mary.margaret
I am interested in a Math Activities book that would provide ideas for using manipulatives in Kindergarten. I don't want something programmed like Saxon K... just a book of activity ideas. Is there such a thing out there that is worth using? Thanks, Mary-Margaret Edited January 12, 2009 by mary.margaret
Guest Alte Veste Academy
Here are some I like. More Than Counting http://www.amazon.com/More-Than-Counting-Whole-Math-Kindergarten/dp/1884834035/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231732996&sr=8-1 Family Math for Young Children http://www.amazon.com/Family-Math-Young-Children-Comparing/dp/0912511273/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231733078&sr=1-2 Kristina
mary.margaret
Thanks Kristina, Have you used either one? Oops, I see that you said you liked them both. Which would you recommend over the other? Mary-Margaret
Guest Alte Veste Academy
I have used both and I like aspects of each. I like the presentation of Family Math a bit better, as it seems more orderly. More Than Counting has many more activities so it might seem to be a better value. To me, however, that's countered by the fact that there are more activities that I wouldn't actually do, like ones that suggest manipulative objects that I don't have on hand (42 tiny squirrels for one activity). It also has book suggestions for different concepts. Really, they're pretty similar in content. If you twist my arm, I would tell you I prefer Family Math because I like virtually every activity. Also, I absolutely prefer the clean presentation. Kristina
SonshineLearner
If you like living math type books, you might enjoy reading Greg Tang's books and the Cindy Neuschwander's books including the Sir Cumference series. They are great books that you can get at the library. And I love the abacus that we got from NurtureMinds.com Not quite workbooks...but math fun:-) Carrie:-)
Sara in WA
Check out Peggy Kaye's Games for Math. It has great games for K-3 or so. This book is one of my favorites.
