New to forum and need some input - afterschooling and acceleration

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am new to this forum and need some input regarding upper elementary afterschooling and acceleration for my DC. Should I pick one or two days of the week and working on it with them afterschool or does is it best to spread afterschooling over several days of the week doing a little bit each time? I will be accelerating math for one of my DC at well, does any of you do this and afterschool as well? If so any tips on how to make this work will be appreciated. Thanks

Edited to make my post brief, since my long post did not result in many responses.

Following.........Wow, I hope to learn from you.

I am new to this forum also. I am a single mom of 12 y/o next month daughter. She is in 6th grade in a public school in Texas. I decided, to accelerate her one math grade in school (faulty thinking on my part) because I though she needed to take Algebra in 7th grade to be able to take Calc AB in 11th and BC in 12. I did not realize that she could just go from preCal to BC. Well anyway, this was before I found this board.

She studied the 8th grade school district text, Prentice Hall  Texas Middle school math book to pass the required credit by exams to accelerate. I did not know that were much better text out there. I do now.

Now, She is now slowly working herself through the Paul Foerster Algebra I text.

I have been wondering  how to add grammar/ English Analysis w/o her revolting.

Vanurseprac, yes it is possible to go straight from precalc to AP BC, since your DD is a year ahead she will probably take Calc BC  in 11th grade and then take more advanced math in 12th if your high school offers it and she wants it.  My DS is not subject accelerated in his school, only at home. It's all driven by him, he is always excited when does math even when he talks about math, you'd think he was talking Minecraft.

I heard MCT is fun, so I think both DC will enjoy doing it. Since they will already be doing a good amount of writing with MCT and they love reading, I am hoping that they can just read the literature and then we can analyze it verbally. This way it won't be too much for them. I will also discuss swapping the ELA work we do at home for school homework with their teachers.

Agreed. I took the equivalent of precalc in 10th grade and AP Calculus BC in high school.  the BC class is supposed to teach 2 semesters of calculus in 2 semesters of HS.  The AB class teaches 1 semester of calculus in 2 semesters of High school.  So the BC class is faster paced and covers more.

please keep us posted. I hope others post on this thread to give you their experience. I am reaching a writing program, but really don't know how to assess her level in this subject. She is making straight As in her ELAR class in school. But I don't does not reassure me much. She also loves to read, however,  that has decreased since she discovered anime.

Wishing you great success!

We afterschooled our youngest who is now a senior in high school. For math at home he worked on Singapore since 2nd grade, did some NEM (Singapore) and then a lot of AoPS and two eIMACS online classes.

Regarding scheduling when he was younger, if his school homework was light (it usually was), he did afterschooling assignments several school nights each week and almost always Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. He also studied during the summers. So, we had a plan but it was flexible. I'm also a firm believer in giving kids down time and a break after school to refresh. We were able to afterschool and have down time and he still gets plenty of sleep. Somehow it seems to have worked for us. The key is finding what works for you and your child.

His high school has accommodated him very well without our asking, so we haven't had to do much the past four years.

Thanks VANURSEPRAC.It's great that your daughter is doing really well in ELA tests in school, it's a shame that is not easy to infer much from that these days. I am hoping the teacher manuals can help me access my boys writing, I know what good writing looks like but the manuals will help me determine what it should look like at their age/level. I also intend to post some of their work to the K-8 writing workshop forum to get some input from others now and again.

Heigh Ho thanks for your post. I hadn't heard of 10 min x grade level. That will be a good way to get their buy in for some extra writing excercises each day, homework is easy for them so they breeze through it even though they complain about having to write 10 sentences a week.  Thanks for tips on what else to read we already have popular mechanics which is really for their dad's magazine but they like reading it and BoysLife from cub scouts. I googled Focus magazine and it looks quite interesting. They are good at reading both fiction and non fiction but do not like writing. I was just browsing Bravewriter's website and intrigued by the idea of partnership writing for this age group.  Summer will also be a good time to get some afterschooling in since we don't do lots of camps, thanks for the tip.

MBM thanks for sharing what worked for you, I think we will have to spread things out like that too so that my DC  get enough down time everyday.

I am familiar with Singapore primary math but not NEM thank for introducing the series to me, I have browsed the singapore website and it looks pretty interesting. I also like the look of AOPS and EIMACS for my math loving DS, I will look into them further. How nice that your high school has accomodated your son without asking, I really pray for this for my DS since it will be difficult for me to support him beyond high school calculus.
