  1. no shoes in the house here, and I make them come in via the back door so I don't have to look at dirty shoes all day. Otherwise, we have laundry baskets in the closets to hold their shoes. They are only allowed one pair at the back door. DH and I actually have a pair of flip flops/crocks at each door. I used to have a rack, a cubby, a box, but I found the shoes are too often wet (for the box) and didn't make it on the rack (annoyed me) with them lined up neatly against the wall, it's an easy correction, they dry and it's free. HTH.

  2. if they added to their article the number of children in the area that were publicly schooled and who were in the foster care system for child abuse?!?!

I have to say, I agree with someone who posted about how hsing becomes more mainstream, it's concerning b/c people who get mad about something in ps pull their kids, do little to nothing for a few months, then pop them back in school.

On the other hand, my aunt, a long time teacher said of the handful hs kids that came her way, only one of them was up to par in the 4th grade when they entered ps.

IMO, the issue is not where they're schooled, but it's all about parenting. Unfortunately, the media spins it otherwise.

  3. And I wonder, where did all that money come from? Was it simply more government bonds issued? Is that supposed to help the economy, albeit with increased government debt?

I heard we borrowed it from China....alas, more proof that we are in big trouble. Borrowing money from a country that is not our "friend," who we can't even keep in check to maintain our trade standards...."Hey, clean up your toys...umm can we borrow a few billion, buddy, so we can stimulate our economy and allow people to go buy a new, made in China tv (gotta be ready for HD, ya' know!)?" China has a growing relationship with Iran and Russia (also not really our friends).

  4. I'm wondering...where is the outrage from the parents? The article said no backlash?!?!?! I'd be all over that phone, in the office, writing an editorial, blogging, calling the news station.

I have also lost friends in high school related to drunk driving and let me tell you, that experiment is messed up. As a student, my trust would be gone and that would have broken my heart.

Added to the list of why I'm thankful to home school....

  5. for the sake of my opinion (honestly that's all it is b/c this is not my situation we're talking about) spoken nicely, you're assuming the problem is his alone. I don't think we can fairly make that assumption since it's not our situation (not placing any blame on op, just trying to remain objective). Seems like there are actually 3 parties involved here (dh, dw, dw parents)

I could see not touching a $25 present, even a $50 one...but for me...for dh and I...$500 is one woppin' gift and it could never be just mine (even though I would spend it on the family too).

Personal space can be found in many places and I think personal space is good and healthy, but if one is finding personal space somewhere and their spouse in not in agreement, well, that can be hard on a marriage.

Personally, no flames please, I don't think marriage is best served via equality. I think it is best served by compromise. If a compromise can't be reached, then I prefer to choose the path of least resistance. I think it's better for the long haul.

Just my opinion. No offense intended to OP or Kelli. Tryin' to be a peace maker.

  6.

The same argument that people use for gun control is the same when someone says that we can't home school because of one home school parent abusing a child.

Exactly what I was thinking. I believe using the mentally ill as a catalyst, like the woman in D.C., and saying we need more home schooling regulation, is the same as using Columbine to increase gun control. When someone is ill, or criminal, they'll find a way (see post on soda cans and bottles; see Japan and knives)

It's not about gun control. It's about moral decay.

  7. Just throwing out some things I have personally experienced in this situation

    1. you are really bothered when you are scolded for spending on the little things b/c you find the scolding and/or comments from dh unnecessary, but can't or haven't talked to dh about it -- you feel disrespected

    2. your spending on the little things is truly not in your budget (which upsets dh) and you are keeping this account to have some control and be able to spend however you want with what you consider "your money" --he feels disrespected

Either way, I'd say you need to talk to dh.

I would be troubled if out of the blue my dh got an account with just his name, just b/c, and a bit offended if his parents gave him, and not us, $500, also just b/c

Seems like something is a little off balance.

For the record, we have 2 accounts - business and personal -- both joint-- we both have access to all debit cards and we have no credit cards -- both have access to every utility bill, etc.

    Just my $.02

  8. My dear family and I live on a property where there are 8 apartment units. The people here are suffering; some, b/c they Won't find work; many b/c they Can't find work. They are trying to get gov't assistance and being denied or dragged in loops waiting, waiting, waiting. They have no cars, homes, food, one woman even, no electricity. We have been feeding people every day that live on the property. From what we see, down here in poverty/lower middle class land is hunger, homelessness, drug abuse, domestic violence, divorce, unwed mothers, lack of education. The local food pantries have more people coming in, less people giving, and a have lowered how much they can help.

We are struggling as it now takes $91 to fill dh's gas tank and his job requires him to drive all day from home to home. He has lost work b/c clients need to cut back. While we see in the news, how people are struggling b/c they don't have any a/c; we have it, but can't afford to use it.

We saw glimpses of this over the past decade, but now, This Is Every Day Life. (in other words, I know it has always been this way, but it is this way for a lot more people now)

No, I don't see the future of this great nation to be bright -- no matter who takes office--we are in trouble.

There is always hope, but hope without reality...my reality is not pretty... and I live in what appears to be a vibrant city in sunny FL. Looks good on the outside, but inside...not so pretty.

I see the Roman Empire too...and I don't like the looks of it.

  9. Hello. I hope you're all well and I'm wondering how on earth you have time to be here! (lol)

I was wondering what your weekly schedule looks like for TOG, on a day to day basis.

I have 2D, 1UG, 2LG to teach each week and we have yet to accomplish one week's worth of work in one week's worth of time. I'm okay with this, I'm just wondering what others are doing on what days and how much you are doing.

I use TOG as our core, so per level, I do:

    per TOG Week:

    Hist. core 1 book

    History in Depth 1 book

Sometimes, if I am sure the dc will enjoy the topic, 1 supplement

    1 Literature

    1 family activity per week

    bible

geography (lesson, then an end of wk. test for mastery)

vocab (as our only vocab and spelling, 1 lesson then test for mastery)

lapbook with the 2LG (this serves as their spelling, geo, art, review)

timeline (we just add something the littles color to a wall timeline)

people (we keep note cards of the famous people)

end of unit discussion (we start together, then move on up and dismiss where appropriate)

    Writing Aids as directed

finally, I choose one read aloud per unit that we read during family quiet times, probably 3-4 days a week, say one chapter.

So, what I am looking for is your Master Schedule that tells which "subjects," on which days, and for how much time.

Thank you so much for sharing the details of your day with me. I am trying to feel a bit more organized and connected throughout my week and I am hoping to see some beautiful ideas.

    Thanks,

    Tina :)

  10. Ladies,

We did a semester of Latin from the Roots Up, then switched to the Bridge to the Latin Rd. to Grammar. We have enjoyed this, and although we don't need the grammar (we use Rod & Staff), it was nice to have review and made us feel so smart b/c it was easy!

I understand the next step in the program, The Latin Road To English Grammar is much meatier in Latin. I am leaning there, but would really like opinions on Latin Road vs. Prima Latina vs. Latin Christiana. The reason? LRTEG is pricey and I want to be able to justify the expense. Has anyone used any and all of these. Please help me with pros and cons.

Thank you so much for your help. If I am slow to respond, please forgive me. I'm heading out after this post.

    Thank you.

    Tina

  11. Hi. I know it's been ages since I've been here, just no time w. all 5dc in school, but this is still a place I value for wisdom.

After 2 years of serious pain and a few years before that of off and on troubles, I am considering cts surgery and would like your opinions, both good and bad experiences. I have worn braces, limit my time on activities that annoy, rest, ice, and all every home methods possible. It has been confirmed I have nerve damage and to top it off, my grip is getting bad this year. I have the dropsies. I have not made up my mind.

Your opinions are greatly appreciated. I will check the board throughout the day, but don't think I'll be able to answer any questions right away, so sorry if I appear rude, just busy doing school.

Thanks for all responses in advance, just in case :)

  12. Everything they do gets displayed for a week. Then, if it is on paper, it gets put into a binder in a page protector. If it is 3D in any way, we take a photo and print out a page and write what it is, why they did it and any other info they want to include and then I get to throw it out. That way they know I think everything they do is wonderful enough to save but I don't end up with stuff everywhere.

I use the fridge when possible, sometimes tape to sliding doors or windows, hand from ceilings. The big stuff falls under the week rule above

  13. I've tried a few other programs and what I found was they were either boring and/or lacked teacher instruction. I found Writing Aids this year by Marcia Somerville and have found it to be Nicely done for me and also introduces writing from so many angles. It covers more than just how to write an informative paper, but also encourages using literary devices to build writing. You can find it on the Tapestry of Grace Website.

It comes with the book and a CD to print out a variety of tools. I find it well worth the $50, and I am a cheap-o about spending money :)

    Take care,

  14. try homeschoolshare.com (maybe .org, I forget) but it's great. The index section has wonderful info, too.

to purchase I like knowledgeboxcentral they make some great stand alone unit study lap books and also have some for TOG and Apologia Sciences.

  15. Every now and then, I buy one or two of the 12 x 12 drawers, intended for scrapbooking. They will stack nicely in a non-toddler access room, or fit on a shelf. They move nicely so when we're working on something needing the paper, we can bring it to the table and return it easily. I have them filed by color, size, or prints, label the outside of the drawer w/ a sharpie (it comes off nicely with polish remover).

  16. We love lap booking and when I only had a few in school, we just did it all on our own. This year, however, I have 5 in school and I have found CD-Roms to be so very worth it. They are a time saver and if I don't love what is in them, I can still create my own, but for the time savings, the idea spring board and the ability to print out enough for all 5 children, I find them worth it. Just for measure, I have Never bought anything just in the interest in of making my life easy. I tend to make everything to save money, time just doesn't allow at this point, so the $$ is well spent.

  17. Since I use the library for most every book, I find it very easy to search out the books using http://www.worldcat.org They even provide the book description so I get a good idea of the content. Worldcat saves me time b/c I can see if a book is at my local library and I have found it to be more accurate than my library's search engine. Also, it helps me to sit down and quickly go down the list provided. I write little notes on the list so the next time around I know where I got the book. This really helps b/c I have to use UG, LG, and Dialectic.

Also, I have found that many of the books are spread out over multiple weeks. For example, you may only need to read 20 pages from a book, then the next week 20 more, etc. So, initially it looks like a ton of reading, but it's really spaced nicely.

Just having the list available has saved me SO much time. Coupled with Worldcat.org, it is wonderful.

  18. For about 3 years we only had one car and dh worked full time away from home. It is totally doable. You just have to plan when to do things like shopping, errands and appointments. Even without public transportation, with a little patience it can be done. If it means no debt for you....go for it! It is amazing the money you can save without a car payment. We just made sure we kept each other up to date with our schedule. I really think the storage insurance try is a great option. Very wise.

    Take care,

  19. Each year I add a new subject, or another child to our school day, I think, how am I going to do this? There aren't enough hours in the day. Am I doing too much? Am I stretching too thin? etc., etc., etc.

You know what I find each time? After a few months of adjustment (honestly sometimes 5 or 6 months), I always end up working it out. I may not be Supermom and my grand plans may not always work out, but in the end, we do all right.

All that to encourage you, you never know until you try. With patience, encouragement, support and diligent effort, you are most likely capable of more than you think. When I started this journey, I regularly called my dh crying telling him I couldn't do it. It's been 9 years and we're doing just fine.

Give it a shot. If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work, but at least you can't look back with regrets b/c you didn't try.

    Wishing you well.
