Social Studies and Language Arts for summer

Recommended Posts

I got a call from a potential client asking for how her son can take a 2 classes over the summer so that he won't have to repeat 6th grade at his private school.

I am going to suggest that he attend the private school I work at for his language arts requirement if his school will accept it. What other suggestion could I give them for 6th grade language arts? According to mom he's grade level regarding comprehension but very very weak in writing (mechanics, grammar, etc.). I'm hoping they will select my school as from what mom said I think there are some additional learning issues that he's dealing with.

The other class is Social Studies.  Is there a program that would be good for summer work that is more than supplemental but not too crazy with the amount of work that the family could work through over the summer? She thought about Khan Academy but I don't think that's enough for Social Studies. I suggested that she look at homeschooling programs but I know that's not on her radar.

Workbook programs?

Online programs? they might be open to spending some money but I'm not sure.

Other ideas?

Thank you so much!

Sixth grader struggling... maybe Wordsmith for language arts? It's probably simple enough for them to teach/implement, short enough to get done, easy enough for a struggling student, and schoolish enough to satisfy them. Maybe along with doing a couple of Evan-Moor Daily Language Review or Daily Paragraph Editing to practice basic skills?

For social studies for a struggling kid? I'm not sure. Everything I can think of is too advanced or a really full program that wouldn't fit in the summer or would require being more creative. It sounds like they just want an online option. Maybe Time4Learning has something? That might be another option for the writing as well- Time4Writing.
