  1. This winter I started buying more frozen vegetables in order to save money. I don't buy all of them frozen (we don't like frozen broccoli),

I don't care for most frozen broccoli either, however I found some awesome frozen broccoli at Sam's Club, right now, I've been able to get a 4 pound frozen bag for about $4.27 and it's all heads. Dh even comments how good it is. It's the only frozen broccoli that I buy now. Anyway, just thought I'd give you a heads up in case you want to try it. Most frozen broccoli is nasty because it's all stems.

  2. Thanks, Kristine! The more I read past posts about this, the more I want to buy the student pages. I think I have a teacher's guide somewhere around here... need to search for that tomorrow.

Are the extra drills and maps on the student pages?

It's so neat that your kids love this!!!

The maps are on the activity guides, but the extra drill pages are not.

    Good luck!

  3. I'll try and respond the best that I can.

    1. What do those who love this suggest buying? I've read that some use only the student worksheets. What would we be missing if we don't buy the teacher's guide?

I have a teachers guide from 1993 and in it is has

    Instructions

    Lessons 1-104

    Study Helps

Drills & Maps (Drills are printable items, for instance the first page is Divisions of the New Testament and it has Gospels, History, Letters & Prophecy with pictures and cut lines, you basically make a lift a flap with the answers underneath. Also, there are 42 pictures that you cut apart and have your children tell you what they represent, for instance picture #1 is a tree on the answer sheet it says 1.tree-Zacchaeus climbed, Luke 19:1-10; tree of life, genesis 2:8-14. Other pictures, tent, donkey, boat, star, bird, money, sword and so on...

Visuals-all of the pictures that are drawn in the activity pages and in the visuals.

    2. For those who've used the old (classical) and new worksheets-- which do you prefer and why? The new pages look so attractive, but I've heard some prefer the old ones.

    Not sure about this.

    3. How many lessons are in each guide book? Is it one guide book, one worksheet book per year? (How many lessons do you do a week.)

In the guidebook there are 104 lessons in unit 1 (they suggest 2 lessons a week, you can break the lessons up and do a little bit each day or you could even do more than two a week) I think the activity guides are broken up into three activity books for every unit covered (it's either three or four)

    4. How long do the lessons take? The lessons take as long as you want. My children love learning about the Bible and if I get through the lessons, they sometimes want to keep going. We could spend 20-30 minutes, or we could spend an hour.

    5. Can you use the old teacher guides and the new worksheet pages? (Or have they not yet developed new TG? I heard they don't quite match up.)

    I'm not sure about this.

Anyway, that's just a little bit, I guess the nice thing about the IG is that you can use it with any age, the activity sheets are broken down into different age groups and you can't copy them. I've heard of some people not writing in them and reusing them. Also for me, the extra Drills and Maps are what my children enjoy doing. I cut the pictures apart and when we first were going over them, I'd let them take turns coloring the pictures. Also, I like the visuals that have the lift a flaps, we hang them on the wall and go over them.

I'm not sure if there are samples of the IG, but I would be happy to copy a page or two and mail to give you some ideas of how it's laid out.

    HTH.

  4. Dh is painting in the office this weekend, the church does not have money to buy any carpet, but the carpet that is in there looks terrible. The section is 10X16, I posted on freecycle & craigslist, but really it would be great if I could find something today. Does anyone know if anyone like Lowe, Menards or Home Depot would donate something? There's also a Habitat Restore, but I'm not sure if they would, (even though our Pastor is one of Habitats Pastors that does house blessings and been very involved in Habitat....

    Any suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Kristine

  5. I do a lot of the same that people already suggested.

I do use up every last drop our of a container/jar.

I do wash baggies, only if they are freezer baggies & did not contain raw meat.

I pack dh's lunch for him everyday.

We buy quality when we do buy new stuff, I shop garage sales (some if I happen to see them or they are in the neighborhood), thrift stores, dh is a painter and in August we paint apartments for the local college and get all kinds of free stuff. (unopened food, furniture, lots of misc. stuff)

We don't really go on vacations except to see family. We rarely eat out (not like the so called "average" American. We order pizza about once a month & I do Pizza Hut book it with the kids, some months we don't eat out at all and some we are very busy and eat out more.

I shop sales, will do a small garden this year, I use coupons. Cook a lot from scratch. Yesterday I made a batch of refried beans from a recipe that I found off of allrecipes.com The boys love it and will eat it all week. I started frying our own tortillas for chips because it's cheaper and we like them better (this is a treat, we don't have them often)

I swap curriculum, use free stuff from the internet or buy used first then new.

  6. The Bible Study Guide. All you have to use is the appropriate student pages. They stand alone. You read the actual bible verses from your bible, then you go over each picture and do the appropriate age activity. The student pages do stand alone if you feel the bible reading would be a bit much. I guess it depends on the child. I also love that there is review and application. I can't say enough about this find.

    check it out at biblestudyguide.com

Remember all you need is the student pages and those are 5.95 each set. Each set comes with 25 lessons. I only ordered the first two sets to try it out and it has become a hit.

    Blessings!!!

We love this. I actually use the I.G., I have gotten the student pages, but for me, find the IG more helpful.

  7. As little as possible. Last year I spent $426.00 on books. I probably spend another $75-100 on co-op classes and another 50-100 on field trips.

    This year so far:

$167.00, 32 of that was for a Symphony field trip and 25 was for our co-op fee for the fall. Hopefully for the fall it will be less, I already have MFW RTR that I pieced together a year ago and I just need to buy grammar books yet and one science workbook.

  8. Well we do live in a good area of the country where things are pretty low, but we are in the bottom, dh makes about $26,000 a year. Things are tight, we don't do a lot of extra curricular things, but my kids are clothed, happy and we make do. We recently had help from my father in law and we are in a much better position than we were a year ago, but it was very humbling, we didn't ask for help, he offered and we would have been stupid to turn him down. There are times when I have to remember that God is in control and not worry about what others think.

  9. Ok, with shipping a book I ordered was $5.89, it's the wrong edition that is listed, it's a first edition, and I wanted a second edition. It's a Saxon 65 math book and not a huge deal, but from what I've read, it 2nd edition on up, the problems have () with the former chapters listed to help children. My daughter does use these in the 5/4 book. Also, I have the answer booklets for 2nd edition, which is what I ordered. I sent the seller an e-mail and told her that it really doesn't pay me to send her the book back, and she hasn't responded. I just went to my half.com account and it has file claim, contact seller or leave feedback. Should I go ahead and file a claim? Will I need to send the book back if I do? or do I just cut my losses and not leave feedback?

    Thanks,

    Kristine

  10. I am currently working on cleaning out dead/dormant poison Ivy before it gets out of control (we moved in the house in June and didn't realize about the poison ivy at the edge of our gully because we saw the house in the early spring, not a huge deal, but some work. I'm also working on digging up a few small stumps so that no one trips over them, I've done this before at our old house and it's quite the work out. I got one out yesterday and have at least one more that I know of, but possibly a few more, there are some smaller trees that I want to remove also.

This spring we want to run wire to put in ceiling fans (the house has no ceiling lights in the bedrooms or living area, but that's the only thing in the house that is wrong. Why people 30 years ago thought they wouldn't need light is beyond me. (All of the switches control an outlet for lamps.)

So what projects are you working on?
