  1. Ha. Thanks! Pre-professional isn't really the feel she is going for.  We stopped at Rochester on our road trip; I don't think it's the right fit either.

I was going to ETA: Goucher and Earlham.  She didn't have a positive vibe from the visits, but she was not in the greatest of moods when we visited.  She isn't sure whether to add them.

She is such a difficult one to decipher.  I am stuck.  Her scores truly don't reflect who she is.  But it is a fact that she is not a great test taker and that doesn't bode well for a rigorous college atmosphere.

  2. Reviving this thread, as I need thoughts on Juniata, Allegheny, Knox, Kalamazoo and St. Mary's.

Wooster, St John's (attended summer camp and loved it; worried about job prospects), Susquehanna (attended writing camp), Beloit, Lawrence, Muhlenberg, Agnes Scott are on the list - with the addition of Mt Holyoke, her absolute dream school.

I have been to Allegheny and Juniata.  Juniata is much more her style, but both of those schools are truly in the boonies.

  3. My daughter is enjoying having photoshop. She drew many of the cartoons for my letter sound chart for my phonics materials and is currently designing the cover for a beginning phonics book I am working on for the non-profit! :)

    Unrelated, but not.

I think of you often, because your guidance and website helped me with my struggling reader many years ago - my first year homeschooling!

    Thank you again. :)

  4. Oh, I think I have some more ideas.  When you said this it reminded me that dd got started on You Tube tutorials and a free program called Inkscape.  She still uses Inkscape for a lot of her art; she still prefers it to Photoshop. I think there's a second free program she uses; she's in bed now but if you're interested I can ask her tomorrow.

Has your dd found DeviantArt?  Two of my kids have had pages there and have posted their art.  In spite of the kinky sounding name, they are kid friendly and kids' accounts block anything racy.  Dd16's page is mostly My Little Pony fan art.  My older dd posted mostly sculpey miniature clay food she made.

Thank you!  I have just shared your ideas and let her loose.  :)

  5. What about finding something on You Tube?  My teenagers love watching You Tube and not just for junk.  My son is constantly watching learning videos and they are all free!!  Bonus!!

Quick google search brought these up. Maybe something would work for your daughter.

    That is perfect!  Thank you!

I reached out to my older son tonight and asked him.  His response?  "Let her do her own exploring."  Classic him!  By her age, he was running his own website design business.   :)

I will give her your list of the youtube videos, the Lynda course link and maybe canva?  I would love a free program that she can play with.  I'll let her loose with deciding her path.

    Thanks all!

  6. DD17 is a rising senior and never got the chance to take Spanish 3, due to scheduling conflicts.  She tutored over the summer with Ray and scored a 90% on the ps Spanish 3 exam, which allows her to have Spanish listed on her ps transcript.  She was thrilled.  And we were thrilled with the expertise and encouragement that Ray provided.

Just a heads up if anyone is considering Ray's services.

  7. Ursinus is known for its sciences and its athletics.  I think it's a fairly rigorous school, at least for the students who go there.  I have never heard it called intellectual, though.  I would say that the typical student is a bright athlete who is trying to balance school and team (sometimes unsuccessfully).  Ursinus is in the suburb of Collegeville.  There is no walkable town; if you have a car, you can get to typical suburban shopping centers and movie theatres.  The campus is pretty.  Not sure how influential Greek life is.  Merit is good.

That's really all I know!  It has a good reputation, as far as I know.  HTH!

  8. I found the school district.  I have an address.  They have nothing on their site about homeschooling.  At least the search feature turned up nothing and it wasn't under any of the tabs.

I may be reaching out soon.  This is so different than anything we've had to do before.

You're not in Philadelphia or Montgomery or Bucks counties, are you?

  9. I am a homeschool evaluator in PA (you will need one, btw).  Once you find your district, their site should have pdfs of the necessary paperwork.

If not, use this website to print out the affidavit.   Get the affidavit notarized and drop it off, along with your objectives, to the district office.  Be sure to get a receipt from them.

Standardized testing must be done in 3rd, 5th and 8th grades, so plan on that at sometime during the year.

Any other questions, feel free to reach out to me!  And welcome!

ETA:  Oops.  Forgot to include link.

  10. Great, thanks!  We actually already have the Geometry text and I was needing to know for the Algebra courses!

I print the Algebra pages out and put them in a three ring binder, but I have been thinking of buying the spiral bound.  DD always takes the pages out of the binder and they go back in crumpled and it drives me batty!

ETA:  Done.  Ordered through Lulu. :)

  11. First off, it's right by Granville Island, which is also great to visit. If you are planning on doing any of your own cooking, the market at Granville Island is fantastic. Tons of fresh produce and seafood and all kinds of wonderful things to eat. There are little ferries at Granville that will take you across the water - I would recommend that over walking the bridge. I've walked the bridge, it's fine, but the traffic is busy. The little mini ferry (I think they hold about 10 people - very cute) doesn't take long. Then you're downtown Vancouver. Public transportation is pretty reliable in Vancouver, so if you didn't have an hour to walk to Stanley Park then you could look into transport or grab a cab.

Being in Kits or one of the neighbourhoods near there also puts you closer to the Pacific Spirit Regional Park. Great beaches, hiking, etc. http://www.greatervancouverparks.com/PacificSpirit.html

Here's a link for Granville Island: http://granvilleisland.com Lots of neat little artist studios that you can poke into as well.

Thanks Sarah!  Dh likes the area and what you've said about it!  Checking into places now!

  12. When we went to Vancouver a couple of years ago (me, two daughters and a friend of mine), we stayed at the St. Claire Hostel.  It was a really great place if you're not doing a traditional hotel.  I'm an Airbnb host and I would still consider (myself) staying there again.  It's in a great location related to downtown and a lot of the places that are great to visit.  You could get a room for just the two of you.

We walked everywhere -- out to Stanley Park and back, to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (to see "Les Miserables"), to/from the train station, to the Gaswork area, to Granville Island, etc.   You could check to see what is happening at the QE Theatre.  We had a lot of fun attending the play and then going out to dinner. We had the best gelato at Bella Gelateria on Cordova Street.  They've won people's choice (and other) awards in Italy!

    Enjoy your trip!

He wouldn't bite on the hostel thing.  It's a romantic trip for us.
