  1. I am still looking around for curriculum for dd6 (1st grade next fall), mainly for Language arts.

Since a number of people are using Phonics Road. If dd6 is a good reader, reading around end of 2nd grade, beginning 3rd grade level, which level should I start her out on? She is not a good speller at all.

  2. My daughter, now 6 yo, had PPHN because PDA was not shut. The problem was discovered in the hospital right after birth. Her sats her once down below 50%. I think they gave her bronchodilator and surfactant. After 12 days in the hospital, of which 5 days were in Level 3 NICU getting one on one care, 1/4 million dollars later (Well, insurance paid for it), she recovered. The first few years were hard, because she kept getting sick with RSV and asthma when she was sick. Now she doesn't get sick as much any more, but her asthma still lingers when she is sick. Her condition was serious. I hope your child will be well soon.

  3. For WWE, I saw on the website that there are Instructor Text, workbook, student pages for sale. Do I need everything?

For FLL, I saw there are level 1 and level 2, but level 3 and 4 both have instructor guides and student workbooks. So do I only need 1 book each for level 1 and level 2?

  4. We use SOTW and even in FLL there are references to to God here and there, you can see the Christian worldview through out SOTW so I just don't get it some times

I don't know what's wrong with your ES/charter. We use SOTW as our main history spine. SOTW is the school's choice for history. I have seen FLL on my ES's desk used by another family. I am glad you made your decision to leave. Now it's time to move on and find the right co-op/homeschool group for your family.

  5. Bumping for you!

We are still in a charter getting $ for our curriculum. My ES is a pastor's wife and she is amazing. While we talk a lot about God in our conversation, it's a common understanding that we cannot submit anything religious in our sample. We use secular curriculums. I have friends who use Abeka, but submit worksheets printed out from the internet just for school.

  6. Thank you, thank you! I thought my daughter would need to go to the ER last night, but she slept through the night! I gave her garlic oil in the ear and homeopathy (pulsatilla, which is one ingredient in the Hyland Earache tablets). And that was all I had in the house late at night. This morning she felt much better.

All your suggestions are very interesting. I will check into them. I know she is more prone to ear infections. I will be more prepared next time.

  7. Ds9 has been learning piano for 3 years. I want him to pick up a new orchestra instruments. He doesn't know which one to learn. I am also somewhat concerned about the cost of learning a new instrument because a friend of mine has a violin teacher that charges $65 for one 45 minutes session. I am sure I can find someone cheaper, but I am also not sure of the going rate for a music teacher. I am currently teaching him piano to save money. What is a good instrument to learn in hope to participate in an orchestra one day?

  8. My daughter is going to be first grade in the fall. I am thinking of bringing her home to homeschool her. She is currently reading at around early 2nd grade level. I am planning to use WWE and FLL. Does she need OPGTR? I understand that OPGTR is for learning how to read. If she is already reading fluently, then I assume she doesn't need it. What is the next step after OPGTR? Should the next step be a formal spelling program like AAS?

  9. I have a pg ds 9 yo. When he was young, he used to jump all day to let his energy out. He was into everything, causing lots of trouble that I didn't anticipate little boys could do. He required lots of attention. I mean it. He would take every single minute of my life if he could. Then I had my daughter. She was born with a condition that needed lots of attention when she was a baby. I finally sat down with ds when he was 4 to teach him how to read. In 4 months (3 days a week, 1-2 hours a day), I brought his reading level to 2nd grade. Yes, this kind of kids can do it! One day, my husband came home. He wondered where ds was because he didn't hear any thumps in the house. The house was all quiet, because my ds finally got "sucked" into Magic Tree House series. That was the turning point of our lives!

My point is you need to find something to get him into. Once he gets into something (reading, puzzles, legos, army man, etc), you will have some time to tend to other kids. Three is a tough age for pg's. He barely sat down long enough to learn how to read when he was 4.

  10. Our sofa is very old. We had it since we got married. We didn't want to change it because kids are messy. Now it's time to go.

I'd like to have a sofa made of leather, but I don't know how to choose it and what to watch out for. Any ideas?

My neighbor has a microfiber sofa and she said all stains come off her sofa. I still like the idea of leather, but I would like to hear your opinions about microfiber.

    Thanks!

  11. My dd6 is currently in public school. I am thinking of bringing her home next year for first grade. I think I am going to use Explode the Code. Otherwise, I have no idea what I can use in LA and I am open to suggestions. She is reading at around early second grade level. Otherwise, she is pretty at level.

    Thanks!
