coincidence? Or could this really be working???

Recommended Posts

My ds11 has Aspergers. He is very very high functioning, so much so that he wasn't diagnosed until this year. But he definitely has communication issues, anger issues, frustration issues, and a hard time focusing. He can be REALLY hard to live with. Well, Sunday my dh (his stepfather) took him to the shooting range for the first time and taught him to shoot. He said he was really good, paid attention well, was the perfect student. But what is really amazing is that for the next 48 hours he was SO MUCH BETTER!!!!!

He was staying calm and centered and miraculously communicating clearly. When I said "I don't know if that is what Ean had in mind..." about dinner choices he calmly said "What did you have in mind Ean?" Previously he would have started whining about how he never gets to choose the restaurant, or gotten angry, or whatever. His calm, normal response shocked both my husband and I! And he kept it up for the next 48 hours, and really has been better even up until today, although it is wearing off.

Was it just having time with his step dad one on one? Or could the focus required for target shooting have really helped him? I'm totally willing to let him have this develop into a hobby if it is going to help him so much.

Any thoughts?

Well, whatever it was, I'm glad he was so pleasant for 48 hours! That is a nice break for you. I do think the individual focus on him may be a factor. I notice my 8 yr. old Aspie getting more out of control when he doesn't get some alone time away from his brother. I would keep it up and see if the pattern continues. What do you have to lose?
