Reading narrations?

I'm doing it, consistently, with my 3rd grader for the first time. She's reading "A Little Princess" right now (advanced reader so it's not difficult for her). I have her read a chapter a day (again not a problem for HER, but not necessarily something that would work for every child), and then I have her do a narration immediately afterwards. I found that it's too overwhelming for her to do a narration on more than one chapter, maybe two--she gets bogged down in the details.ETA for her it's just a chronological summary of what happened. During the narration we might discuss some character stuff but mostly it's just helping her figure out what's important and what's not.
