  1. These books have been helpful to me. I think if I actually did some writing while reading through them, my writing would improve! As it is they are helping me to learn more about the process and do a better job of helping my children.

Writing to the Point by Kerrigan

The Lively Art of Writing by Payne

Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student by Corbett

    Lost Tools of Writing

Classical Writing series and message boards

Lost Tools of Writing(I don't have the newest edition) explained some of the things(especially invention) from Classical Rhetoric in a incremental easier-to-apply way.

The first two books gave me a quick big picture view of writing an essay, but I keep coming back to needing the invention skills explained in LTOW. Classical Rhetoric also gave a big picture view but not quickly.

I wish I had done what you are doing-starting self education before it is needed!

  2. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I can't see the benefit vs. drawbacks of a single sink. Maybe I just do dishes wrong LOL. We fill one side of the sink with soapy water and one child washes and another rinses. This also leaves the side with the garbage disposal available so that someone could rinse dishes and put them in the dishwasher while someone else washes. We run the dishwasher once a day but with 9 of us that just takes care of plates/cups/silverwear. We hand wash pots/pans/tupperwear etc everyday.

If you just have one sink where do you wash/rinse?

  3. I would like to get a new kitchen faucet and maybe a new sink as well. At the least the sink needs to be reinstalled.

I have no idea where to start on choosing something new.

What do you like about your kitchen faucet and/or sink?

I know I want a sink with 2 sides. I want a sprayer of some kind. I think I want a single handle. Beyond that is a faucet a faucet a faucet? Or is there something wonderful about one over another?

    Thanks,

  4. Thanks Cynde and ericsmom!

My son did Conceptual Physics in 8th and Apologia Bio and Chem in 9th/10th. He likes science but he isn't sure he wants to do a total of 3 years of physics(counting 8th). I'd like a strong Physics program but I'm sure I won't have much time to devote to it. So I was trying to figure out if I would need both Apologia books to equal the Giancoli text in rigor/coverage. It sounds like he could easily finish Apologia Physics in less than one year, but both in one sounds pretty tough.

  5. I'm debating between Giancoli or trying to use Apologia Physics and advanced Physics in one year.

    2 questions

1 - Is using Apologia Physics and Advanced in one year a possiblity? Or even 3 semesters?

2- I'm concerned that Giancoli would not be as self teaching and would require a lot of prep on my part. I did take 13 hours of physics in college but that was 20 years ago. With a baby due this summer a lot of prep work from me isn't going to happen. Any comments?

This is for my son that will be a junior and likes math and science and in 8th grade went through the Conceptual Physics book.

    Thanks in advance,

    Kendall

  6. This is what we are doing/did this year in 8th

continued NEM 1(first half) started NEM 2(1st half)

Rod and Staff 8 and Sentence Composing for Middle School

    Runkle Geography(semester 1)

Semester 2 instead of science - split time between drawing and practical home maintenance and repair

    Traditional Logic II

    Henle II

    Hist/Lit Middle Ages time period

  7. Yes, you could go to Henle and it does give the bigger picture. But it wouldn't hurt to do as others have suggested and go quickly through LCI and II, focusing on the forms and some on the vocabulary and pick and choose from the worksheets and/or do them aloud.

My 3rd son did LCI and II in 3rd/4th grade and is doing Henle I this year in 5th grade. We are planning to take 3 years to complete it. His older brothers did LCI only(and not too thoroughly) and started Henle in 6th/8th.
