But first, I think you need a second medical opinion on the ankle. Just my two cents. :) Also, I wouldn't trust the dude at the gym if he's telling you to stretch before working out. After, yes. Before, no. Static stretching increases the risk of joint injury. Feel free to take that with a grain of salt, as I'm not the one with the fancy sports degree, but I might do a little research on that front if I were you.
