  1. I have no idea but I had discussed with DH that if the younger 3 never went to any public that perhaps a strong basis at the local CC would be enough to then transfer to a regular 4 year. DH is in the technology field and said that he looks less for college and more for experience b/c colleges don't really teach what he needs to hire! Microsoft training and certifications mean more to him.

  2. #1. "No weirder than I am now! Do you have any plans for Superbowl?"

#2. "Have you seen the classrooms? I'm sure they'll be fine! Aren't you getting tired of all this snow?"

#3. "No weirder than they are now! So what are you doing for Superbowl?"

#4. "Trust me, colleges actively recruit homeschoolers now. There's nothing to worry about. Have you found any new sledding hills?"

#5. "Oh, you can bet we'll be out in the real world! Are you going to watch the Superbowl?"

That's how you "pass the bean dip," answer briefly and/or vaguely, then change the subject.

Since you're using ABeka, I'm assuming you prayed about this decision. I've answered comments in the past with, "God just really put it on our hearts to hs, so we'll be doing this as long as it's His plan for our family!" No one can really argue with that one.

For those closer family members who really don't understand and for whom you care to share with, you can be very reassuring, "I know you're concerned. But you know we wouldn't do this if it weren't in the best interests of our family. We can always change our minds later. For now, I welcome your support!"

Of course, you may still have people who disagree. It's always best to not engage. You're not raising your kids for them, you don't have to answer to them, and you probably would not make many of the same decisions as they've made in their lives.

And congratulations!!!!! Have FUN!!!! Hsing was one of the best decisions we ever made for our family. We had no idea it would turn out like this!!!

Actually I am not what you would call religious but am using it on rec from another HSer. I am hoping that it will help enlighten me and bring me back to feeling more in touch with my religious roots-KWIM?

  3. I have just this week pulled my DS from school and will not be sending the 2 girls back next year. (oldest DS is in HS and loves it and the DS I just pulled will go on to middle school next year).

Anyway here are the comments I am getting and I want to answer with well thought out answers.

    1. You aren't going to get all weird now are you?

    2. Your kids will not be able to adjust to classrooms after being home with you.

    3. Your kids will not have any social skills and be weird.

    4. They won't get into colleges.

    5. They won't get enough exposure to the "real" world.

    Thanks for your help.

  4. Because if they thought otherwise they'd have to actually do something, which might involve homeschooling, and they're not willing to do that.

True. My kids are in public right now(with the exception of the one I just pulled) and I felt very defeated and unable to get what I wanted. At one point I thought perhaps going in everyday and being involved in their classes would change the problems but why do all that work when I can keep them here and educate them better for the same amount of effort. Now I have to tell you that as a mom to 6 I was just beginning to see the light at the end of the "tunnel" with the thought of getting the youngest in preschool in 2 years. FREEDOM!!! FINALLY!!!

Now I have swung around and basically committed myself to 11 more years of being home everyday or more if they don't go to middle school public. My friends are stunned that I would do this.

  5. Oh that's normal! Of all my 6 the only one that spoke that early was DS #1 and he knew his dang colors at 15 months!! My little guy just grunts, shakes his head no, waves bye, and does all the "tricks" that his siblings taught him. He was also running by 10 months which was new for me too. Don't stress b/c soon enough you will be looking for tape!!

  6. Finally, I have found the Saxon lovers on this forum. I have been singing the praises of Saxon on this forum for many months and felt I was the "odd man out". I have taught Saxon for many years in private school and have seen the results in all types of students. As a home schooler, you have the privilege of tweaking any program to fit your student. You can slow down, camp out and supplement, do two lessons at a time if he is getting it, or whatever. I find that most students do well with Saxon's method. For those who don't know, Mr. Saxon was a chemistry teacher in Georgia and he could never get the students to enroll in his class because they were afraid of the math (this was years ago before everyone took chemistry). He developed the math from the top down and designed it so the students wouldn't be afraid of the math in chemistry. That's why the elementary program was written by someone else originally and wasn't available until many years after Alg 1/2 thru Advanced Math/Trig. Mr. Saxon's method is incremental. I call it the "baby step" method because as someone else said you learn a small part of the procedure at a time. I am teaching my 9th grade granddaughter Algebra II and she is flying with it and understands the principle, procedures, etc. In private school only the students with LD had to have math tutoring in this program and they would have had to have tuturing in any math program. I agree with finding a program and sticking to it.

I don't think anyone has talked about the lesson instruction being scripted and lasting only about 10-15 minutes. Also, a bird in the hand........... would apply in this economy with the Saxon you have. It's a sound program and so effective that in Georgia several years ago many counties went rogue and adopted Saxon when state doe adopted another math program. The PS results were dramatically higher scores on the standardized tests at the end of the first year. It was probably the greatest free advertising the Saxon publishers ever had!

I am trying the 65 program with my DS who I just yanked out of school(very long story). He is in 5th and tested for 65. He is a self starter and picks up things very quickly so I think this method will fit him. He would not have the patience for the spiraling b/c he is like me and just wants to learn it and do it most times. I look forward to commenting on the Saxon math and grammar threads in the future since we will be using both. The choices are astounding!
