscopic).

Does anyone know of a similar book to the Usborne Art Treasury that we could use next year?

  3. OMG!! A Christmas miracle. (jumps for joy - waves hi) And it would be years before my jazz would be considered sweet. You could come over and jam with me, in your TARDIS. My neighbor has drums, it would be block jam.

So if you get the TARDIS, can I get a replicator?

I know... it's been a while since I showed my ugly mug around here, eh?

    I'd love to jam!

I'll see what I can do about getting you a replicator, m'dear!

  4. It is a tiny concern for me, because I am homeschooling an only (for all intents and purposes... my stepson lives with his own mother).

My son is an exuberant extrovert with a vivid imagination who isn't afraid to speak his mind. He has no friends who aren't related to him. (He doesn't see his cousins very often.)

We have recently joined our local homeschool group and started going to park days. He wants to play soccer this fall and try co-op. Awana may be in the plan, as well.

I don't want to be his only friend. He wants friends so badly it breaks this momma's heart (but not enough to enroll him in the local school). He is constantly telling me that he will "make a friend" whenever we go somewhere.

  5. Character

The Beginner's Bible (he will read this to Mommy)

    Gotta Have God

The Children's Book of Virtues (and other appropriate read-alouds)

    Language Arts

Finish Hooked on Phonics and Phonics Pathways

    Explode the Code (4, 5, maybe 6)

D'Nealian Copywork (taken from our readings)

    First Language Lessons 1

All About Spelling 2 (possibly 3)

    Math

    Singapore 1B & 2A (with IP & CWP)

    Rightstart Games

    Geography

    Me on the Map Lapbook

Continent studies with both geographical and cultural emphasis

    Science

Singapore Start Up Science (we'll see how this goes... he likes it, I don't. I'm formulating a new plan as I type.)

    Music

I will print photos of the artist/composer/relevant genre images to hang up and we will listen as we do our schoolwork.

    Art

Usborne Art Treasury (a bit of appreciation and a bit of application)

I'm sure I've forgotten something, but that's the gist of it.

  6. So then I should get off this mini panic and just teach any unknown words as ds's are reading books? Why am I panicking about this all the sudden? This isn't my first time teaching a dc to read

This is what we did and I would do a quick explanation of whichever more advanced phonics rule fit the word in question. The bonus was that he would fly through the more advanced phonics concept when we came to it.

We use a combo of HOP and PP. HOP uses some sight words, but I've taught them all phonetically. I think that teaching those words phonetically has helped his outside reading much, much more than if I had taught him to simply memorize it.

We still haven't officially reached "igh" in our phonics, but he knows how to read knight, light, bright, sighing, insight, etc.

I'd just keep doing what you're doing.

  7. My son will be officially a kindergartener this fall. Here are our plans, unless our Summer doesn't play out as expected.

    • Finish up Phonics Pathways
    • Continue reading to Mommy daily
    • ETC 4, 5, 6.. however far he goes this year
    • AAS 2 & 3 (again, we'll just keep going)
    • Singapore 1B, 2A with all the fixins
    • Continue D'Nealian handwriting through copywork
    • First Language Lessons
    • Geography intro (continents, oceans , landforms, etc) & World Cultures
    • Science - overview of various concepts and hands-on fun
    • Character/Virtues
    • Lots and lots of read-alouds
    • Weekly artist study and project
    • Music - listening to a genre/artist/composer as we work and play until we feel like moving to a new one.

Most of this is a continuation of PK here. It looks like a lot, but it doesn't really take him long to complete his work.
