SFM
My children are 8, 4, 2 and I am looking into Hebrew, any suggestions? :bigear:
Ewe Mama
I noticed some things on currclick the other day that looked interesting. They were written by someone looking at Judaism through a Christian standpoint, so I don't know if that would work for you or not. I knw the Learnables has a good Hebrew program, too. Keep us posted on what you decide.
SFM
I should have been WAY more specific, eh? Well, I am looking for a Hebrew language curriculum, we are Christians who do celebrate some Jewish holidays etc. and I think it would be beneficial for my children to learn Hebrew. So, it being from a Christian or Messianic standpoint is GREAT for me and really ideal. Thanks for the advice, I will check it out.
Ewe Mama
The programs made by Wholesome Learning on Currclick might be a good fit for you then. Definitely Messianic. Some of them are about learning the Hebrew prayers and their meanings, so there's a strong cultural element to her programs, as well. I think they go on sale fairly frequently, so you can get a good deal. I have downloaded a couple of the early programs, but we haven't yet used them, so I can't tell you any more than that. Hopefully we will get to them soon!

daybreaking
I am also a Christian who is teaching my children Hebrew. I recently ordered this book from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0874417287/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00 and it's been the best of all I've found for teaching the letters and vowels. I have also used and been pleased with books from www.behrmanhouse.com, although they are not from a Messianic viewpoint.
Jay3fer
As a Jew and someone studying Hebrew with her kids (we're moving to Israel next year!), I would recommend NOT taking Hebrew lessons with someone at church or learning any pronunciations from "messianic" websites, youtube, etc. From what I can tell, the pronunciations are universally terrible; I mean, laughably so. The Hebrew you learn that way may be understandable to other English-speaking Christians, but it is nothing like either the ancient or modern language as it's spoken and read by Jews and Israelis worldwide. Here are two books that look decent for introducing kids to Hebrew reading: http://behrman.powerwebbook.com/productdetails.cfm?PC=6231 (bought this one for my son, but haven't started it yet) And this one, Journeys Through the Alef-Bet, another pre-primer, has a free printable "sample" that seems well-suited to English-speaking/reading kids: http://www.torahaura.com/samples/34550.pdf (if you like it, presumably, you could buy the book to get the rest of the lessons). Both assume some Hebrew reading on the part of the adult. If you have none, just stay a few lessons ahead with a website like this one: http://hebrew4christians.com/ (they also have some worksheets you can share with your kids) If your goal is fluency, we also use Rosetta Stone Hebrew, which is actually very good (my full review). When you're ready for copywork, or other Jewish printables, I also have a ton of resources at my own blog: http://ronypony.blogspot.ca/2010/10/miscellaneous-hebrewenglish-copywork.html as well as a few resources (including a Hebrew alphabet lapbook) for sale on CurrClick. Good luck!
Mommy to monkeys
My oldest two are 8 and 9. We've been through Shalom Alef Bet, and hopefully will finish Shalom Uvrachah this year. (Behrman house publishing) I've seen a dozen or so other things, but these are my favorite. They do assume that the adult teaching has a very basic understanding of Hebrew. My FAVORITE resource for this is Aleph Isn't Tough. http://www.amazon.com/Aleph-Isnt-Tough-Introduction-Hebrew/dp/0807407267/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350510067&sr=8-1&keywords=aleph+isn%27t+tough It's inexpensive, VERY user friendly, and you'd have no trouble going through a Hebrew primer with your kids after this. Next year I hope to start Behrman House's program called "Hineni" which is prayer focused. If you want to focus on the "nuts and bolts" of grammar, I hear the First Hebrew Primer put out by EKS Publishing is very good, but I wouldn't start it with a child younger than 11 or so. http://www.ekspublishing.com/biblical-hebrew Edited October 17, 2012 by Mommy to monkeys
