  1. I am glad to hear this isn't totally uncommon. Three things.

First, my ds is very good at working through the chapters and learning the concepts on his own, but getting 10 or 11 wrong makes him think that he is bad at math. I will have to encourage him, because honestly we have been disappointed in his work too. Maybe we all need an attitude adjustment and focus on what is going well instead of dwelling on the carelessness. It does really bother me that he will get low test grades too, but come home from the test and tell us how easy everything was. So thanks for the change in perspective.

Second, I love the idea of him correcting his work on his own. I just dread correcting his work and then having to go back to see what he really missed, because he didn't understand and what was a careless mistake. He is very honest and would tell us where he is having trouble. I like how it puts the responsibility on him. Great idea.

Third, I usually just let him correct the careless part of the problem, but maybe if I made him do the entire problem over again, it would motivate him to try harder to get it right the first time.

    Thanks everyone!

"I've also noticed that it helps to have my dd do the corrections herself rather than working through it with me. . . a way of getting extra attention YKWIM? Anyway, it seems to be less of a problem every year and all the reminding pays off because she has some very good math habits now!"

  2. We do mechanical pencils too, but the first time I bought the big huge cheap pack, but once the erasers are gone they aren't as useful. Trying to keep track of erasers and pencils is too much.:( This time I bought mechanicals that have a twist up eraser that I can replace when it runs out. Every room in our house has a place for pens and pencils, even the bathrooms! That way if I find one wandering it goes in the pencil holder or drawer. That helps.

  3. I guess it makes me feel a little better to know someone else feels the same way. I sometimes think of my son as the absent minded professor. My husband who is very intelligent is a bit like this too, but he is very detailed in careful with math problems. Maybe it will come with age. I hope someone has a great idea too!

If he really didn't understand a problem I go over that chapter with him and then he redoes all the practice problems from it. If that doesn't help my husband goes over it with him until he "gets it".

  4. The Charlotte Mason Primer By Cindy Rushton is my favorite for the nitty gritty and the one I loan out if someone is interested. I don't know if that was one you have, but it is really short and good about going into the details of how.

I second the the website Higher Up and Further In. A real gem!

  5. My ds just completed 7/6, but makes careless mistakes on lessons and tests. Every lesson he misses between 5-10 problems. He has always been this way. Every once in a while he will miss one he really doesn't understand, but for the most part they are simple mistakes that when he goes back over them corrects. Any ideas?

I am not sure if we should let him go into 8/7 or keep doing lessons in 7/6 until he brings his scores up.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

    TIA

  6. There was so much good advice, I feel like this isn't needed, but our home has turned around so much lately that I had to share.

I make a list on the weekend of all I want them to get done during the week and then hand it to them on Sunday night. Whatever they don't finish by Friday they have to do early Sat morning. This has worked tremendously. They work into the evening if they need to. Before they felt like they were done by 1pm, whether they were done or not.

It turns it into their responsibility and not mine. complete attitude change and much more productive. It helps that they are 8 and 11.

  7. I took heavy duty antibiotics for 3 yrs and didn't have any problems, unless, I stopped my probiotics. I took Intestinal Care by Ethical Nutrients in powder form. It has acidophilus and bifidus and tastes sweet mixed with water. We call it sweet water here at our home. Have to take it at least 2 hours away from the antibiotics. I always took mine before bed.

    Hope he feels better soon.

  8. He also thinks it's meant to diminish older women's "power" - by telling them they're past the point of beauty that has a "sexual" connotation, (Long, swinging hair) and have to settle for cuts that label them as past their prime.

Unfortunately, when women get older, some like men lose their hair and have to wear it short and curled to hide their lack of hair. If you have long thick beautiful hair, you go for it girl.

My husband likes it long and natural, short and natural, and natural. He likes all the different women I have been over the years and thinks it is fun to see how I change in age and in fashion. I love him. :o
