Union University in Jackson, TN?

It was my son's second choice school, BUT we never visited it since his first choice came through with enough $$ to attend there. The main reason it was his second choice is because they didn't have his desired major of Community/Economic Development. They also got lower scores on the Business MFT than his first choice school did (his double major).

Everything else about the school we/he really liked and I would definitely consider it for either of my other boys if they wanted to go there.

Edited to add that we didn't visit it mainly because it was a late addition to schools he wanted to consider. We missed it on our swing through visiting colleges his junior year. We were about to depart for a scholarship competition there his senior year when his first choice school came through with a great economic package - thus sealing his future.

Covenant would be on our "list" I think, if it were a bit closer to us.

But Union is just at an hour and 15 minutes from our house.

And we have toured the campus, being that it was so close.

But just wondering what you guys noticed while on campus. If our experience was strange, or normal.

Or was my experience "clouded" because I GRADUATED FROM UNION'S RIVAL ACROSS JACKSON...LAMBUTH UNIVERSITY and I can't BELIEVE that we are even LOOKING there.

But Lambuth is not the same school it was 20 years ago. Sigh......

I can't help with the feel on campus since we didn't get to visit it... My son only decided to apply there late in the fall of his senior year... and mainly because I told him he NEEDED other options in case school #1 didn't work out financially.

I can sympathize with the rival feeling. One person mentioned UVA to my son as a possibility for his college future and I flat out told him, "NO!" Now, if he REALLY wanted to go there I'd get over it just as I've come to accept another college as the right choice for my oldest, but that first reaction with a rival school. That's hard to overcome!

We visited Union a year ago (last minute decision while on our way to a Covenant visit). Our impressions were very good. We found the staff, faculty, and students to be very friendly and helpful. The head of the honors department sat down with us over coffee for about 45 minutes --we were impressed by his vision and direction for the program. My dd left with a sense that Union would be a very good fit for her. She was invited to come for the scholarship competition, but since she was unable to make the trip, they allowed her to interview over the phone.

Physically, the campus seemed pleasant but, probably due to the damage from the tornado, not particularly beautiful. Still, the overall feeling was good.

After all was said and done, Union was dd's second choice. The decision to attend Baylor boiled down to distance from home (200 vs 800+ miles) and the scholarship package (she won an additional scholarship from Baylor which made that cost less).

Good luck with your search! Yvonne

We were there for a football game and dropped by to see the campus (we are planning to attend a open house soon) and connect with several students we know that attend there. We did not talk to anyone on staff.

I can not tell you really anything about the school, but DS was distraught over how plain the campus was. I grew up in TX, so flat and plain was nothing new to me. But we had just been to Sewanee a few weeks before......hard to even compare strictly on an aesthetic level :)

He felt like he just could NOT go to Union based on the outside campus! So, Covenant is looking better than ever now!

Anyway ~ nothing really to tell you about Union. Just our short experience there yesterday :) and wondering if campus beauty should really be one of the criteria for choosing a campus (?)

That a very powerful tornado came through the Union campus about 3 or 4 years ago. The students that are seniors now, were freshmen then. Because of that, all of the trees are very small still.

But even DS said some of the same comments about Union. While TN Tech is a much bigger campus than Union, it had a more close knit, home-like feel due to the trees...(of all things...)

None of my kids who have visited Union have liked the lay-out of the campus.(Except youngest dd who is 7!!!)

We toured UT Martin on Saturday and both DS(senior) and DD(sophomore) LOVED this campus. Loved the kids, loved the dorms(which are BIGGER than Unions, by the way) and loved the scholars/honors program.

Hmmmm......The decision may be done!;)

Thanks for all your comments about Union. But DS really like UT MARTIN. Even wants me to fill out the housing form, because he wants to get the "good" apartment style dorms.

Think our college search may be about done.

We are much at peace around here.

Blessings,

Wonderful nursing program and also education program. I used to go to church with the head of the Engineering department. Just over the past few years, UU has done some things to make their eng. program be VERY competitive with some of the top eng. programs in the country.

There is a very homey feel to UU. It's a beautiful campus.

Over the past couple of decades, UU goal has been to continue to be a very Christ centered university, but also be academically competitive.

Honestly, every professor I know from UU (and I know a good many) is a very strong christian *and* well known for being a great professor. Over the years, I've gotten to know a number of UU students through our church. I've heard a lot about the school and the professors through these students. Rarely have I heard anything negative. Rarely.

Probably not... but both Va Tech and Covenant are really pretty and/or have gorgeous views so at this point I can say the aesthetics are a nice plus and we enjoy visiting.

I'm going to have to adjust "my" thinking as we search for middle son. Pretty much all his choices are located IN cities due to needing a medical center nearby. I don't think any of them will win "most beautiful campus" awards.
