briansmama
I'd love some help from other more science-oriented homeschooling parents out there! In an effort to facilitate my 4th grader's interests more I've asked him to help choose topics for science units. He loves sports so I thought a Sports Science unit would be fun. Well. Now that we're about to start I'm left wondering how to tie all of the books, videos, and kits together. I thought I could incorporate Energy and The Law's of Motion into the unit, so I have 2 books on energy and a kit to go with them. I found an ESPN Sports Science tv program and bookmarked the 3-5 minute segments online to watch either on the iPad or stream to the computer. I have ordered kits on the human body so we can do hands-on work learning where all of those muscles and bones fit together and learn about the respiratory and other systems as well. Would you start with a longer overview (video) of the human body? Start with motion? Start with sports science books? I've read kids really enjoy doing the hands-on stuff first but I honestly will be learning right alongside my son so I don't feel I can explain/share knowledge in this area as it comes up (except with regards to digestion and sports nutrition). Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Erica in OR
I'm all for starting with some high interest hands-on activities to kick it off, maybe with one or two of the sports science segments you mention. This Celebrating Chemistry newspaper "Having a Ball with Chemistry" is aimed at 4th-6th graders and has interesting hands-on activities, articles, and puzzles for sports and chemistry. I don't think you need to be nervous about learning alongside. If you don't know something, it's an opportunity for your son or both of you to look it up and learn more about it. Sounds like fun! briansmama
Thank you Erica! Off to check out that resource...I think we will go for the fun stuff first :) After all, that was my primary motivation for skipping the science curriculum this year.
