We started with Abeka K-5 math, we had a family crisis, Abeka book fair was here & it was all I could do at the time.
Now, I'm questioning whether I should continue. She's loving it. I'm not a 'good' homeschool mom. It has to be very user friendly!! We've used saxon with other kids, but not in first grade.
Idiot proof for parents, that's what I need!! We like workbook style.
Advice anyone?

We LOVE our SCWT!! Would get another in a heart beat...he doesn't have a dominant bone in his body :)

We're in Montana & nothing yet.

I certainly appreciate everyone taking the time to comment. Your comments gave me the right questions to ask, to get the whole story from ds.
Another mom & I had been considering some AP classes for our current 10th graders & this has given me good perspective. My reasons had been too narrow.

There was more to the story...it's the med school he's hoping to go to that won't accept the AP credits, as MeaganS (above) mentioned.
And, I do faintly remember seeing posts warning people about med school requirements, so many 'senior year' things going on at the time, it didn't click what they were saying.

He was told they are 'redundant' credits. He's not the best verbal communicator & he's tired after & a bit frustrated. Do you think that means its tied to the pre-med major?
The advisor he met with today is the dean of the honors college, who apparently advises all pre-med honors kids. Would you get involved, or just let him handle it?

One course is mandatory first semester. He met with his specific advisor today, and was told that's just the way it is for him this semester.
Good advice on the tutors; I'd forgotten those things about college. College was so long ago & he's our first. Plus, so much seems to have changed.

He went to orientation that last 2 days.
Certain 'required' courses, (apparently a section of chemistry lots of students must take & an honors course his scholarship requires) conflict with the calculus & German classes he was hoping to take.
He's a bit concerned about taking them spring semester with so much time off.
I cried my way to the car after the parents meeting. So glad he wasn't with me. I remember so vividly taking the child to KINDERGARTEN...how did this happen???

DD got home from college orientation today. He said his AP Bio & Chem were basically worthless. Obviously the knowledge is not wasted, but we could have saved the child some stress & saved some $$.
He's in a pre-med major. We were told by an advisor (prior to the chem test) they would at least count as elective credits. Today, he was told they do nothing.
Not sure how we could have prevented this, and I suppose if he changes majors the value of those classes could change.
Just thought I'd pass this along in case it will help anyone else!

Good luck with your move. It's a beautiful place to live!!

It sure seems like it. We've been homeschooling 3 years now. Our co-op just moved from a mile from our house...to just about the farthest point across town.

We're Missoula County...south of Flathead County.

We're in Montana also...along with a couple of other homeschooling families right in our neighborhood!!
-
Has anyone used this...who could give some pros/cons?
-
I'm curious the answer to this also. Would love to hear from someone who has used the program!

I don't think this is a very popular one...but my dd has been very happy with PowerGlide German, the high school level.

Tiders are determined by a blood test. We adopted 2 children; the blood test was how the dr. determined what vaccines they needed & what they'd been exposed to.
Just an FYI, we were told to get ours checked as well, to see if our vaccines were effective. Certain diseases (Hep B, etc) are becoming more prevalent world-wide, increasing the necessity of the vaccines.
So sorry for your frustration. We have a daughter who reacted to the chicken pox vaccine, only the doctor wouldn't believe me. Took her BACK in after the 2nd dose, and, the on call pediatrician, told me, it was the ONLY case of a child reacting to that particular vaccine he'd ever seen...and he'd have blown me off too. Stick to your guts!!

THANK YOU!!!

Are the writing/grammar high school books consumable?
-
Oh, good point. She needs to be able to read it. I want her to be able to WRITE it too. Can I just say, this child fights me on everything, and maybe I was just looking for an excuse to NOT have to fight her on this also.
We'll keep marching forward...in cursive!

We have 3 adopted children. We were introduced to a lovely lady in her 30's, also black, adopted into a white family as a baby. We had always called dd's skin 'beautiful brown skin.'
The lady we met, said, don't do that. Call it black. No explanation. She lives in an area where there is a very high % of 'minorities.' We live in a area with hardly any & just didn't know. I appreciated her candor.

Our state requires a year...was looking at Alpha/Omega, just the only one I found so far. Anyone have other recommendations?

For college bound, can opener?
Abeka math?
in K-8 Curriculum Board

Thanks for all the responses. 'All' the homeschoolers I know around me, use Saxon, Miquon, etc...NO ONE uses Abeka, and that gave me pause. We will continue. She's nearly finished the K5 book, and I think we'll order the 1st grade & keep moving forward this school year. Just wanted some second opinions to give me confidence to move forward!
