Can someone help me understand all the different editions of Landmark History of the American People?

I was trying to find this used and have come up with so many different versions. Can someone help me know which to pick?

There's the new full color, two volume set, which is certainly more pleasing to the eye, but much more expensive. I haven't found it used at all.

In older editions, I found:

Plymouth to the Moon Sonlight Edition 198 pgs ISBN: 1887840028 (blue cover)

Plymouth to the Moon 412 pgs ISBN: 0394891201 (also blue cover)

What in the world with the huge difference in pages???

Then:

Plymouth to Appomattox Vol.1 221 pgs ISBN: 039489118X  (white cover)

Appomattox to the Moon Vol. 2 194 pgs ISBN: 0394891198 (red cover)

Thanks so much for any insight to help me make a decision! :)

I think I just figured out the huge discrepancies in the two with blue covers.  The one with over 400 pgs is actually the white Vol 1 and the red Vol 2 in a blue case. Kind of makes sense.

Why does the Sonlight edition have less than half of the pages of the original? We really don't have the time to read over 400 pages, so if it gets it done in less 200, I'm all for that.

The newest edition has been reworded to make it easier for younger students to understand, though my then 3rd grade had no problem when we used the old version.

You can get it as one large book or two smaller books in the blue box. I own one and borrowed the other. They were exactly the same.

We didn't have any trouble reading a chapter per day. Sonlight uses it for two years if you use Core D and E separately or one year if using Core D+E. In the separate cores, you read one or two chapters each week. In the combined cores, you read 3-4 chapters per week.

I haven't seen the newest version, but as I said, we liked the old version and didn't find it necessary to have a simplified version.

The new color version is much more pleasing to the eye, but at $25 each for the two volumes, that's a lot.

I'm still not sure why the Sonlight is half the size of the regular editions, but I found one used, in very good condition, for $4.41 with shipping, so I snatched it up. ;)

We really don't have the time for 400 pages anyway, I suppose. I'll do good to get these guys thru 200.

Thanks so much!

Sonlight took the one Landmark book and separated it into 2 volumes. One volume is used in Core D and the second vol. in Core E. There were some errors in the original that were corrected, more maps were added, and it's full color. The writing was edited somewhat and I find it flows much better. Sonlight worked with the author's family in redoing the newest edition. I really hand it to SL, specifically John Holzmann, to spend the time it took to make it more appropriate for younger ages. It's delightful to read and gives information you just won't find in regular history books.

I still have my old copy but am glad I purchased the newer volumes to use with cores D and E. Much more visually appealing also.
