Hello,

New to the forum. Just wanted to introduce myself.

As a teen I was overly influenced by TV, pop culture, and dismissed the academic opportunities I had in high school. Luckily, I was able to get on track in my 20s, obtain my Master's in Nursing, and have been working as a health care provider for 5 years. I always struggled with reading habitually, and consistently pushed that want for myself to the back of my mind.

2 years ago I was blessed with the greatest moment of my life, the birth of my daughter. In the ever-evolving world, I was troubled when considering her entering a school environment with new technology, and the pervasive influence of advertising, news media, and propaganda. Processing this dilemma led me to discover the concept of classical education. Consuming countless videos online, I was inspired, if I could just give my daughter an education on how to think (as opposed to what to think), than I have done my duty as a father.

My general philosophy of parenthood is that if you want something for your child, first consider how that want applies to yourself. I realized that in order to move closer to my goal of giving my daughter a classical education, I would first need to educate myself.

I discovered "How to Read a Book" by Alder, another life changing moment for me, diagnosing and treating many maladaptive behaviors I developed due to a lack of instruction from a young age. From there, I began to explore the Western Canon, a crash coarse in developing this new habit for myself. After getting through the Iliad, and moving on to the Greek Dramas, I began to stagnate. Feeling dejected, I sought out a new approach, and to my delight, found The Well Educated Mind.

The approach and presentation of the reading lists has resonated strongly with me. I began in earnest at the start of the new year. I'm now halfway through Gulliver's Travels. My hope is this message board my serve as an opportunity to engage in Rhetoric as I move through the reading lists in The Well Educated Mind.

Happy Reading,

JT
