  1. Does anyone know of a typing program that rewards the child with an opportunity to play a video-like game after completing the lesson? I have Type To Learn and it only rewards them with an introduction to a person in history...pretty boring for my son who loves video games and would gladly do a lesson if it meant getting to a game.

This could be a program or an online program, either one.

    Thank you for any help!

    Kelly

  2. Bumping for you. I haven't used WP, but we will be using CTG this coming year! I can't wait!

CTG does look good...I hope you and your children have a great time with it!

We used MFW ECC this year and my son liked it and learned alot of geography and science. I like the look of the sample MFW offers of their CTG but the sample of WP Ancient looks fun and interesting and an interesting variety of books that go with it. I would love to hear from anyone who may have used both or at least been able to get a better look at it.

  3. We absolutely LOVE our Roku! It's fascinating our friends too! Since giving up cable (except for the 12 very basic local channels), the Roku has been used more than the regular TV. My boys are loving all the options, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the resurrection of old kid shows like Fraggle Rock and Inspector Gadget. Their favorite right now is a movie called Tugger about a WWII Jeep who wants to fly. The educational shows are a huge hit with my oldest.

You, too, Jennifer...what type of TV did you hook your Roku to? We have an older one so wondering if I need a newer HD type. Thank you!

  4. I did some transcribing for the company dh works for, and used the money to buy a Roku player. I am impressed! I feel like my Netflix membership is SUCH a huge bargain now! So many movies, old TV shows, documentaries, etc., are available. I loaded up our instant queue already. It took us minutes to set it up, and works beautifully.Wendi

I want to get a Roku player but not sure if I should get the SD variety or the HD and was wondering if you could help, Wendy. We have an older TV, not an HD type. Would the HD Roku work on our TV anyways, do you know? I could probably find this out on the website but since you have first hand experience I thought it would be easier to ask you!

What kind of TV did you hook yours to?

    Thank you!

  5. I used SL with a 13yo and 15yo. It was alot of reading and not much, if any, hands on activities. It worked ok for them but I thought it was boring after doing Unit Studies with my 2 older ones years earlier. Winters Promise looks very well done with lots of activities and interesting books. From the sampler on their site I am considering using it for my youngest who will be 10 next school year.

Just my 2 cents worth :)

  6. It explains the theory, but it also tells you what to do, section by section, each year for four years. Each section has a sample week, so you know what pattern to use. You can use this without having to buy the workbooks, selecting your own reading from which to write narrations/dictations/copywork.

Colleen, your input has been most helpful, also! It's nice to have a place to share what we have done and know about to help others...especially if it saves us money and hairloss from worrying :001_smile: I will probably just get a workbook....Thank you so much!

  7. I try everyday to have my son remember and sing for me one of the history sentences that he has learned throughout the year. I will usually do this in the afternoon after he is done with schoolwork and just playing or helping in the kitchen. If we can't remember it together we will go to the computer and find that particular one together and play it. I just do this sporadically like a pop quiz! Makes it fun and not laborious.

  8. I have one Homeschool main folder that I put other folders in, like one folder will be titled "Art Studies" which will include all the great sites I find that have art curriculum I like and would love to use someday. Other examples are "Science Sites" under which I would also put some sub folders titles "Astronomy Studies", "Biology Stuff", "Places to by Experiments", etc. HTH!

  9. Our ds age 10, but he was 9 when he started WWE ... a late reader and very reluctant writer, but now he's getting better is on WWE Level 2. It's working out very well. Narration, copywork ... dictation starts at level 2. Yes, I would think you could start with a 10-year-old who doesn't like writing. We only use the Workbooks. HTH.

Thank you for your help, Negin! Did you start him at 9 with Level 1? I'm wondering if I should start with Level 1 because there is a particular format that needs to be followed or can I jump into any level?

So just using the workbooks was enough for your son...that's good to know. The less books I need to get the better. Is the Strong Fundamentals book basically a teacher manual and explains the theory behind the program?

  10. I've lurked here for a while and I registered just so I could answer your question :)

The Scientist's Apprentice uses 4 MSB books along with 4 DK eyewitness explorers. It includes lots of hands on activities with each lesson. It's for K-6. I found it through Rainbow Resource.

I know its been awhile, but I just found your post and was wondering what you thought of The Scientists Apprentice program?

I just heard about it and am considering it for my soon to be 10yo.

    Thank you for any help!

  11. Our Foundations 7-9 tutor used simple drawing for the prepositions which were so helpful for my son...even me! Hand motions are great too, but for visual learners pictures help. On C3 the pics with the History Sentences really help!
