I'm just not sure that she really understands minor scales, intervals, chords, inversions, etc. Would Music Ace help with that? Storm Bay Posted February 13, 2009 Share Posted February 13, 2009 (edited) I haven't used Music Ace, but I didn't start theory until I'd had a good 4-5 years of piano and did Rudiments of Theory, a Canadian publication. No bells or whistles, but I did it in a year (I did my Royal Canadian Conservatory of Music Rudiments exam--the last of the rudiments as if you pass that you don't need the earlier ones.) I'm not sure if that book is still in print or not, but you may wish to ask the piano teacher for a suggestion. My piano teacher also taught me the theory, as I recall, at least at the rudimentary level, but I don't remember it being hard, although it took a while to get used to the alto and tenor clefs. For Harmony, etc, I took separate classes. ETA Rudiments are everything you learn before you study things like Harmony, Counterpoint, etc, and shouldn't be confused with beginner piano theory, even though that does have some rudiments in it. Among other things it includes knowing all your major and minor (harmonic & melodic) key signatures, scales, triads, intervals (including augmented & dimished intervals), chords (4 notes), notes, etc, as well as the 4 main clefs still used in music today (treble, bass, tenor & alto, although I think only violists use the alto clef) I don't know what American Level 3 books are as I did the Toronto Conservatory books which are graded differently, I think. I've only taught beginners in the States as I haven't pursued teaching as seriously with my dc around as I used to do in Canada.
