  1. Since my daughter became vegan, we've had to be creative with bread. Most tortillas are vegan as is pita bread. We've replaced regular store bought bread with these and some breads from other cultures like naan bread and other flat breads.

In the freezer section, you may find some good whole grain vegan breads. Ezekiel, Dave's and several others are vegan. And healthy good.
  2. This is the second post where you've seemed to imply that your WOE is right and others are wrong. Which kind of goes to the point I was making in my first post.

You do realize that many, many people (including me) thrive by making whole grains--things like pasta, bread and rice--staples of their diet? That untold generations of people all across the world have not only survived but thrived on diets based on those foods?

I repeat (or re-state): Demonizing foods and food groups is nothing but a backhanded way of trying to laud or legitimize your (generic) own way of eating. And I think to a certain extent it's wishful thinking ("I've got it figured out, so if I eat this way that I have decided is the right way I won't get sick or die"). It's detrimental to the greater goal of getting people to take steps toward improving their overall diet.

    This.

  3. I personally think focus on overall health rather than weight in isolation would help a lot of people. In the lower ranges of overweight there's not a lot of proof that it drastically increases mortality anyway.

Focus on stuff that helps people have access to fresh food and adequate time to sleep and exercise. Stop trying to produce huge volumes of food for minimum cost and diminishing quality.

One tour we went to that dealt with farming the guide stated that the grain produced from an acre (I think) had increased from 12 bags to around 100 in the last 100 years. It's hard to see how that could be sustainable long term though of course we have a growing population to feed.

Most grain goes to feed farmed animals. Cutting down on the huge amount of meat and dairy that Americans consume would help the country's health tremendously.

One way to do this is to stop the ridiculous tax subsidies to these meat and dairy farm corporations. The slaughter of half a million perfectly healthy US dairy cows a few years back so that prices could be "stabilised" is a prime example. And the milk in schools. Let the prices reflect the true cost of production. More subsidies to growers of healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, pulses ,grains.

  4. I've had too many medical personnel tell me: it's not a fever unless it's over 101. I very rarely run temps, for me to run any temp is a huge deal. I was hospitalized with pneumonia. my temp was 100.9.

I have one who runs a temp at the slightest provocation. for her, 102 is "normal" when she's sick. and another who is utterly miserable at 100.

so - what does this kid usually do for temps? how does she usually respond to viri?

has she had flu before? what were her symptoms like? I *always* get chills with flu. always. (the first time I had chills not associated with flu - was mastitis). didn't have them with pneumonia, did have them with the last kidney infection.

tbh: - if you're this concerned, - a nurse help line will tell you to come in.

100.4 and above is generally considered a possible infection. Some viruses have low-grade temperatures.
  5. Dd and I spent the weekend at an audition (college music audition). I was mildly sick, which started the week before. Saturday night dd said her throat hurt. We drove home Sunday and she went to bed right away (so, sore throat, fatigue, and a slight cough and nasal symptoms). She stayed home today with a fever of 99.6 this am and 100 this afternoon.

So...flu? Maybe B? Virus of some sort?

Wwyd as far as going to the dr tomorrow?

Sounds like mono. But could be a bunch of different things. If she feels as if she's been hit by a truck, it's probably flu.
  6. For some reason I pictured the doctor visits happening at the same building as the gymnastics practice, where they would be wearing leotards. I never gave it much thought. I have no idea where he saw them or if they were coming from/going to practice.

Either way, no excuse, of course.

He saw some of them for "treatments" in the basement of his home.

  7. McDougall's diet is called the Starch Solution and has reversed heart disease in his patients. It was originally formulated for cardiac patients. Doing it gluten free is not, from my understanding, recommended.

We've been vegan for years, and eat very little added oils. When we first went vegan this was not the case. For our fats we use tahini, nuts and but butters, seeds, avocado, etc. Our salad dressings are oil-free.

  8. I have heard this mentioned on the boards a few times.

So here is my current diet...

I am vegan and gluten-free for the exception of eggs that are in a gluten free baked good and an occasional piece of fish. The fish mainly comes into play when I am eating out or there is a special occasion and I can't find anything that is gluten free and also vegan and fish is available. I love veggies so being vegan is not that difficult for me.

This morning for breakfast I made a salad with chickpeas, kale, onions, tomatoes, and yellow bell pepper. I tossed it with some fresh squeezed lime juice, a little italian herbs, and just a small drizzle of EVOO. I had this and a small gluten free roll (leftover from yesterday) with a tiny bit of earth balance, soy free "butter". I also had coffee with Silk creamer.

If I understand the McDougall diet correctly, I would have had to ditch the butter, the olive oil, and the coffee. Is that right?

I am just not sure I am up for that [emoji38] It is hard enough being gluten free and vegan.

I have been looking at the McDougall info though and I can see that people are passionate about it.

So, convince me. Why would I need it over what I do now? :D

Does gluten bother your health? It's far easier to do vegan with grains. You're not leaving yourself much to eat if you do McDougall gluten-free.

    (I'm vegan)

  9. I did not say that. What I was replying to was her implication that in the 80s there were only male bosses and women were secretaries and had to get coffee, etc. That was not my experience.

I'm glad that wasn't true in your government and other secretarial positions.
  10. that is not entirely true. I was working in the 80s until 87 when my youngest way born. I had 5 different office type jobs beginning when I was 16. Only one was a male boss... all were managers or administrators. I never got coffee for anyone. I worked in the gov't and there were a lot of female mangers/bosses/administrators.

Are you talking about the 60's and early 70s??

I'm glad you had a good experience.
  11. I’m very sorry to hear about the harassment you and other women in your company endured, and I’m not saying it was an uncommon occurrence, but there are many women who did not experience sexual harassment during the 1980s.

Well of course every single woman in the '80s was not harassed by every single man! But it was not an uncommon occurrence, not particularly illegal or even frowned upon in society. And there were certainly a lot of female college graduates then, but let's not pretend the power differential between men and women in the workforce was equal. And lets not pretend everyone is or was a lawyer, engineer, doctor. What kind of privilege is that kind of talk coming from? Women that were harassed then and didn't speak up in that atmosphere do not deserve shaming now.

Women wore those ridiculous shoulder pads, big hair, and ties in the 80s for a reason, unconscious though it may have been. Like in nature, make yourself look bigger to deter predators.

  12. How do soy curls compare to TVP in texture? I don’t like the sponginess of TVP (or frozen and thawed tofu).

They don't taste like TVP to me. I squeezed out the moisture of the curls and they weren't spongy, the texture was nice. I do not like the textured vegetable protein, either.

I love soy curls. I don’t really enjoy a lot fake processed vegan meats, but I do use soy curls occasionally & they are yummy! They’re 100% natural, non GMO whole dehydrates soy beans. I use them to make meatloaf, chicken salad, shredded bbq sandwiches, etc. They are also awesome in chicken stir fry. Happy to share any recipes. Jill McKeever on youtube has a ton of video recipes too.

Oh thanks! I'll check out Jill McKeever on YouTube. :)

Many predators do not comprehend their actions as unwanted, or they do not have compassion. It is part of the psychological deficit that allows the predatory behavior. Those biopsychosocial deficits will always exist in some people.

I wish we did not try to halt every conversation about the topic by calling out “victim shamingâ€. Yes, trying to analyze a predatory event will almost always seem like we are trying to victim shame. But, the truth is most people are trying to learn and avoid a future event. For example, suppose we study rapes and find that women who wear red pants are 75% more likely to be victims. Can we not let all women know this so that they have the choice to not wear red pants without yelling victim blaming to those women who did wear red pants and get raped in the past? (I have no idea about red pants. I am just making up a scenario.) Furthermore, are we letting the fear of victim blaming halt our ability to objectively study predatory crimes?...SNIPPED for brevity

...Why did my generation tolerate more predation than those now? Why was vulnerability accepted more in the past as the norm? Perhaps we will find that by changing the profile of potential victims, we can cut down the number of available targets. And, what if empowerment adds just enough fear factor to predators that the deviant behavior stops or at least slows? We will never know these things without being able to discuss all aspects freely.

Do you not remember how workplaces were back then? No female managers, women only typing and getting coffee for men, men with offices with closed doors who called their secretaries in for dictation? And what jobs were available freely to women (with rare exceptions). Teacher nurse secretary homemaker housecleaner. So it's not like we could say Oh I'll just switch jobs or careers.

Sorry to sound so angry, but I am. Not only did women have to put up with this behavior back then, even now it's Why Didn't You Do Anything? How about shaming the men who looked the other way?

  15. Also, if they don't complain, the gardein brand veg 'meats' and the 'Almost Meat' brands are very good tasting. Almost Meat burgers are fantastic on the grill.

  16. Thank you! Being the only vegan in the house (dh didn't last but a couple of months) cooking food that looks or tastes like meat would be huge bonus. Last night I made a vegan Mexican meal for me and then a separate rice and taco meat for the guys. Way too many dishes to have to hand wash. :(

Oh that's too hard. For a Mexican meal with a mixed vegan/omnivore family, it can be easier than that. Cook and spice the meat first, chop the veggies while it's cooking. Then you can make the tacos the same way, using refried beans or whatever you like in yours and the meat in theirs, and then the rice and toppings can be the same, you just don't use the cheese and/or sour cream. I lazily just nuke a canned refried beans in the microwave, so just a bowl there. Or you can use the same pan you cooked the meat in, just put the meat in an easy to wash container. I'm not explaining this well Lol. Here's a website you might find helpful. It's vegetarian rather than vegan, but just omit the cheese or skip those recipes. :)

    Ooh, here's one I hadn't seen, has vegan/omnivore recipes http://stuffedveggies.blogspot.com/2013/11/a-month-of-meals-for-omnivore-vegan.html?m=1
