Math Mammoth vs Abeka

We have had our son in Abeka Math since K. He is now currently in 2nd. Last year during first grade, I just didnt love Abeka. I felt like it constantly reviewed things and it was boring for him. We tried switching and went to Rod and Staff at the beginning of this year....I thought it would be a good fit. He was bored. hated the black and white book, did not want to sit and drill addition facts...we went back to Abeka! Now, I feel like hes lacking in math. We tried doing math without the TM for Abeka....maybe that was a mistake on my part. Either way hes struggling with subtraction and I hate Abeka. Its just not a good fit for us. We tried the Math mammoth sample pages and we both like it!! I am fearful though on exactly where to put him in math Mammoth. He can get the answers for the second grade problems. However, I feel like he would almost be missing to much if we didnt go back and complete 1a/b in MM....Opinions? I have 1 and B and was considering doing it quickly. Reviewing what he needs, teaching new concepts if there are any....like word problems. Abeka lacked in that area. Thanks for any advice!

Would your son feel excited to zoom through the first book because it is "easy" or would he feel frusterated because he has to go back to a "baby" level of math?  Whichever keeps both of you excited about math is best.

There are many ways to review the first book by hitting only the word problems, or having him a sampling of problems from the end of a section, if he gets them right - move along; if he gets them wrong - review.  You can also start in the second book, then go back to the first if he is having too much trouble with a more advanced concept.

Best wishes,

We printed some sample pages and he enjoyed them! I talked with him about going back to "review" some things he may have not fully understood with Abeka. He seems okay with it! Today we took the test for 1a up to Chapter 4. He did great but it allowed me to see where he needs help...he definitely needs work with word problems and then understanding breaking numbers like 45 into tens and ones. He did okay with that in Abeka but MM words it a little different so I think he will catch on fast to it. I just do not want to make a switch if its completely different, but I think it will work out okay! I want to find a program while hes still young and NOT switch again. Thanks!

The truth is, he has to learn the basics : Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Decimals. And he has to know them REALLY well. Math mammoth would be a good diversion for one year then go back to Abeka if you'd like.

I agree that he needs to learn the facts. For whatever reason, it just wasnt working for him with Abeka.  I was just scared to switch if it was going to be to hard of an adjustment. I would love to find one program and stick with it! I am hoping to do that while hes young! Which is one reason i am considering it now. hes a young 7 so we have time still! I hate switching back and forth between curriculums but I do believe its very important to find that one that fits his needs while he is young.

My daughter did A Beka's K and 1st grade math, and then we switched to MM 2A at the beginning of this school year.  It's been a pretty good transition, though MM does present some concepts differently, so I have had to explain to her "this is like when you did _____ in math last year."

Did you have him take the placement test for MM?  It can show you where there are areas you need to go back and spend more time on, and which things he's already got a good grasp of.
