  1. Okay, who knows anything about epiphysiodesis? Basically, my 14 year old onson’s scoliosis has gotten much better. I think he has a 10 degree curve or maybe if was 12... whatever it’s been getting better. But he’s an inch shorter on one leg and I think the curve goes towards that leg and the doc is concerned and wants to do this epiphysiodesis on him and remove the growth plate from his knee and I’m not gonna lie, that makes my knees weak. I get it’s not a big procedure and he should be fine. But is it necessary? I’m an inch shorter on one leg and never even knew until my chiropractor told me. Anyone been there and done this?

  2. We put both of our older kids on ours when they started driving. As a bonus, they inherited our great credit score. I also liked that I could have them pick up groceries, take out, etc. without having to get them cash or whatever. We will put our youngest on it when he turns 16. Obviously, you have to have trustworthy kids for this to work.

  3. I use Progessence Plus oil blend from young living. I’m not an oil expert or really use any other oils. I tried this because I was desperate and it works. I got mine on eBay because it was cheaper with free shipping than ordering from a rep. I put 4 drops on my neck each morning and no more hot flashes and other not so fun stuff.

Oh thank you! I too have looked at so many airline cards but have never taken the plunge. For some reason, I present them to my husband and he never thinks it's a good deal. He much prefers our 1% back on Discover, although I know there must be better things out there. I will definitely look into this! We mostly try to rent houses when we do travel, but now and again, I'd sure like to experience a hotel.

The Discover deal might be a better return. I think I looked at it once and decided I’d spend that money I got back on other stuff, but the hotel nights would get used for travel. So I stuck with that. There might be other hotel cards that are good too. I just fell into this one while planning a trip years ago and stuck with it. We really like the comfort suites because they sleep 6. We are currently a family of 4, but my teens don’t love sharing a bed because our ds is all over the place.

  5. Here is one tip that has helped us travel. I have a choice hotels visa. I got it about 12 years ago and have racked up free hotel nights. We charge everything we can on it and pay our balance off each month. With a family of 8, you would need two rooms, but it is still very doable. They do offer some blue green resorts that sleep 8. We went to Las Vegas and Utah - two years ago and didn’t spend any money on lodging. Same with staying in midtown Manhattan last year. I think I had to spend $100 on extra points to cover it, but we stayed 6 nights in one of the priciest places. A couple weeks ago, we spent 6 nights outside of Washington DC and 2 nights in the Shenandoah for free. You get 2 points for every dollar spent. The hotel outside of DC was 12000 points a night. The hotel in NYC was about 20000 points. Sounds like a lot, but we probably average 9000 to 10,000 points a month just from paying our electric, cell phone, internet, insurance, groceries, gas, and all household bills in that visa. I’ve looked at airfare cards, but we seem to get more from having a free hotel. You really might want to check it out.

Wait! Woah! I did not initially realize that both the OP and Keri in SC were both “Keri”s. How serendipitous!

Also, Kari C - there  you are! I had not seen you since the board change!

Yes, I’ve been absent for a long while. No real reason, just life. It’s nice to be remembered. Thanks.

More specifically, what were hoping the oil was going to fix or address for you? I’d be really careful before I started messing around with hormone levels on my own sans supervision from someone like a doctor or an endocrinologist. It can be easy to reason that it’s “safe” or “more natural” because of who sells it or because it’s OTC or because of what the label reads, but as Mergath points out, since it’s not regulated by the FDA there’s no guarantee that it contains what it says it does or that it will work to address whatever issue you might want addressed.

I just wanted to address only using a doctor. I spent the entirety of last year only using my doctor to straighten out my hormones. I can tell you that she mainly prescribed different HRT with the instructions to “try them, play with the dosages, get a feel for what is right for you”.  Nothing she prescribed was full proof. Much of it had crazy side effects. I am not really a person that is into oils or even more natural therapies. But I can tell you my frustration of trying many different prescribed therapies only to be left with more troubles. Doctors are not perfect at everything. Sometimes there are alternatives that work better. I’m glad I was willing to try other ideas because I’m feeling much better than I was a year ago.

  8. I use it! I just started using it a couple months ago. I don’t sell young living. I bought mine off of eBay because I’m not interested in mlm. My background is that I’m 46, been in peri menopause for a couple years, and have tried several types of hormone replacement therapy. All of those had side effects that I just couldn’t continue. I was getting a bit desperate and decided to try this. I am not a huge oil user. I have a lavender roll on inuse for sinus headaches, but that’s it. So this whole oil idea was pretty new to me. I can tell you that this stuff has worked for me. No more hot flashes, night sweats, and my period is back to be regular and on time instead of skipping months here and there. I put 4 drops on my neck in the morning and that’s it. I would guess the one bottle will last about 6 months. It cost me $43 on eBay. I don’t have any plans to sign up for mlm - I will just buy this as needed. Hope this helps.

ETA - young living is the only one with this blend. If plant therapy came out with a less expensive version, I’d give it a try. For now, this is the only place with it. It costs about $7 a month.  I was spending $18 on HRT.

  9. Yes, this happened to me at 45. I tried several different Hormone replacement therapies to fix all of it. They all just came with more side effects. I finally tired this progessence plus oil from young living. I had never used oils, so I’m not an “oily” person, but I was willing to try just about anything. This oils blend really helps. I rub 4 drops on my neck in the morning and no more hot flashes, night sweats and my periods are normal timing. I bought mine off of eBay because I wasn’t interested in MLM.

  10. I usually teach middle and high school. I’ve done art using all sorts of Pinterest ideas. I’ve also done cupcake decorating and easy cooking, again using Pinterest. My friend and I did a games class and mini weapons of mass destruction using the book and office supplies. All of these classes have gone over pretty well. Obviously, I’m more on an enrichment/fun sort of teacher. I just don’t do well with harder subjects.

  11. Hello.  I have just recently come across Acellus tutoring website where it is $10 a month for up to 6 classes. I have been watching lots of the videos, but am still on the fence. I guess I wonder about the lack of a text or real books. I am looking for a college bound, 9th grader. Specifically, thinking about biology, English I, and US History. Any input? Thanks!

ETA - For Engish I, I would add in IEW for writing.

  12. If this is in a public school setting, I would say always go with honors classes when possible. My dh teaches both honors and regular classes, and the behavior issues in the regular classes alone would be enough to want my kids in the honors classes even if they struggled through.

Algebra is something you can supplement at home through online programs or tutors if he needs it.

He is homeschooled and taking online classes with High School Math Live. Sorry, I didn’t include that info.

  13. Parents that have had to make the decision between honors algebra vs. regular algebra... what’s the benefit? Obviously more knowledge, but is the extra time and energy worth it? Does it equate to higher SAT/ACT scores, etc? My dis is going into 9th next year. Sorta. His September birthday says he’s going into 8th. His skills say otherwise. His math teacher is saying he could easily go the honors route, but it’s not necessary. He’s college bound. With scholarship - straight to USC. Without scholarship, Midlands Tech and then transfer to USC. So, tell me your experiences. Thanks!

  14. I put my phone on do-not-disturb at night. So does everyone I know. If someone needs to reach you in an emergency then they can call you twice right after each other and it will bypass the do-not-disturb. I think that you can also set it so that certain numbers can reach you. With today's options I think the no texting after 9 rule is a bit old fashioned.

I'm so thankful my son showed me this option a few years back. I don't really care about night texts, but I don't love the 6am texts that I get from some of our tenants. Do not disturb is my friend.

  15. I've spent hours and hours and hours trying to decide on pre algebra for my going into 7th grade son. He has been doing Saxon 7/6 with a Landry Academy teacher. It has been good. So, now I must decide where to put him next. The Mr. D video only option is attractive for only $200 for the year, but I also like the set up of two classes a week at the highschoolmathlive site. Somebody help me choose, please. I beg you. I am tired of thinking about math!

  16. I have $6000 invested in this company in the form of generic credits right now, and my kids were just starting their very first classes this coming spring. They have not even taken ONE CLASS with Landry yet. I am beside myself right now. I have purchased their books for the upcoming classes as well. So many people spoke so highly of them. :(

I am in the same boat as you with a large investment of generics. We have been with Landry for 3 years and thought enough of the classes to take a leap and purchase in bulk. I'm very nervous about this investment primarily and also troubled because this was our plan for junior high and high school for our youngest child.

  17. We own 8 rental properties - 7 of them in in HOA neighborhoods. All of my tenants must adhere to the basic HOA rules just like anyone else. If we get a letter from the HOA, we contact the tenant. If the tenant chose not to fix the problem, they would we charged a fee from their security deposit and ultimately evicted. We have NEVER had that problem with any of our tenants. Generally, it is a simple fix and they take care of it quickly. 3 of our rentals are in the neighborhood we live in. Of those - 2 houses have a better looking yard than our OWN! It really depends on the tenant and how they feel about landscaping, etc. as landlords, we do pressure wash and make repairs as needed. We also do major tree trimming. The rest is up to our tenants and I honestly don't see a negative side from our tenants over the actual owner occupants in this neighborhood.

  18. Not doing photo ( or any) cards this year, our 7 year old passed away this spring & I just don't want to write a " we lost a kid & gained a kid" letter, so we're also skipping adoption announcements which we've always done for our last adoptions.

First, I'm sending you hugs. My 21 year old son was killed in a car accident in 2010. I completely understand not wanting to do cards. I struggled with that. The only reason I forced myself to push though it was because I had been sending cards, pics, and a letter since he was born and I still had a 5 year old and 11 year old. So, I somehow got through. I asked my kids how they wanted to include their brother in our family picture. My dd suggested using his big, obnoxious Jack Skellington hat because he was wearing that in our last family picture together at Disney. And so, now, our official family pictures always include his hat. I also write a memory of him for his spot in our Christmas letter. I know healing is raw and personal. And it is okay to skip stuff or stop all together. Be extra kind to yourself. I am sending you prayers that I always pray - for strength and peace.

  19. I think I am the last person who still sends Christmas cards. My SIL, who is older, did text me yesterday and say she got mine so she is sending me one.

It's a dying thing and that's too bad. I have happy memories of seeing my mom arrange them in patterns when I was a child.

If I made anything, I would totally give that. I would much appreciate that.

My kids always notice that I did special groupings or used special wrapping for their gifts, but maybe I have fewer kids than you do, or they are just older. They didn't use to notice.

You really are not the only one who remembers. Your mom (if you still are blessed enough to have one) will never forget, just as you won't.

I've been sending Christmas cards and letters for 26 years. People always ask when my letter is coming. Yes, I'm on Facebook. Yes, people see my kids and hear my stuff. I'm still sending cards. I wish I got more. It's exciting to get a little "gift" in the mail.

I'm also baking cookies, making fudge go give to my friends, and all sorts of other corny stuff that may or may not be remembered. My niece was visiting in April. She was telling her babies about he cookies I make at Christmas and how she always looked forward to getting to my house to get one. There were days that I might have said nobody noticed the baking or wrapping or cards, but on an April evening more than a decade since my niece used to visit me as a teen - she was telling her babies about those darn cookies. So, yes, I will still do some of that stuff because it just might really matter to someone.
