fshinkevich
Hello, I purchased a used set of Math in Focus Grade 1. It includes TM A & TM B also student workbooks A & B. Do I also need to hunt down the student textbooks, or will I be able to teach the program with just the teacher manuals and workbooks? Thanks so much! ondreeuh
It will be worth it to get the student textbooks. You can find them used on Amazon :). However, at first grade it is probably do-able to teach from the TG. Your child can look at the student pages within the TG, although the extra sidebars might be distracting. I love the photos of manipulatives and the kids with little "thought bubbles" that describe their processes. Copy what they do in the book using actual manipulatives, and draw on a whiteboard or paper if you need to. The way MIF is set up, you introduce a concept, practice it, introduce another, practice that, etc. and then the workbook pages review everything. I have taught 1A-5A and have never used the TG though - the textbook is definitely clear enough to teach from directly. We sit together to read through the lesson. I copy problems from the book on the white board and he tells me how to solve them, and then I set up problems for him to solve. Only then does he start on the worksheets. MIF is a fantastic program! I couldn't be more pleased. The one tip I have is to use Math Minutes for mixed practice - we call it "review and preview." If you do 3 Math Minutes a week you will finish in a school year. MIF has periodic cumulative reviews, but I credit the Math Minutes for keeping skills fresh.
fshinkevich
Thank you so much for not only answering my question but giving a review and some tips. I went ahead and ordered the textbooks and Math Minutes from Amazon.
