  1. I planted a Hydrangea Incrediball last year. It struggled all summer with brown, burnt leaves. I gave it plenty of water and amended the soil. The mistake I made was that I pruned it too early, due to the dead leaves all around. Anyways, this year I only see growth on one side of the plant and the rest of the wood is bare. Any idea what is going on or recommendations on what I should do moving forward? Thank you!
  2. Has anyone purchased books from this site? I am looking to purchase Geometry: A Guided Inquiry here: https://books.kolbe.org/products/geometry-a-guided-inquiry-student-textbook It is cheaper than any used copy I can find but want to be sure this is a legitimate site. Thank you!
  3. This is amazing! Thank you! You've convinced me to start with PS.
  4. Thank you. This is very helpful! I think I will try the CWP as a 1 page per day but skip the really challenging ones for now.
  5. Another quick question - is the CWP series, in your opinion (especially the challenging problems in the second half of each chapter) a necessity for algebra or are these more for accelerated students who like a challenge?
  6. I use Singapore math with my ds. We are currently in 4B, and I want to add a supplementary book or two as we are finding the decimals pretty easy (we currently use the textbook and workbook and add in mental math and math facts). I bought a lot of books used and now I have CWP 3, IP 3A and 3B, and the Process Skills books 3 & 4 (I want to use the word problem books a year behind). I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed at how much material there is and don't really know which book to use. I don't consider my ds gifted, but he isn't behind either. My goal is for him to use SIngapore through 6B and be ready for Foerster Algebra. I am wondering what supplemental books would be best to ensure a smooth transition to algebra. I like the idea of using these books a year behind to help review the skills he learned from last year. So, the goal is not necessary to provide him with extra challenge - he hates that. I just want him to be ready for algebra in a couple of years. We tried the CWP 3 book - the first set of problems are easy for him but the challenging set frustrated him even as I explained the bars models. What would you suggest? Would you start at the beginning of the book and go through it or select topics to focus on? Thank you!
  7. Can anyone tell me the main differences between the classic and third edition of Foersters Algebra 1 classic edition and 3rd edition? Also, will the same solutions manual work for both? TY!
  8. Also, what level of Writing Strands would you suggest for paragraphing? Thank you!
  9. Could you give me an idea of how Treasured Conversations tackled the paragraph? I'm interested.
  10. What does writing look like in 3rd/4th grade? I own IEW Fables, Myths, and Fairytales and I don't really like it. I also own a couple of other books that teach the basic paragraph. We started but it just feels so boring writing paragraphs like: "Pizza is my favorite food. I like to eat my pizza with pepperoni. I especially like to make home-made pizza..... " We have been using MCT Grammar Island and will continue with that, although that doesn't feel like writing. We also do 3 sentences of narration 3-4 times per week. I want to do more and feel my kids could easily take more but I don't want writing to be boring. Any ideas of an easy to implement program that teaches how to structure a paragraph that is fairly engaging? I want something more than just Topic Sentence, Detail 1, Detail 2, Detail 3, Concluding Sentence. Thanks!
  11. I've tried textbooks and they haven't worked for us. I speak Spanish so it should be easy for me to teach it to my dc but it isn't. I think the main issue is that we have so much on our plates that learning Spanish has always been pushed to the side. I am wondering how some of you have more naturally incorporated a second language into your day. Do you tackle vocabulary first? Like start with colors and numbers and food? Or do you start with essential phrases and then add in vocabulary weekly? Any ideas are appreciated!
  12. Looking for a beginning guitar for a 9-10 year old. I don't want something that he will grow out of in a year but also don't want something too big. I'm looking for decent quality but also not super expensive. Thanks!
  13. I am looking at AOPS books and trying to sequence them. I see the obvious Pre-algebra, Introduction to Algebra, Introduction to Geometry, Intermediate Algebra ... Where do Introduction to Counting and Probability and Introduction to Number Theory fit in? Are these outside of the traditional math sequence? Are these optional? Does each book take about a year? Thanks.
  14. Any reason specifically you skipped 6A & B and went to AoPS Prealgebra? Just curious.
  15. I love Singapore as well. Can I ask, what do you use after Singapore? Do you go through 6b? What do you use for algebra?
  16. I own the Challenging Word Problems book and will definitely purchase the Process Skills one. Thanks!
  17. My DS is currently in Primary Mathematics 4A. I plan on continuing with Singapore through books 6A & B. I have heard that students who finish books 6 are ready for algebra. If we take this path, do you recommend any supplements along the way to prepare for algebra? I own Hands on Equations and some of the Zaccaro books, although I have not been good about working two math curriculums at once. I have not used either yet. Any suggestions on getting ready for algebra would be greatly appreciated! Laura
  18. Love this list! We LOVED the Who Would Win series. I read these aloud, but I might give them to him to try independently.
  19. I never thought of picture books. Great idea.
