Chloe
If I'm going to do this orally with my dc, I only need the TM, correct?
HomeScholar
You could do it with just the teacher's manual. My DS uses the student book for the vocabulary, but we do all the questions verbally. You could easily copy the vocabulary words if you plan to use them. All of the tests are in the teacher's manual. We didn't buy LL version of LOTR so the page numbers don't match our copy but it's not hard to find referenced sections.
Lori D.
You can do this ONLY if you buy a used copy of the ORIGINAL (first) edition. The newer (second) edition (which has been out for about 2 years) is set up differently, requiring you to get BOTH student AND teacher books. The original (first) edition TM is identical to the student book, but just with the answers inserted in the blanks, plus the appendices, writing assignment ideas, and teaching resources. The newer (second) edition TM is JUST answers (to the vocab, comprehension, and discussion questons), the writing assignments, and the appendices and teaching resources. All of the actual teaching information, wonderful chapter notes, vocab worksheets and comprehension/discussion questions are in the student book. Edited February 11, 2012 by Lori D. HomeScholar
I have the second edition TM and SB. I forgot about the additional notes in the SB. You wouldn't have those in the TM. You could use the discussion questions and vocabulary with just the TM but you wouldn't get all the extras. My DS loves the course. We don't do all the extras (like the essays) as we already have a full Lit program, but the discussion questions alone are worth the TM. :)
