Rivka
I feel like there's a disconnect in the reading level between a book like Mr. Popper's Penguins and The Wind in the Willows, which is a surprisingly difficult book to read for many. I agree. Wind in the Willows is complex to decode, and also it has a style and themes that I think my own child would need to be older to appreciate. I have it scheduled for fifth grade, and my child is also an advanced reader. Here are the books I'm assigning in second grade. The "RL" number is reading level (difficulty), and the "GL" number is grade level (interest). Some more good ones at a 3rd grade reading level: Toys Go Out - Emily Jenkins King Max - Dick King-Smith The Bears on Hemlock Mountain The Courage of Sarah Noble The Mouse and the Motorcycle Gooney Bird Greene The Boxcar Children
