  1. Here are a few my dds ages 13 and 14 have recently enjoyed that I can recall offhand:

    Uglies (series)
    The Ability
    The Selection (series)
    A Great and Terrible Beauty
I'd Tell you I Love You But I'd Have to Kill You (series)

None of these are great literary works, but just fun independent reading. My older Dd just read The Fault in Our Stars as well and loved it.

  2. From the stories about this case, it sounds as if the girl was in the window seat and the perpetrator was in the middle seat.   Does this mean there was an empty aisle seat, I wonder?

Just thinking out loud here, but it seems to me that it might be a good idea to generally seat UMs in aisle seats, so there is a better chance of being seen and observed by those around them, including flight attendants.  Being hidden in a window seat with a larger adult blocking the view might not be the best place to seat them.  I always advise my daughters to take aisle seats, or I personally buy them an aisle seat if they fly as UMs, but only because I'd rather have it be easier for them to get in and out of their seat to go to the restroom.  This case gives me an additional reason to put them in an aisle seat, I think.

  3. Here is what American says they will do for that $150 for unaccompanied minors:

        Link to AA site.

Unless I missed something, there is nothing about monitoring the child during the flight.

I'm sure that poor girl will be affected by this for a long time.  Still I don't see how American can be held liable for it.

Not sure.  However, I'm guessing that there is some express or implied duty of care here, particularly in light of the fact they charge $300 round trip.  It will be interesting to see how the case unfolds, or if it settles out of court.

  4. Southwest does not monitor YTs during travel. Accordingly, each YT must have sufficient maturity and capability to request assistance from a Southwest Employee if needed and the means to contact a parent/guardian if there is a travel disruption.

Bingo.  That is what I would think.  Although, when DD was smaller they did pay her a lot of attention and check on her throughout the flight.  But I would not expect her to need to be "monitored" or supervised.

However, our experience has been that Southwest did not charge an extra fee for a 13 year old unaccompanied minor, but American did.  Thus, the Southwest policy is what it is.  I can say that when my dd traveled as an unaccompanied minor on American, she felt like she was treated like royalty by the flight attendants.  The attendants on Southwest didn't give her a second look.  (But again, there was no extra fee on Southwest.)

  5. Just a follow up on this topic -- we just received the bikini we ordered from VS Pink in the mail.  Whew -- it is adorable and appropriate.  Who would have thought that a VS brand bikini would meet mom's approval?  DD got this top with these bottoms.  She loves it because it she feels trendy, and I'm happy because there is nothing peeking out or looking in danger of falling out.  Both the top and the bottoms have full coverage.  The price was great, too.

Thanks to all who gave us tips -- I will keep all in mind for the future!  Just thought I'd pass these styles along to anyone interested in what we felt was an age appropriate bikini for a young teen at a nice price point.

  6. My dds each got a cheap prepaid dumbphone for their 12th birthdays, because their dance schedules were hectic and I felt better knowing they could contact me anytime they wanted.   They now have hand-me-down iphones without cellular service (wifi only), but with my parental controls that limit the internet and require my approval for any app downloads.  They each got one around age 13.  My older dd will be getting cellular service for hers in the next month or two, and she will be 14.  I intend to keep parental controls on the phone, though.

For a 15 yo ds, I would be inclined to be ok with allowing a smartphone, but with the caveat that it might be monitored occasionally by you (not invasively).

  7. No, I don't have a favorite.  My dds are very different personalities and they can each drive me bonkers sometimes, but I don't favor one over the other..  I strongly dislike the idea of favorites.  My older dd was my mother's "favorite" out of all her grandchildren, to the point where she put a reference to my older dd on her license plate, and I have a very visceral reaction to the idea of favorites because of that.

  8. Hmm -- I'd never heard of Jolyn before!  The bottoms are a little more skimpy than I'd like, though.  Cute styles!

I just ordered some suits from Old Navy and actually a couple from Justice that looked nice, and not too babyish, but not sure if they will fit.  (Why do girls' swimsuit bottoms run so big???  Then, in womens, they are teeny, lol.)  Giving them a shot, along with the ones from Target and Pink.  We'll see what works and I'll return the rest.

    Thanks all.

  9. I know lots of others already said it, but... lands End!

Just got dd a new tankini, girls 16 & she wears a ladies S in other clothes. It was on clearance for under $20 but not much left in her size for this summer.

Next year, she'll need to move up to ladies, as the bust area in girls will not fit next year. Sigh.

So, Land's end runs large for girls?  Good to know -- I may go ahead and purchase the size 14 bikini on sale right now for my 13 year old....Thx!

  10. Old Navy has some sporty suits with good coverage.

I think that wherever you shop you need to just dig in and look through every suit... Just because the teeny bikini is featured on the mannequin doesn't mean that there isn't a boy shorts bottom and high necked tankini in the racks behind it.

Maybe that's our problem.  We only physically went into Target and Hollister and couldn't find anything decent.  At Target, there was nothing in their size (xs) because all seemed sold out, and Hollister was sold out of fuller coverage bottoms.

We decided to shop online to get a feel for what was out there and have been frustrated with the options offered.  We may need to just bite the bullet and physically go into stores to dig through the inventory...

  11. Thanks again, all!

MamaKelly -- you hit the nail on the head.  The problem we've been having is finding a balance between cute/youthful and frumpy/grandma-ish. I'm definitely fine with 2 piece bikinis for them, but the majority of suit bottoms for juniors these days seem to be "cheeky", where the goal is to bare the cheeks  or "hipster", where they come down so low in the back, one would have to be careful not to flash a crack :bored: .   We do like the new high waisted style, but I think we are shopping too late in the season because many seem to have sold out earlier (at least in our price range...Dillards has some darling ones for $$$.)

Adding Athleta, Old Navy to our search....

eta:  I wish I was brave enough to sew swimsuits.  I can sew, but I lack talent sewing stretch fabrics, unfortunately....

  12. I have 2 young teen dds -- one is newly 13 and one is 14.5.  This year, I'm sad to discover, they have both outgrown the girls' swimsuits section at Target, and the other usual suspects such as Abercrombie Kids.  We've moved up to the juniors/women's swimsuits section and I'm really frustrated.  Unless we are looking at suits for much older ladies, there is a scarcity of coverage, especially in the bottom area.  It doesn't matter where I look, I'm having a difficult time finding cute, age appropriate 2 piece swimsuits for 13/14 year olds.

Where do you shop?  (And also, where are there swimsuits that don't break the bank?)   My dds do have one piece suits for regular swimming, because they are swimmers.  But for fun 2-piece suits they can wear to the beach with their girlfriends, I'm at a loss.  I've ordered some from Hollister, which I had to take back today. Now, I've ordered one from Target womens and one from Pink that looked like the bottoms had sufficient coverage, but I will only be able to tell once I get them.

Help!  Please give me ideas of where to look!

  13. Girl Scouts is secular. Just throwing that out there in case you were thrown by the GS promise.

I'm not sure if this was specific to our troop, or not, but we quit our Daisy troop when it became clear the troop leaders were pressuring my daughter to express her belief in some kind of God, any God.  When my daughter told the leader she was Buddhist, the leader said she could profess her belief in Buddha (within the Girl Scout promise).  Um, just no.  When I talked to the leader, she said the Girl Scouts were not Christian, but still expected the girls to believe in some sort of God.

Based on our experience, I would not characterize the Girl Scouts as secular.  YMMV.

  14. Where would you get an iPhone that will work on TracPhone? TracPhone works well for DD11's needs, and in our area, they use T-mobile towers, which are quite reliable,  but she would really like to get an iPhone and is saving up for one.

My dds have iphones that have been handed down to them by family members.  One is an AT&T phone and one is a Verizon phone.  From what I understand, you can use either type with tracfone, and you just need to buy a sim card from them to get started.  Here's a link to the Tracfone page that gives more details.

eta:  Here is another link that might be helpful.

  15. We rarely go out to the movies, but my dds have been looking forward to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, as well as the new Beauty and the Beast.  Unfortunately, the first won't be released until November and the second won't be released until 2017.   :glare:   I agree that the pickings seem very slim this summer.  Nothing really to convince me I shouldn't wait for the dvd.

  16. OP, is there a particular reason you are only considering the 4th edition of Saxon?  Personally, I wouldn't use Saxon unless I was using the earlier editions.  The earlier editions contain Saxon math as it was originally intended to be taught -- in an integrated manner.  The 4th edition was published by Houghton Mifflin in an effort to create textbooks to sell widely in the public school market -- it mostly cuts and pastes the formerly integrated topics into separate books, and adds a bunch of stuff.   I've not heard great things about the 4th edition from either math reviewers or homeschool parents who try to use the books.

eta:  So, in sum, if you are not interested in using an integrated math program, it's probably best to go with something other than Saxon altogether, rather than to consider the 4th edition.
