  1. Can anyone compare logic safari with logic liftoff series?

Logic Safari 1, 2, and 3 only have the grid-type puzzles. They are for grades 2-5 (6, at most). My dd gets bored with the grid-type puzzles in this series.

In addition to grid-type puzzles, the Logic Liftoff/Orbiting series also includes other type of logic questions, including an intro to syllogisms. They are good prep for the Critical Thinking 1&2 books or CAP's Art of Argument.

  2. I'm back with my spelling book questions.  So, now I purchased the ABC's and all their tricks. It looks like a great reference book, and definitely useful.  It's not exactly what I was hoping for.

Personally I found ABCs and All Their Tricks confusing. I resold it.

Comparitively, I think How To Teach Spelling and the Logic of English Essentials (not the Uncovering book) are open-and-go resources.

  3. Does anyone know how I can find a longer sample of WWS?  I can't get the link on the Peace Hill Press site to work and the one on Rainbow Resource Center isn't very long. (well, it's long, but most of it is the table of contents)

    Thanks!

Yes, strangely the link on the WWS1 page is not working. Try the samples link at the bottom of the PHP homepage. It links to this sample of WWS1.

There is a small sample on CBD; it shows the ToC plus the first few pages of lesson 1.

  4. According to SWB's writing lectures, 8th graders should be able to prepare a 3-level outline from their reading and rewrite from that outline. From the Writing Without Fear handout:

History: Outlining sections, once per week; writing brief summaries from that outline
Science: Outline sections, write brief summaries
Reading: Half-page reports: summary, character analysis, criticism

This recent thread on the typical writing output of high schoolers may give you some idea.

Another thread about WTM writing in the middle grades.

  5. Any updates....

We're reading through the list of stories in Farrar's post that I linked above. I'm not getting as much discussion for each story as I'd like, though. Dd said she did not a couple of the stories (Zlateh, and The Lady or The Tiger!) She used to enjoy discussing when I read longer books with her in the past (Harry Potter, Charlotte's Web, Narnia, Calpurnia Tate) and I am puzzled why she isn't enjoying the short stories as much.

At this point, her studies take up so much time, we just don't have the time to start a longer chapter book. So I will keep trying - read a few more stories and hope she will warm up to them. I've downloaded older editions of the Junior Collier series and of the Journeys Through Bookland series. I will update if I have better luck with these.

  6. Is there something wrong with this?  I have a prescription for my son and it was $20 WITH insurance.  I'm wondering if there is something nasty in it.

I don't know what AllDayChemist sells, but the Retino brand of generic tretinoin is manufactured in India and is available OTC there for the equivalent of US$1.50. There is nothing "nasty" in it.

  7. Karella is also called bitter gourd.

One Indian way to cook these - cut them, scoop out and dump the seeds, boil them till partly cooked, and discard the water. That gets rid of the bitterness. Then cook them with a bit of oil and a paste of salt, chilli powder, curry powder, jaggery, and fresh grated coconut.

One Chinese way to cook these -  cut them, scoop out and dump the seeds, boil them with chopped carrots, red dates, and wolfberries. Add salt to taste. This soup uses a slighly different variety of bitter gourd. See this image; on the left is the variety cooked in India, on the right is the variety cooked in China.

  8. I've used skin creams and face masks from SkinActives.com for several years now and am very happy with them.

Also, a thin layer of Retino 0.025% cream twice a week at night, and SPF 50 PA+++ sunscreen every morning.

I have spent the past year using skin care products from Asia, all available on Amazon, with prime, and my skin has NEVER looked better.

It's interesting that you buy stuff from Asia and I buy stuff from the US. We are both contributing to global warming. :p

Please share the products you liked. Perhaps I can reduce my carbon footprint. :)
