wendybern
Attempting to read Red Badge of Courage along with a Progeny Press study guide with my 9th grader. It is WAY over her head -- the question depth, the vocab, everything. I think we need something more middle-school in difficulty, at least to start with. We're studying the Civil War. Suggestions for a novel and a study guide please? A more gentle introduction to literary analysis and critical thinking?
Candid
I disliked The Red Badge when I read it, so your daughter has my sympathy. The obvious chick novel is Gone with the Wind, but that's not considered as highly. Another good novel is Across Five Aprils.
wendybern
Across Five Aprils is one I was just looking at! Looks good to me, but she read the first 5 pages and pronounced it "totally confusing" and has stomped off. :001_smile: So maybe it's not all about the books.
