I know this is an old thread, but it is still super helpful to find and I'm glad people continued to contribute. I searched this topic because I just had this experience and wanted to see what if anyone else experienced pain bc I heard collectively that it wasn't painful and didn't know what the heck was going on with me.

I am answering because I read and heard from friends ;with a dif experience) that it was not painful or similar to cramps and then I experienced it and mine was extremely painful- I nearly passed out bw screaming. It sucked- but did not last long. I am sharing bc I would have asked for anesthesia or other care had I known this level of pain was a possibility.
