  1. Okay, so for 5th grade, continue with SOTW3 and start having her create an outline incorporating UEWH in lieu of narrations from SOTW3. Toss on the timeline (a whole different bag of worms.... my house, while good sized, doesn't have a single wall conducive to hanging a long timeline ... how I miss that upstairs hallway in TX!), anyway, plus some extra reading and that would do it?

I don't want to miss the big picture as you put it. If I understand where I am going, it is easier for me to push her when I need to.

  2. I think the only way it would be okay is if you fill it out with other resources. I used it with MOH 2 this year because I knew my 3rd grader would enjoy listening to it. It seemed very simple even for him. Maybe I'm just comparing it to Mystery of History but SOTW wouldn't work for our family for the logic stage. Even as a spine it is missing so much that I'd want my logic stage student to know about.

I just posted about this topic. Hmmm... MOH might be worth considering. Would MOH3 blow a 5th grader away? She is an okay reader, at grade level, nothing stellar (she has many other wonderful gifts).

  3. My dd enters 4th and SOTW2 this fall. I plan a year in advance because of budget issues, etc. But with her shifting from grammar to logic, it brings a whole new set of questions and things to consider.

I started reading the logic stage in TWTM last night. My head is spinning. We are coming in mid-stream, not nice and neat and tidy, with a sibling in grammar (rising 2nd). TWTM talks about outlining from UEWH, supplemental sources, summaries, and having the child write down the source, opinion, etc ... we are talking googles of work here. Plus I have a small town library – I can’t just wait for dh to decide what she is interested in and have her go grab a book on that subject to explore for the week. Sure I can order books in, but they can take anywhere from 3 days to 3 months to show up.

I am trying to figure out how to step up her work for 5th without blowing her mind. I am trying to figure out what I will need because I have a budget to prepare and “submit to dhâ€.

Is SOTW3 going away and I bring in TOG3 to start hitting the logic stage (which would blow my mind, but if that is what has to be done...)? Is there a way to keep with SOTW3 and step dh into the logic stage? Is TOG inevitable?

What does 5th grade history work look like for you guys? How do I plan to progress her to the next stage?

  4. I've used 'Language Arts' as the subject, and descriptive names that tend to mimic the ones college admissions folks are accustomed to, such as British Literature, American Literature, Grammar & Composition, etc.

I think the subjects we've acquired over the years are Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, P.E., Logic, Fine Arts, Computer Science... I think that's all.

    Blessings,

    Debbie

  5. Hello.

I try not to bother you high school moms too much. But the wisdom you have collectively can't be beat. So I am going to ask for a moment of your time (again).

  6. Do you have to be challenged with ticks and such? If so, how do you protect your kids in the yard or on local nature hikes? I live in CT with an acre of woods in my front yard. It is tick season up here with the big fear being Lyme Disease (all too common in these parts). I don’t like the idea of spraying my kids with Off and Deet every day. I don’t want to treat the lawn because of fear of it slipping into the water table and contaminating our well. I can’t send kids outside to play with socks up to their knees covering their jeans every day, especially as the summer nears (simply not practical). And I can’t keep my kids in a bubble. Is there an option I am missing? I found a Lonestar tick inside my house today. I’m creeped out.

    • And a HUGE homeschooling joy has been watching my daughter go off to a university and thrive. I do the Snoopy dance (in my head) when she calls me to say that she is thankful for something we specifically studied in our homeschool. This spring she took a non-Western art history class, and her professor met with her privately. The professor was shocked to find my daughter reasonably knowledgeable about the Maya, Inca, and Aztec cultures, because she frequently encounters university students who have virtually no familiarity with them. :001_huh: That prompted the professor to ask her what school my daughter had attended, and when my daughter told her that she was homeschooled and had studied a huge unit on the Maya, Inca, and Aztec, it led the professor to ask her many questions and become genuinely impressed with my daughter's home education. Yeah, huge homeschool mom happiness right there! :hurray:

Okay, that is super duper awesome! I am doing the happy dance for and with your family! Great job!!

  8. I don't know if you would consider this kid friendly or not. But I was taught in elementary school the following trick and it works!

Brush rubber cement on both surfaces and let dry completely and by themselves.

Carefully line them up and put them together. They will never come apart without destroying both layers.

Seriously... try it on a test piece first. I think you will be super impressed.

  9. I still can't say I really understand, but your comments and explanations have been very thought provoking.

I appreciate the time everyone has taken to answer my questions.

First, I am uberly impressed with the responses. So respectful.

Jenny, I am a Christian. Raised this way. Had a few years on the fence and now devoutly follow Christ. I, too, have asked about prayer. God is all knowing. God is in control. God's will. Etc, etc, etc. It blows my mind that as humans, we think we can "change God's mind or plan" - sounds rather contradictory to me - dude, He's the boss - right?

BUT, I also believe the bible is the word of God. The bible is clear throughout... pray without ceasing. Over and over we are instructed to pray and HOW to pray. We are to give thanks, make requests, give thanks.

Hmmm... I've come to the conclusion that prayer is something I will never truly understand - amongst many, many others. But I am commanded to do so and I do. Sometimes it is nothing more than me realizing God has my back and those of the one's He loves (everyone) and the simple prayer (or not so simple prayer) of giving a matter to Him knowing there isn't a darn thing I can do about it (reduce the strength of a hurricane, decide my cancer results, bring my brother back into His arms, etc).

I try to focus my prayers on thanks, a heart of gratitude, and frankly, just verbalizing it helps ALL situations. Time after time after time I have had to face incredibly hard circumstances and by focusing on the blessings in my life, the prayers of thanks, has made the circumstances bearable.

Can we influence God? Who knows. But He tells us to pray so I do. It helps me deal with things and seems to lift me up... maybe so He can reach down and grab my hand.

I know that doesn't answer your question but it is good for me to think about this and verbalize it from time to time.

  10. As everyone reminded and convinced me last week, Kumon My First Workbooks are great too. But reading and talking to your child about the world is more than enough.

Oh... though, we do love puzzles at this house. :)
