  1. What are the odds that we could do two in a year's time span? The price is great and my son will knock out 2-3 lessons in one sitting… I was considering purchasing both Explorers-1815 and 1815-Present to completely cover US History (plus some) over the next year?

I'm thinking of doing the same thing.  My son finished the first one in 5 months, and that included some breaks for holidays.  He also does multiple lessons on some days and tries to sneak some in on the weekends if I'll let him.   :)   I wonder if the content becomes more demanding as he moves to the next course.  Can anyone speak to that... whether or not each course is harder than the one before it?

  2. I know this is an old thread....I am so sorry if this messes anyone up! But I really really wanted to hear from some who had been using VP self paced. I notice several of you are no longer using it . . . anyone care to share why?

I am considering either using OTAE for my rising 2nd and 4th graders or 1815 to Modern with my 4th grader and OTAE with my 2nd grader.

I would love to know why some of you left VP Self Paced and from those of you it is still working for.

    :) Thank you!

The independent nature of the program really works for us.  My son is very motivated to do the lessons.  He's only done the first one, OTAE, but he really liked it and learned more than I could have taught him.  We'll continue on with the NTGR.  We just ordered it on the half price special.  Here's a link to the sale if anyone needs it:  http://curebit.com/x/ELMV1n

  3. I've found with every phonics/reading program, no matter how well written, kids are going to move at their own pace.  We've come to use whatever parts of the program are enjoyable for us at that time and skip over the rest without feeling guilty about it.  We use PAL right now with all my kids.  We use the one room school house approach, so we do as many things together as we can.  Ds has been reading since age 3, but loves words/letters/sounds and loves helping his sisters learn them.  He also really enjoys the poetry.  The twins know all the sounds and are pretty much reading, but have enjoyed the reinforcement of the farm.  The little ones are learning for the first time, but also prefer Leapfrog for letter sounds.  So, my advice would be to just enjoy the games if that is what works for your son, and fit in the other parts as they seem relevant to his needs.  Don't feel like you have to do every lesson, every work page, every game, every day....  hope that helps!  We do love the PAL program, but also use a lot of other things through the early learning years.

  4. I am considering this but not sure how it would work cycle wise if I put both kids in OTAE. My dd will age out of the self paced before she finishes

Yes, it's so hard to know where to fit them in on history cycles.  At least it is for me!  We just jumped in with ds at age 8.  Even though he was 3rd grade and OTAE is supposed to be for 2nd grade.  We found it just right for him, but it depends on the child.  We will just keep going with it as long as it is still working for us, so I don't know if we'll make it through all 5 with him or not.

Also, I hate that you have only until April ... Why not May???

Originally they had August 2014 for the end date!  That was going to really push us... I'm glad they changed it to April... though you're right, May makes more sense in terms of the school year!
  5. They are now running the special for the YEAR LONG course!  You can get access for an entire year, and it is still half price!!!

They are running a summer special full course special for the Veritas Press online self-paced history programs.  You can get access to one of their 5 programs from now until the end of August April 2015 for half price (which makes it $99)!  This is a great value.  Everything is online and the kids learn so much.  They learn the memory song, do interactive games, and learn about each of the 32 timeline cards.  My son loved the first one, Old Testament and Ancient Egypt.  I just signed him up for the next one, New Testament, Greece and Rome.

If you've been wanting to try it out, you can read more about it here:

And, if you order through this link it will also help my family.  We will get a $10 refund from our purchase price for anyone who decides to order.  We would be very grateful as you know every little bit helps!  Also, if you purchase it you can also refer people and receive a refund!

I think you have to sign up by April 15th and access lasts until August 31  April 2015!  My son just asked the other day if he could do the next one during the summer because he didn't want to wait until fall.  I'm so glad they came up with this special offer!  Hope it helps another family too!

  6. Do you use the reading selections in WWE or use passages from your history, literature, etc.?  My kids tend to get frustrated not getting to hear the whole story since it's always a different selection.  It would be neat to do the WWE concepts with something we are already reading.  BUT... that seems like a lot of work!  When the WWE workbooks is just open and go, I feel like it would be a lot of extra time to use our own readings.  Anyone have experience with this?  I'd love some input!  Thanks!

  7. I've tried HOD and MFW and we go back and forth at times.  To make the HOD LHFHG history a little more exciting for my kids, we got the History for Little Pilgrims Coloring book from CLP to use along with it.  For some reason if they can color something I'm reading about, it make it more exciting to them.  We also draw our own timeline as we went along.  We never got into MFW 1st, the phonics was never at the right place for my kids and the right time.  We do our own phonics program.  We do use the Bible Reader from MFW 1st.  Each child has their own and it is also a special art book they can color the pictures as they are able to read the page.  My kids thrive on crafts, coloring, etc.  I'd say whatever your kids love, try to tie that in and supplement with it where appropriate.  We did love MFW K.  My son was the age 2nd grade and my twins were age Kinder, and they all loved it.  We did rely on the library!.  My son would read books about the topic, he's an avid reader so that's the best way he learns.  I found with HOD that I need to add in my own "book basket" like MFW uses.

  8. There is so much that could be said, and I did read a few responses and they were beautiful!

How do I know that I love God? Because I keep coming back to Him and He comforts the real me. You know, the real me I am when no one is looking at my thoughts or my hearts desires. The real me that is being transformed SLOWLY day by day into the image of His Son.

I am commanded to love the Lord my God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love my neighbor as myself. I’d like to think I want to obey this, but it is not what I always live out perfectly.

Like when I get angry at my kids for interrupting my project, and later realize that in that moment I loved “my kingdom†rather than loving God. Or when I realized I didn’t really WANT to love my neighbor yesterday because he rang the door bell at the wrong time.

Sometimes I’m tempted to despair, because I find myself deep down not wanting to love God at times.

Instead of despairing that I failed again at loving God, I find great hope and comfort in Christ. Because this is the very reason he came to earth: to live the life I could not live – obeying and fulfilling the law of love perfectly, and He died the death I could not die (taking on himself all God’s wrath for my inability to love Him and others, conquering sin and death He rose from the grave) This is why Christ came, for me when I love “my kingdom†instead of His kingdom or I love “my name†instead of His Name.

So instead of despairing, I find great hope and joy that God is that good and I am overwhelmed by His grace.

So, what is more reassuring than my love for God is God’s love for me. When I fail to love Him, He comforts me with His love and reminds me I am kept in Jesus and because of Jesus he sees me as He sees Jesus. So he says of me, “this is my (child) whom I love, with (her) I am well pleased.†I am loved not because of my works but because of His.

Back to the question… I know I love God because the overall trajectory of my life is a growing desire towards God. My love for God is not perfect, but it has grown from the time I first believed until now. I believe He is the one who has caused this love to grow in me and I trust Him to keep it growing until I see Him face to face.

  9. I have a dilemma...

We just started Zoology 1: Flying Creatures about 2 weeks ago, and I was planning to continue this through the fall and until we finished the book which I thought might be around March. I just found out my son will be doing Apologia's Astronomy in our co-op that starts in September. They will be doing a lapbook and craft each week, covering the first 9 chapters and then the class is over at Dec. I really want to be reinforcing the same topics at home and maybe include the Junior Notebooking Journal. However, I know I can't do both science books at the same time. For Zoo 1, we have been doing the Junior Notebooking Journal with the 3 oldest kids (ages 5, 5, and 7). They really enjoy this and we are just taking it slow and enjoying it.

Would it be unreasonable to finish the first few chapters of Flying Creatures, then switch to Astronomy and do the first half... then switch back to Flying Creatures and finish the book from Jan-May... and finally, go back and finish Astronomy after that???

Would we loose something in all that switching? I'm curios to know what others might do, especially someone who has used Apologia elementary books! This is our first time to use them!

  10. About how many books are listed in the book list you can buy for $5 from the HOD site? Are there more books than what you can see listed in their online book store? Basically, is it worth getting, or can I find the same information online? I would love to download a pdf format, but I didn't see that they offer one. Am I right about that? Thanks!
